Rubber is a versatile product with multiple usages. It is grown in various countries worldwide and plays a crucial role in the Indian economy too. India is one of the leading rubber producers in the world.

The use of rubber is widespread, ranging from household to industrial products, entering the production stream at the intermediate stage or as final products. Tyre and tubes are the largest consumers of rubber. The remaining 44% is taken up by the general rubber goods sector, which includes all products, except tyres and tubes. Synthetic rubber is mainly used for the production of auto tyres and tubes, cycle tyres and tubes and footwear. Other applications for the synthetic variety are camel back, belts and hoses. The market segmentation includes Auto tyres and tubes   56%, Bicycle tyres and tubes    9%, Footwear    18%, Latex goods    8%, Belts and hoses    4%, Camelback   5%.

India, being the fourth largest producer of natural rubber in world, is considered to be one of the key players in the global rubber business. The entire requirement of rubber-based industries for natural rubber, synthetic rubber, rayon and nylon tyre cord, steel cord, carbon black and rubber chemicals, etc is being met from indigenous sources. Rapid progress has also been made in the production of natural rubber.

There are about 5000 units comprising 30 large-scale, 300 medium scale and around 4600 small-scale and tiny sector units. These units manufacture more than 35,000 rubber products.

The main producer of synthetic rubber in India has been Synthetics and Chemicals, Apar Industries, Apcotex Lattices and Unimers India. Synthetics and Chemicals had closed down.

The future for natural rubber looks bright. Ever increasing volumes are being produced. At 5.92 million tonnes per annum, natural rubber has 39 per cent of the world rubber consumption of 15.14 million tonne per annum. The rubber industry is expected to grow at over 8 per cent per annum this decade, as the per capita consumption of rubber is 0.8 kg against 14 kg in the developed world. India is likely to become the world's third-largest producer of natural rubber after Thailand and Indonesia, Rubber Board sources said. And with crude prices unlikely to come down, synthetic rubber is likely to remain a costly alternative. With accelerating demand from automobile industry and other rubber consuming industries in developing countries, the shortage of natural rubber is likely to aggravate in coming years. There exists a huge scope for expansion causing import of machinery, technology and raw materials and export of rubber goods.

Tread Rubber Used For Cold Process

The tread of a tire or track refers to the rubber on its circumference that makes contact with the road or the ground. As tires are used, the tread is worn off, limiting its effectiveness in providing traction. A worn tire can often be retreaded. The word tread is often used casually to refer to the pattern of grooves molded into the rubber, but those grooves are correctly called the tread pattern, or simply the pattern. The grooves are not the tread, they are in the tread. This distinction is especially significant in the case of racing slicks, which have a lot of tread but no grooves. The development of advanced retread designs, quality of retread compounds and eco-friendly tyres is highlighted in the global automotive retread market, which is expected to incur revenues of nearly US$8 billion by 2022, Technavio indicated in its 2018-2022 market report. It reiterated that retread tyre’s cost-advantage is a main growth driver in the market, as it finds high adoption in commercial vehicles, especially HCVs. Indian rubber industry registered an annual turnover of $ 12,700 million in the year 2015-16, with the tyre sector contributing to $7,600 million, non-tyre sector $ 5,100 million and export $ 2,300 million As many as 6,711 manufacturing units are operating in the non-tyre manufacturing sector in India at present, which include footwear products, moulded goods, tread rubber products, foam products, tyre tube & flaps, auto and cycle parts, adhesives, dipped goods, gloves, extruded rubber goods, beltings, hoses etc.

Tyre Retreading Business

Tyre Retreading Business. Retread Tire. Start an Automobile Tyre Retreading Industry Retreading tires is the process of restoring old tires so that they can be used in automobiles. The process is technology-driven where the worn-out and damaged threads are replaced with new treads. Tyre retreading can be done using 2 methods – cold process and hot process. Currently in India retreading is done 50% by the organized sector and the remaining 50% by the unorganized sector. Tyre Retreading is a new technology. After applying this method the old tyres become serviceable and usable. The part of the tyre that comes in contact with the surface of the road is known as the tread. The tread is an integral part of the tyre and is responsible for providing traction. New treads are available in the market. In brief, in can be put on an old tyre and cured with the help of steam. Similar to the new tyres, the treated tyres can be very well used on all vehicles, irrespective of light or heavy vehicles. With a safe and new technology, which is being adopted nowadays, it will be more easy and economical to produce tyres. Recently a new technology has been developed called “Precured Tread Rubber Retreading Process” which is commonly known as “Cold Process Retreading”. As in most parts of the world, tyre retreading in India is done extensively for commercial vehicles such as trucks and busses. The primary reason for retreading tyres is to save operational costs as applying a new tread can be done at less than half the cost of a new tyre. May it be taxis or trucks, school buses or military vehicles, retreading is being used in all of them. • Retreading is highly environment friendly. When the existing tyres are made ready for further use, the manufactures save landfill space. Also, it reduces carbon dioxide emmission and saves millions of gallons of oil which is required to manufacture new tyres. • There are many economic benefits of retreading as the retreaded tyres are less pricey in comparision with the new ones. This definitely helps to save a considerable amount of money. • Retread process is not responsible for spreading large chunks of rubber on the roads and highways. It happens due to abuses like tyre failure, caused by road hazards, tyre blasts and overloading to both new tyres and retread ones. • They cost almost 30 – 50 % less than the price of a new tire. • It is a low-cost production process – for making the new tires 80% natural rubber is used whereas for retreading only 25% of natural rubber is consumed. • Properly retreaded tires have almost the same life as the new tires. • The investment is comparatively less. The major part of the investment is involved in buying expensive machinery and molds • Retreading extends the life of used tires thus making the entire process of tire making recyclable. Market Outlook Retreading tires is the process of restoring old tires so that they can be used in automobiles. The process is technology-driven where the worn-out and damaged threads are replaced with new treads. Tyre retreading can be done using 2 methods – cold process and hot process.
