Best Business Opportunities in Bhutan - Identification and Selection of right Project, Thrust areas for Investment, Industry Startup and Entrepreneurship Projects

The economy of Bhutan, one of the world's smallest and least developed countries, is based on agriculture and forestry, which provide the main livelihood for more than 60% of the population. Agriculture consists largely of subsistence farming and animal husbandry. The economy is closely aligned with India's through strong trade and monetary links and dependence on India's financial assistance. Most production in the industrial sector is of the cottage industry type. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian migrant labour. Model education, social, and environment programs are underway with support from multilateral development organisations.

The industrial sector is in a nascent stage, and though most production comes from cottage industry, larger industries are being encouraged and some industries such as cement, steel, and ferroalloy have been set up. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian contract labour. Agricultural produce includes rice, chilies, dairy (some yak, mostly cow) products, buckwheat, barley, root crops, apples, and citrus and maize at lower elevations. Industries include cement, wood products, processed fruits, alcoholic beverages and calcium carbide.

Bhutan’s hydropower industry accounts for 32% of the nation’s economy. The dependency on a single sector is a potential risk factor, the report states. As an alternative revenue generation sector, the government is promoting tourism, which also hopes to generate employment. Like in most countries, the Cottage and Small Industry (CSI) play a pivotal role in the overall industrial economy of Bhutan.

Business Sectors

Agriculture Industry

Agriculture in Bhutan has a dominant role in the Bhutan's economy. Approximately 80% of the population of Bhutan are involved in agriculture. Over 95% of the earning women in the country work in the agricultural sector. Majority of the refugees in this Himalayan nation are also employed in the agricultural sector. Agriculture in Bhutan is characterized by its labor-intensive nature with relatively low intensity of farm inputs.

Major crops cultivated in Bhutan are maize and rice. Maize accounts for 49% of total domestic cereal cultivation, and rice accounts for 43%. Rice is the major staple crop. Agriculture in the country includes cultivation of wheat and other minor cereal crops. Paddy is the primary crop in those regions where proper irrigation is available. Apart from paddy, other crops like wheat, barley, oil seeds, potato and different vegetables are also cultivated in these lands. The primary goals of agriculture in Bhutan are to raise the per capita income of the people living in rural areas, to enhance self-sufficiency in staple crops, and to increase the productivity per unit of farm labor and agricultural land.

Minerals and Mining

The country’s mineral industry was small and insignificant to its economy and was dominated by the production of cement, coal, dolomite, gypsum, and limestone. Known resources included deposits of beryl, copper, graphite, lead, mica, pyrite, tin, tungsten, and zinc. Mining is one of the fastest growing industries in Bhutan generating average revenue of 54 million U.S. dollars or contributing 3 percent to country's GDP.

Industrial mineral products were the primary output of Bhutan’s mineral industry and included dolomite, graphite, marble and slate, and sand and stone. The production of a variety of stone materials and energy fuels had been increasing steadily in recent years and corresponded to the increased demand for these commodities in the construction sector. While major exports of minerals are made in raw form, Bhutan processes some of its minerals into value-added products such as calcium carbide, cement, and ferrosilicon.

Accordingly, Bhutan’s policies on mining and quarrying consider inter-generational equity. This is important since minerals constitute vital raw materials for the mineral based manufacturing industries and are a major resource for economic development of a country. Bhutan is endowed with rich mineral resources that has allowed for the sustainable growth of a mineral based industry and export base. This mineral resource exploitation and value addition has helped generate employment and can contribute towards poverty alleviation.

Livestock Industry

Livestock farming practices continue to evolve in response to rapid modernization and growing economic opportunities in the Bhutan Himalaya. Animal husbandry is an integral part of farming activities in Bhutan and, especially in the high altitude or alpine regions, animal husbandry forms virtually the sole economic activity. The consumption of animal products is an important element of the Bhutanese diet.

Livestock is an integral part in all Bhutanese farming systems. While most households rear livestock for home consumption, livestock farming and nomadic herding are the predominant activities in the alpine and cool temperate zones. Over 80 per cent of rural households own cattle. Other significant livestock include poultry (reared by about 65% of rural households), pigs (38%), horses (23%), goats (15%) and yaks (2%). Inadequate pasture land and poor access to markets are significant constraints to improving production, but increasing urban demand for livestock products is encouraging farmers near urban areas to keep better breeds and improve feed and fodder management. In the livestock sector artificial insemination covers not only Jersey breeds that are high yielding but also for the production of Jatsa and Jatsam that are local high yielding varieties.

