Minerals, Marble, Granite, Gypsum, Quartz, Talc, Mica Projects

India is rich in natural resources. Minerals constitute the back-bone of economic growth of any nation and India has been eminently endowed with this gift of nature. There is much evidence that exploitation of minerals like coal, iron-ore, copper, lead-zinc has been going on in the country from time immemorial.  Natural stones like granite and marble are capable of taking a high polish and are therefore used as decorative stones for cladding purpose in the construction industry, as well as for monumental and memorial work. Marble carries a status symbol of luxury and it gives a long-term benefit to one who has purchased it. This is so because it is a very durable stone. The marble tiles can be used for indoor and outdoor decorations of your home. Floors, countertops, fireplaces, porticos of large or small buildings can be made elegant and luxuriant by marble. Large buildings, monuments, mansions, multi-storied buildings make use of this stone for adding that elegant decorative touch.

Since granite is a hard rock, special grinding and polishing heads are used for rapidly grinding and polishing the slabs of granite. For polishing soft stones like marble, it is necessary to have a complete surface to surface contact of the abrasive and marble. The basic principle of polishing any natural stone is to hone the surface of the stone by progressively using finer mesh of abrasives until the natural luster of the stone is obtained. A polished piece of natural stone is capable of reflecting a major portion of the light falling on it. In most modem stone processing plants, bonded abrasives are used for grinding and polishing natural stones. India is largely self sufficient in most of the minerals which include barytes, bauxite, chromite, dolomite, fluorspar, gypsum, iron ore, kyanite, limestone, manganese ore, magnesite, sillimanite, etc. except the minerals like copper, asbestos, lead and zinc, natural phosphates, sulphur and crude petroleum, in which domestic production meets the demand only partially.

India has one of the largest reserves of granite in the world and exported Rs 2,600 crore (Rs 26 billion) worth of the stone last year. Granite exports this fiscal are expected to touch Rs 2,800 crore (Rs 28 billion) and nearly one-fourth of these exports is accounted for by monument stones.

Indian granite exports have declined 33 per cent between 2006-07 and 2008-09. The sector, which relies heavily on American and European demand, was among the first to feel the heat of the sub-prime crisis. Its export revenues fell steeply in 2007-08, even before there were visible signs of a slowdown in Indian housing and industry. What perhaps explains the increase in volumes in 2007-08 is that polished granite, which commands a better price, was substituted by semi-finished blocks. Yet, prices in the latter category remained unattractive, reflecting the severity of the recession. Volumes increased by 10.2 per cent in 2007-08 over the previous year, while revenue earned from exports decreased by 17.6 per cent this year. The decline in export earnings and volumes was more pronounced in 2008-09. The export of polished granites blocks and slabs more than halved in 2008-09 at 2.75 lakh tonnes compared with 5.52 lakh tonnes in 2007, while in 2007-08 it was 4.13 lakh tonnes. Export revenue in this segment declined 51.9 per cent – more than the sector as a whole – to Rs 862.63 crore 2008-09 from Rs 1,791.98 crore in 2006-07. In 2007-08, it was Rs 1,332.56 crore. However, the export of semi-finished blocks to China has not been as badly affected. The export volumes of crude or roughly trimmed granite increased to 25.63 lakh tonnes in 2008 from 21.47 lakh tonnes in 2007. In 2009, it declined to 23.92 lakh tonnes. Exports revenue largely remained flat at Rs 1478.95 crore in 2009, compared with RS 1479.44 crore in 2008. In 2007, it was Rs 1703.37 crore. Granite accounts for 10 per cent of India’s minerals’ output. Over the last three decades the Indian granite industry has modernized to global standards. Sculptures and monuments made in India are being exported all over the world.

About 85-90 per cent of the total granite production in the country is for exports. So after this recession period over the industry will again regain its demand .This is the best time for an entrepreneur to venture into this sector.

