Plastics, Polymers and Resins, Polypropylene (PP), Polystyrene (PS), Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polyester, PA, Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), Polyurethanes (PU), Polycarbonate (PC), Polyethylene (PE)Projects

Plastics have revolutionized our lives, creeping into every nook and corner of our homes and offices. However, India’s per capita consumption of plastics is still 6 kg compared to 25 kg in developed countries. Consumer plastics mainly comprise polymers such as polypropylene, high and low density polyethylene, and vinyl chloride. Broadly plastics can be classified into two types namely Thermosetting and Thermoplastic. The type of plastics includes HDPE, LDPE, PVC, PP, PS, PETE and vinyl plastics, to name a few.

The plastics industry is highly fragmented. There are about 22,000 plastic processing units, of which three-fourth are in the small –scale sector, which also accounts for a quarter of the total polymer consumption. About 30 per cent of the total polymer consumption accounts for recycled plastic. Plastics have a high volume –to-weight ratio, which makes their collection and transport a major cost factor.

The Indian plastics industry has been growing at a phenomenal rate of 15 per cent over the years. Thus its potential is being utilized properly. The boost in the plastics industry is due to the rapid growth of segments like electronics, packaging, healthcare, consumer durables and telecommunication sectors.Annually around six million tonnes of plastic is produced in the country, with the plastic packaging sector growing fastest.

Reliance Industries Ltd., Gas Authority of India and petrochemicals are major producers of polymers in India. RIL, Asia’s largest manufacturer of polypropylene with a combined capacity of over one million tonnes, holds 70 per cent market share.

India will be the third largest plastics consumer after the US and China by 2010 at over 12 million.Plastic goods consumption is expected to double in the next three years.  Experts have predicted that India’s market for finished plastic goods will reach $300 billion by 2012, while exports are expected to reach a level of $200 billion in the same period. India ranks highest in recycling of plastics with 60 per cent of plastic recycled compared with a world average of 20 per cent. Experts have estimated thatthe basic demand for plastic would be boosted over the next years by the housing, automobile and retail sectors.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane (PUR and PU) is a polymer composed of organic units joined by carbamate (urethane) links. While most polyurethanes are thermosetting polymers that do not melt when heated, thermoplastic polyurethanes are also available. Polyurethane polymers are traditionally and most commonly formed by reacting a di- or tri poly-isocyanate with a polyol. Since polyurethanes contain two types of monomers, which polymerise one after the other, they are classed as alternating copolymers. Both the isocyanates and polyols used to make polyurethanes contain, on average, two or more functional groups per molecule. Polyurethanes are versatile, modern and safe. They are used in a wide variety of applications to create all manner of consumer and industrial products that play a crucial role in making our lives more convenient, comfortable and environmentally friendly. Polyurethanes are formed by reacting a polyol (an alcohol with more than two reactive hydroxyl groups per molecule) with a diisocyanate or a polymeric isocyanate in the presence of suitable catalysts and additives. The uses of polyurethane ranges from flexible foam in upholstered furniture, rigid foam for insulation in walls and roofs, TPU used in medical devices and footwear, to coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers used on floors and automotive interiors. The base year considered for the study is 2015, and the forecast has been provided for the period between 2016 and 2021. The future of the global MDI based polyurethane market is positive with opportunities in building and construction, appliance, transportation, furniture and bedding, footwear, packaging, and general & industrial engineering industries. The major driver for growth in this market is increasing demand for higher thermal insulating materials in building and construction, home appliances, and transportation sectors. The polyurethane (PU) market size was USD 53.94 billion in 2015 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7% from 2016 to 2025. High demand for lightweight & durable materials from end-use industries such as furniture, construction, electronics & appliances, automotive, footwear & packaging has driven growth in recent years.

Recovery of Nylon from Nylon Waste

Nylon is one of the most common plastics in the world and has been used to create everything from clothes and parachutes to food packaging and guitar strings. Nylon can also be used in conjunction with other materials, such as glass and carbon fibre, as its wide range of qualities are often beneficial, but sadly lacking from the materials that it teams up with. The global nylon market has been estimated to register a significant growth on account of increasing demand of light weight fuel efficient vehicles. The primary factors driving growth of the market are the rising use of the light weight vehicles, growing demand for light weight, heat resistant and durable material in numerous industrial applications, and ever increasing demand of the product from textile industry. The global automotive market is estimated to grow at higher CAGR to mark over USD 90 billion revenue in 2018. The production and use of light weight cars and other automotive, as projected by Morgan Stanley analysts, is set to rise to 2.9 percent of 99 million new vehicles in 2020 and to 9.4 percent of 102 million new vehicles in 2025, from 1.1 percent of 86.5 million this year. This is anticipated to fuel demand of the nylon in manufacturing light yet durable parts. Additionally, there is growing demand for the demand for organic which is expected to rise globally due to the rising prices of petrochemical-based raw. Bio-based polyamides are a high-quality alternative to substitute petro-based. They can be used in automotive, electronics, and sports applications. As a result, it has been projected that in future the demand of nylon may surge manifolds. Moreover, surging demand for and use of consumer goods and electronic devices is expected to further boost growth of the market.

Superplasticizer

Superplasticizers, also known as high range water reducers, are chemical admixtures used where well-dispersed particle suspension is required. These polymers are used as dispersants to avoid particle segregation (gravel, coarse and fine sands), and to improve the flow characteristics (theology) of suspensions such as in concrete applications. Their addition to concrete or mortar allows the reduction of the water to cement ratio without negatively affecting the workability of the mixture, and enables the production of self-consolidating concrete and high performance concrete. Another benefit of superplasticizers is concrete early strength enhancement (50 to 75%). The initial setting time may be accelerated up to an hour earlier or retarded to be an hour later according to its chemical reaction. The use of superplasticizers does not significantly affect surface tension of water and does not entrain a significant amount of air. The main disadvantage of superplasticizer usage is loss of workability as a result of rapid slump loss and incompatibility of cement and superplasticizers. The global superplasticizer market is expected to register a moderate CAGR during the forecast period (2018-2023). Superplasticizer is a chemical admixture used where well-dispersed particle suspension is required. These polymers are used as a type of dispersants to improve the flow characteristics of suspensions and avoid particle segregation in concrete applications. Asia-Pacific is expected to have the highest CAGR followed by Middle-East & Africa during the forecast period, while North America accounted the largest share of the market in 2017. Superplasticizer market is the widening application scope of concrete superplasticizers. Furthermore, the ongoing research and development projects to enhance the efficiency of the construction industry is expected to bode well for the growth of the global concrete superplasticizer market. Owing to factors such as mounting population and the need for efficient infrastructure to accommodate the rising population, the construction industry has received a shot in the arm. As a result of this, the demand for concrete superplasticizers is anticipated to intensify over the consecutive years.