The indigenous cattle are the most important livestock genetic resources for food, animal energy and household income in Bhutan. Poultry farming is one of the important livestock farming components in Bhutan.

Hand hygiene is the best tool in preventing opportunistic infections caused by different micro organisms and to achieve this, the use of hand sanitizers becomes must in current scenario. Right hand washing and drying methods stop the chain of transmission of deadly pathogens (from the contaminated surface/site) form hands to other parts of the body. Hand sanitization is the preeminent aid in preventing nosocomial infections caused by different opportunistic microorganisms and to get this, the use of hand sanitizer becomes must in recent circumstances. Herbal hand sanitizer incorporating the leaves extracts of Ocimumcanctum Linn.(Tulsi)and Eucalyptus globules (Nilgiri), the well-known herbal combination with multidimensional activities; and to evaluate their respective antimicrobial efficacy and safety of hands. Herbal hand sanitizer was prepared using leaves extracts of Ocimum sanctum, Eugenia caryophyllus and Cymbopogon flexuous. The antibiotic sensitivity test of the prepared herbal hand sanitizer against skin pathogens was checked using disc diffusion method and results were compared with commercially available synthetic hand sanitizer. The herbal hand sanitizer gives larger inhibition zone than the commercially available synthetic hand sanitizer against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The efficacy of herbal hand sanitizer was evaluated using microorganism suspensions; which revealed that the herbal hand sanitizer is efficient in reducing higher number of microorganism from the hands as compared to commercial synthetic hand sanitizer. Thus, owing to higher antimicrobial activity and efficacy these herbal extracts can be used in the preparation of herbal hand sanitizers on commercial scale. In the absence of a vaccine or effective antiviral drugs, hand hygiene is a mainstay of efforts to prevent the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. The sanitiser contains natural extracted oils, which increase the antiseptic properties and act against bacterial contamination. It also provides cooling and natural fragrance along with moisturizing the skin upon use. India hand sanitizer market is projected to surpass $ 43 million by 2025. Growth of hand sanitizer market in India can be attributed to rising awareness about healthy lifestyle & wellness, shifting consumer preference towards convenient hygiene products and rising disposable income. Liquid Hand Wash

Hands are primary mode of transmission of microbes and infections. Hand-washing is critical in food production, food service and also important in healthcare setting, homes and day care preparations. Hand hygiene is therefore the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent the infections. Hand hygiene is the single most important, simplest, and least expensive means of preventing nosocomial infections. To protect the skin from harmful micro organisms and to prevent spreading of many contagious diseases, hand washing is absolutely an important precaution. The significance of hand washing is more vital when it is allied to health care workers because of possible contagion of bacteria that can be pathogenic or opportunistic. Liquid soaps contain antimicrobial active ingredients which take away more bacteria as compared to plain soap. For control of Staphylococcal infections in hospitals and other health care’s, it has been found that the greatest benefits from hand washing came from the first 20% of washing and very petite additional benefits were gained when hand clean-up rate was increased beyond 35%. Washing with plain soap results in more than triple the rate of bacterial infectious diseases transmitted to food as compared to washing with antibacterial hand washes. Comparing hand washes with alcohol-based solutions and washing with antibacterial for a median time of 30 seconds, each one showed that the alcohol-based hand washes reduced bacterial contamination 26% more than the antibacterial. But liquid soap and water is the more effective than alcohol-based hand rubs for reducing H1N1 influenza A virus and Clostridium diffcile spores from hands. Liquid hand soap contains anionic surfactant, cocamide dea surfactant, coco betaine as amphoteric surfactant, opaque agent as making opaque, dye, fragrance, glycerine for prevention hand outside conditions and etc. In addition, antibacterial agent for making antibacterial hand liquid soap. Making hand liquid soap for children, can be used soft ingredients. For making natural liquid hand soap as opaque or clear not changing. used natural and herbal oil, potassium hydroxide, water, glycerine, dye and fragrance. These ingredients are used to make saponification for hand liquid soap as natural. One of the best ways to prevent infection from the coronavirus is to avoid being exposed to the virus and stop it from entering in the body. Some of the easiest ways to become infected by a virus is to transfer it from hands to mouth, nose or eyes. Washing hands using hand wash or soap has a dual effect, it primarily washes the virus away from body. It also disrupts the virus so it cannot bind and infect cells. The coronavirus (COVID-19) belong to the family of enveloped viruses. The “envelop” is like a jacket made up of lipids and proteins and protects the virus from the environment and helps it to enter human cells such as lung cells. Liquid hand wash, soaps, detergents and alcohol-based hand sanitizers disrupt the envelop resulting in the inactivation of these types of viruses. The global liquid soap market size was estimated at USD 18.50 billion in 2018. Rising awareness regarding personal hygiene among adults is expected to remain a key driving factor for the market. These liquid formulations are expected to gain popularity as they have low pH levels which make them gentler and suitable for people with sensitive skin. This factor is anticipated to contribute to the widespread adoption of the product in near future. Global Hand Soap market is forecast to witness rapid growth of around 6.7% over the forecast period of 2020-2030. Of all applications, the household segment accounts for more than 70% of the market share. Escalating demand for hand soap was observed in the first quarter of 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2nd quarter, the demand is projected to follow an upward trend with increasing awareness about hand hygiene across regions. The key market players include Reckitt Benckiser Group plc.; Procter & Gamble; Unilever; 3M; Lion Corporation; GOJO Industries, Inc.; Kao Chemicals; Godrej Consumer Products; Bluemoon Bodycare; NEW AVON LLC.; and Pental Products etc.