Kaolin (Paints & Cosmetic Grade)

It is one of the most common minerals on earth and can be easily identified by its fine particle size and plate-like structure. The world's largest reserves of premium kaolin are located in the United States and Brazil. Kaolin, also known as china clay, is soft white clay which is an essential element in the manufacturing of porcelain and china and is used widely in making paper, paint, rubber, and lots of other products. In its natural form kaolin is a soft, white powder consisting mainly of the kaolinite mineral, which under electron microscope, is known to consist of generally hexagonal, platy crystal ranging in the size from approximately 0.1 to 10 micrometres. These crystals can take book like and vermicular forms, and macroscopic forms approaching the millimetre size are occasionally found. Kaolin, found in nature generally contains varying quantities of other minerals like muscovite, feldspar, anatase and quartz. In addition, basic kaolin is often stained yellow by the iron hydroxide pigments. It’s often needed to bleach clay chemically to eliminate the iron pigments and to wash with water to eliminate the other minerals to make kaolin for commercial uses. The kaolin market is estimated to be USD 4.52 Billion in 2017 and is projected to reach USD 5.52 Billion by 2022, at a CAGR of 4.1% from 2017 to 2022. The increasing demand for kaolin from various end-use industries, such as paper, ceramics & sanitary wares, fiberglass, paints & coatings, rubber, and plastics, is expected to drive the growth of the kaolin market during the forecast period. Kaolin distinguishes itself from other industrial clays, owing to its fine particle size, increased brightness, and pure coloring. Rising government spending in emerging economies such as India and China, has resulted in expansion of construction industry. This is expected to contribute toward an increased demand for kaolin.

Bauxite Calcination Plant by Rotary Kiln with Fine Grinding Ball Mill

Bauxite Calcination Plant by Rotary Kiln with Fine Grinding Ball Mill. Refractory Grade Calcined Bauxite Calcined bauxite is produced by sintering/calcining of low iron, low alkali containing raw bauxites at temperatures of 1600 - 1800 degree Celsius. In this calcination process the high refractory mineral phase’s corundum and mullite are formed. Therefore calcined bauxite is one of the most important raw materials for the production of shaped and unshaped refractories for the steel industry, foundries, glass and cement plants. Calcined bauxite is available "run of kiln" i.e. uncrushed or in fractions and as ball milled powder according to customers’ requirements, in bulk or bagged. Calcined Bauxite is obtained by calcining (heating) superior grade Bauxite at high temperature (from 850 oC to 1600 oC). This removes moisture thereby increasing the alumina content. Compared to an alumina content of about 57 % to 58 % in raw Bauxite, Calcined Bauxite has an alumina content of 82 % to 86 %. The heating is carried out in rotary kilns. Calcination is done at different temperatures ranging from 850 oC to 1600 oC depending upon the customer’s application. Calcined bauxite is used in a number of applications: • Refractory Grade Calcined Bauxite (CB - I and CB - II Grade): To make refractory grade, Bauxite is thermally treated at 1600 oC to produce Calcined Bauxite where the Alumina content is mostly above 82%. • Brown Fused Alumina, Proppants and Road Surfacing : To make the above grades, Bauxite is thermally treated at 1000 oC – 1200 oC to produce Calcined Bauxite where the Alumina content is anywhere between 80-88% depending on the requirement. • Anti-skid protection. Calcined Bauxite is an ideal aggregate for anti-skid applications. It is used extensively for vehicle skid prevention and on surfaces requiring additional safety. The bauxite may be trowelled into fresh concrete, added to paints or applied to surfaces using resin cements and adhesives. • Anti-slip protection. This material is ideal for reducing the risk of pedestrians slipping and is used in many industrial, commercial and residential applications. These include pedestrian crosswalks, stairways, factory floors and work zones, sidewalks, ship decks, boat docks, pool decks, bathtubs, and • High friction surface treatment (HFST). HFST is a cost-effective method to reduce skidding and is mainly used to make roadways safer. It is used on horizontal curves and ramps, intersections, steep grades, bridge decks, roundabouts and pavement surfaces. Studies have indicated that the application of HFST reduces vehicle crashes by up to 100%. The material is applied to surfaces using a polymer binder. • Refractories. Refractories are insulating materials that maintain their strength and chemical properties at high temperatures. They are used to line boilers, furnaces, kilns, reactors, and GLM is one of the largest importers of refractory-grade bauxite, using only the highest quality materials for our products. Calcined bauxite is used globally for its anti-skid and high friction properties to make roadways safer. It is a strong and highly durable material, which makes it ideal to prevent slips on factory floors and other surfaces. Calcined Bauxite Benefits • Extreme hardness and wear resistance • High resistance to weathering, abrasion, and polishing • High durability • Chemically stable when exposed to intense heat and acid or alkaline agents Market Outlook India currently imports 60% of its Calcined Bauxite from China. Spurred by expansion of domestic steel production, a scarcity of acceptable quality of bauxite from China and raising import cost, drives are now under way in India to produce high grade bauxite from domestic bauxite sources. At present, India is very minor producer of non-metallurgical bauxite, despite having occurrence of high grade bauxite in west coast and central India. This is attributed to limited effort to test high grade bauxite occurrence in region outside the main bauxite producing area around Gujarat. Demand for calcined bauxite in production of ceramic proppants is expected to grow by more than 5%py out to 2021 as North America and China target greater exploitation of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. Calcined Bauxite Production: India produces about 400,000 tons of calcined bauxite Global Calcined Bauxite market size will increase to Million US$ by 2025, from Million US$ in 2017, at a CAGR of during the forecast period. Demand for calcined bauxite-based refractories used principally in steel production continues unabated. The majority of standard refractory products incorporate a calcined or fire-treated form of bauxite for their raw material base. China is now also the leading producer of refractories. Outputs tends at about 23m. tonnes. In the present paper, various aspects of calcined bauxite are discussed. India’s present position is compared with leading high grade bauxite producers of World i.e. China and Guyana. Based on various R&D work, proposals are put forward to produce high grade bauxite in India by complex mining / sorting and beneficiation. China Clay Washing/Purification

