Plastics, Polymers and Resins, Polypropylene (PP), Polystyrene (PS), Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polyester, PA, Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), Polyurethanes (PU), Polycarbonate (PC), Polyethylene (PE)Projects

Plastics have revolutionized our lives, creeping into every nook and corner of our homes and offices. However, India’s per capita consumption of plastics is still 6 kg compared to 25 kg in developed countries. Consumer plastics mainly comprise polymers such as polypropylene, high and low density polyethylene, and vinyl chloride. Broadly plastics can be classified into two types namely Thermosetting and Thermoplastic. The type of plastics includes HDPE, LDPE, PVC, PP, PS, PETE and vinyl plastics, to name a few.

The plastics industry is highly fragmented. There are about 22,000 plastic processing units, of which three-fourth are in the small –scale sector, which also accounts for a quarter of the total polymer consumption. About 30 per cent of the total polymer consumption accounts for recycled plastic. Plastics have a high volume –to-weight ratio, which makes their collection and transport a major cost factor.

The Indian plastics industry has been growing at a phenomenal rate of 15 per cent over the years. Thus its potential is being utilized properly. The boost in the plastics industry is due to the rapid growth of segments like electronics, packaging, healthcare, consumer durables and telecommunication sectors.Annually around six million tonnes of plastic is produced in the country, with the plastic packaging sector growing fastest.

Reliance Industries Ltd., Gas Authority of India and petrochemicals are major producers of polymers in India. RIL, Asia’s largest manufacturer of polypropylene with a combined capacity of over one million tonnes, holds 70 per cent market share.

India will be the third largest plastics consumer after the US and China by 2010 at over 12 million.Plastic goods consumption is expected to double in the next three years.  Experts have predicted that India’s market for finished plastic goods will reach $300 billion by 2012, while exports are expected to reach a level of $200 billion in the same period. India ranks highest in recycling of plastics with 60 per cent of plastic recycled compared with a world average of 20 per cent. Experts have estimated thatthe basic demand for plastic would be boosted over the next years by the housing, automobile and retail sectors.

Pet Bottle / Containers from Pet Resin - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities

Polyethylene terephthalate (sometimes written poly(ethylene terephthalate), commonly abbreviated PET, PETE, or the obsolete PETP or PET-P), is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in synthetic fibers; beverage, food and other liquid containers; thermoforming applications; and engineering resins often in combination with glass fiber. It is one of the most important raw materials used in man-made fibers. Depending on its processing and thermal history, it may exist both as an amorphous (transparent) and as a semi-crystalline (opaque and white) material. Its monomer can be synthesized by the esterification reaction between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol with water as a byproduct, or the transesterification reaction between ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate with methanol as a byproduct. Polymerization is through a polycondensation reaction of the monomers (done immediately after esterification/transesterification) with ethylene glycol as the byproduct (the ethylene glycol is recycled in production). The majority of the world's PET production is for synthetic fibers (in excess of 60%) with bottle production accounting for around 30% of global demand. In discussing textile applications, PET is generally referred to as simply "polyester" while "PET" is used most often to refer to packaging applications. PET can be semi-rigid to rigid, depending on its thickness, and is very lightweight. It makes a good gas and fair moisture barrier, as well as a good barrier to alcohol (requires additional "Barrier" treatment) and solvents. It is strong and impact-resistant. It is naturally colorless with high transparency. PET bottles are excellent barrier materials and are widely used for soft drinks. For certain specialty bottles, PET sandwiches an additional polyvinyl alcohol to further reduce its oxygen permeability. There are two basic moulding methods for PET bottles, one-step and two-step. In two-step moulding, two separate machines are used. The first machine injection moulds the preform. The preform looks like a test tube. The bottle-cap threads are already moulded into place, and the body of the tube is significantly thicker, as it will be inflated into its final shape in the second step using stretch blow molding. In the second process, the preforms are heated rapidly and then inflated against a two-part mould to form them into the final shape of the bottle. Preforms (uninflated bottles) are now also used as containers for candy. In one-step machines, the entire process from raw material to finished container is conducted within one machine, making it especially suitable for moulding non-standard shapes (custom molding), including jars, flat oval, flask shapes etc. Its greatest merit is the reduction in space, product handling and energy, and far higher visual quality than can be achieved by the two-step system. All over the world, the big soft drink suppliers are diversifying their portfolios to include niche and prospective growth products, like fruit-juice-based beverages, reinvigorating their ranges with national and regional brands, and seeking out and using market-friendly packaging options. Over the last two years in India, Coca-Cola has for the first time been marketing the established maaza fruit-juice-based beverage brand in PET containers. Of the soft drinks market in India, 70% is covered by returnable glass bottles, while about 25% comes in PET, and approximately 5% of still beverages are carton packaged. The aluminium can is a negligible quantity, at just under 1%, simply by reason of cost; while Indians can buy a normal lunch for 15 rupees, they have to pay 30 rupees for a can of soft drink. Since PET packaging has been riding a continuous wave of popularity.

PET PREFORM FROM PET RESIN - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

PET (also named PETE) is a kind of polyester material for fiber, injection molded parts, as well as blow-molded bottles and jars. Special grades are offered with the required properties for the different applications. PET is linear thermoplastic (long-chain molecule consists of repeating units shown as figure right), white but bluish resin made from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol through poly-condensation. PET is supplied by the resin manufacturers in the form of small pellets, each about 0.05 gram. PET came into prominence in the 1950s as a textile material. Its strength, temperature tolerance and wear-resistance made it an ideal replacement for, or addition to natural fibers such as silk, cotton and wool. It has good antiosmosis, low water absorbability and good toughness. PET film's tensile strength is similar with aluminum film's, and is three times that of PC and PA film. PET film is transparent. It's tensile strength can reach 1/3~1/2 of steel's if dealed by oriented draw. It's the toughest thermoplastic film. It will be burnt with yellow flame and will burst when burning. And it will continue burning when away from fire. The term resin originally referred to natural products (particularly of vegetable origin) but now include the man-made substances. The use of plastic product is increasing and will almost certainly continue to increase. Now-a-days pet containers are becoming very popular in the society. The size of the container produced range from 50 ml to 150 ml or more which is further use for making required size blow moulded bottle. Pet perform has large demand for the manufacturing of pet bottles which is used in food & pharmaceutical industries. In India pet-bottle industry started during mid-1980s. Pearl polymer was the first to set up a plant with an initial capacity of 4 mn bottles a year. The bottles were first used for packaging edible oils. Coca-cola and Pepsi-cola the packaged drinking water manufacturers have completely shifted to pet bottle. The application of Pet bottles in ketchup, whisky and juice packaging is increasing day by day. In the initial years, pet resin was made available by the existing polyester fibre plants. Century Enka at its Pune plant started manufacturing, resin in 1984 with a capacity of 1200 tpa. Pearl pet supplies to companies like McDowells, ITC Agro, Nestle, Cadbury etc. It has well dispersed plants spread out in the Country-Delhi and Gurgaon in North India, Mahad (near Mumbai) in the West and Jigani (near Bangalore) in the South. In coming years the demand of pet preform from pet resin will be increasing, so there will be wide scope for new entrepreneurs to venture into this project.