China Clay is also known as kaolin & white clay. Primary clay formed by natural kaolinisation process. It is formed by decomposition of some part of feldspar mineral. White in color used in ceramic slip casting process, Pressing processes and forming process as a body former and filler. Kaolinite is a clay mineral, part of the group of industrial minerals, with the chemical composition Al2Si2O5(OH)4. It is a layered silicate mineral, with one tetrahedral sheet of silica (SiO4) linked through oxygen atoms to one octahedral sheet of alumina (AlO6) octahedra. Rocks that are rich in kaolinite are known as kaolin or china clay. China clay, one of the purest of the clays, composed chiefly of the mineral kaolinite usually formed when granite is changed by hydrothermal metamorphism. Usage of the terms china clay and kaolin is not well defined; sometimes they are used synonymously for a group of similar clays, and sometimes kaolin refers to those obtained in the United States and china clay to those that are imported. Some authorities term as china clays the more plastic of the kaolins. The global china clay market is the use of ceramic in the hydraulic fracturing method for the production of shale gas in the U.S. Thus the market demand for china clay is expected to grow significantly over the next decade especially in the U.S. The global China clay market is segmented into its type, application, and geography. On the basis of type, the market is divided into soft kaolin, hard kaolin, silicate-kaolin, and calcined kaolin. Based on application, the market is categorized into agriculture, paints, coatings and adhesives, construction, plastic, rubber and fiberglass, wire and cables, paper, and others. On the basis of region, the market is segregated into Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East and Africa. The global kaolin market size was estimated at USD 5.04 billion in 2017. It is projected to expand at a CAGR of 8.8% over the forecast period. Kaolin increases gloss, smoothness, brightness, and paint absorbency of paper. All these factors improve surface printability. These properties are expected to have a positive impact on product demand from paper and packaging industries. Kaolin clay (or China Clay, is white clay mostly composed of kaolinite, which is a hydrated aluminium silicate. The kaolin geology process relies on chemical weathering, which transforms hard granite into soft granite (“kaolinisation”). Because of the numerous inherent properties of kaolin, kaolin uses are very diverse. After it is transformed by chemical plants in China, kaolin is used by various industries, such as paper, ceramics, rubber, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Calcined & Activated Alumina

Calcined Alumina Calcined (or alpha) alumina is made by calcining a source alumina powder at 1200-1300C to convert it to pure Al2O3. This is the densest and most stable crystalline form of alumina. It is insoluble in water but is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and potassium bisulfate. When nearly 100% of the material converts to the large hexagonal, elongated tablet shaped crystals associated with the alpha phase, the product is referred to as "Tabular Alumina". Calcined aluminas are available in numerous grades based on the heat treatment applied, crystal size, soda content, and degree of thermal conversion to alpha phase. Calcined alumina is made by firing a source alumina at various temperatures, depending upon desired level of calcination (burn), into alpha alumina varying from 5 – 100% moving it to its densest and most stable form. The calcined alumina particles appear as crystalline agglomerates which are larger when the degree of calcination is higher. Calcined alumina is generally used in the manufacture of refractories, glass and enamel, tile and porcelains and ceramics, including electronic ceramics, etc. Calcined alumina is produced through the calcination (“heating”) of alumina to various temperatures. By controlling the calcination temperatures and time, the properties of the alumina can be controlled. Calcined alumina is therefore utilized in a variety of industrial applications including Structural ceramics, Technical ceramics, Polishing compounds for plastic, metal, and glass, Fillers for Rubber and Plastics, Friction - anti slip, Refractories, Paint & Coatings and Thermal Spray Powders. Calcined alumina powder is produced by calcination of alumina. The manufacturing process is carried out at various temperatures, which control hardness and abrasive properties of calcined alumina powder, such as polishing and grinding. At temperature of 1200-1300ºC, calcined alumina is easily converted into pure Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3). Demand for calcined alumina is driven by a number of factors. The major applications of calcined alumina include refractory & ceramics. The rising market penetration of high-quality steel accounts for the largest share in terms of application for refractories, in emerging economies, which drives the demand for high-end refractories, which are made from calcined alumina. The growing building & construction industry further substantiates the growth. Activated Alumina Activated alumina is manufactured from aluminium hydroxide by dehydroxylating it in a way that produces a highly porous material; this material can have a surface area significantly over 200 m²/g. The compound is used as a desiccant (to keep things dry by absorbing water from the air) and as a filter of fluoride, arsenic and selenium in drinking water. It is made of aluminium oxide (alumina; Al2O3). It has a very high surface-area-to-weight ratio, due to the many "tunnel like" pores that it has. Activated alumina in its phase composition can be represented only by metastable forms (gamma-Al2O3 etc.). Activated alumina is an excellent desiccant for drying a wide variety of liquids and gases. Activated alumina is a porous, solid form of aluminum oxide, otherwise known as Al2O3 or alumina. This is the same mineral that makes up the precious gems ruby and sapphire, with impurities being the source of the stones’ bright colors. After activated alumina has been evacuated of existing moisture by heating it, the high surface area and many pores of the material allow for the uptake of water and other molecules through adsorption. The U.S. activated alumina market was estimated at USD 217.0 million in 2016 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.8% from 2017 to 2025. The increasing research being conducted in the field of activated alumina has helped in increasing the application scope of activated alumina over the years. Activated alumina is a dry, granular chemical substance produced by de-hydroxylation i.e., the removal of hydroxyl group ion from aluminum hydroxide. This compound is treated as a desiccant, catalyst and used for filtering fluoride, arsenic and selenium in drinking water. Activated alumina has a high surface area to weight ratio due to its extensive pore structure, which is resistant to thermal shock and abrasion, and will not shrink, swell or soften when placed in water. Activated alumina is prominently used as a reaction catalyst, in the oil and gas sector, and for the treatment of water. Growing investments in water treatment infrastructure and the ever-rising demand for oil and gas have been fueling the demand for activated alumina over the past few years. These trends are expected to continue during the forecast period, driving the market to expand at a CAGR of 4.2% between 2016 and 2024. The sales of activated alumina amounted to US$770.6 mn in 2015 and are projected to be worth US$1,108.9 mn by 2024.

Alumina from Bauxite

Alumina from Bauxite. Extraction and Production of Alumina from Bauxite Alumina is the common name given to aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Alumina is produced from bauxite, an ore that is mined from topsoil in various tropical and subtropical regions. The Bayer process, discovered in 1887, is the primary process by which alumina is extracted from bauxite. Bauxite is the general name given to the hydrated oxides of aluminium. It contains varying amounts of combined water and several impurities of which ferric oxide and silica are usually predominant. It is essential that the Al2O3 (alumina) be obtained substantially free from these impurities as otherwise the iron oxide and silica would be reduced and contaminate the metallic aluminium produced in the Hall (or Heroult) Process. Uses & Applications: The superior characteristics alumina can offer make it ideal for use in many applications. Some of the most common applications outside of aluminium production are listed below. • Abrasives: Alumina is widely used in a variety of industrial abrasive materials, owing to its superior hardness and strength.