Production of Latex & Nitrile Gloves

Nitrile is a synthetic rubber compound that is commonly used as a disposable glove material. Nitrile has a higher puncture resistance than any other glove material. Nitrile also has a better chemical resistance than Latex or Vinyl gloves. Nitrile gloves are a more hypoallergenic choice. Created from synthetic rubbers, the incidence of nitrile rubber allergy is extremely low. Nitrile gloves are not packed in powder and are easy to handle directly on removal from the box. Nitrile gloves are considered to be the ideal choice in emergency situations when the allergy status of a patient or user is not known. Nitrile gloves are extremely durable and puncture resistant. Nitrile gloves can withstand exposure to oils, solvents, and chemicals which easily destroy natural latex gloves. Nitrile gloves are commonly used as exam gloves, but due to their strength, lend themselves to multiple uses. Nitrile comes in powdered form, sterile, non-sterile and offered at different lengths from wrist to forearm. They are designed for multiple uses that include basic exam room checks, to hazardous materials handling, like working with chemotherapy chemicals. Powder Free Nitrile Gloves are anti-static in behavior, good solvent resistant, odour free, and hence useful in food and dairy industry. Powder-free gloves reduce the cause of allergies by lowering protein and chemical content. Powdered gloves are usually lubricated with cornstarch, which makes them much easier to put on. Cornstarch coatings have replaced other powdering options such as lycopodium powder and talc because these other coating types have been found to irritate tissue. Nevertheless, even cornstarch can impede healing when coming into contact with tissues, so powder-free gloves are often preferred for surgeries and other sensitive procedures. Nitrile gloves however are not as soft as latex gloves, and are not known for being easy to wear. In fact, their strength is a weakness when dealing with applications that require fine movements and dexterity. Nitrile is also slightly more expensive to produce. Latex comes directly from rubber trees. Latex gloves are the most commonly used disposable gloves because they have been the only strong disposable glove material option on the market. However, now many hospitals and clinics have begun replacing their latex gloves with nitrile gloves. Latex gloves are often preferred by healthcare providers since they provide the best service when it comes to elasticity, comfort and fit. Surgeons in particular benefit from latex gloves since they are great for sensitive work, since they offer more precision with high tactile sensitivity. While there are allergy concerns with latex gloves, they are sometimes more favorable to users over a nitrile glove mainly due to comfort and strength. Generally Latex gloves will be more comfortable, sensitive, and provide better grip, although the modern advances in nitrile glove manufacturing has seen nitrile gloves become more comfortable, thinner, with better dexterity. LATEX GLOVES from The Safety Zone provide the best feel, fit and dexterity. Latex gloves are available in both lightly powdered and powder free options in a variety of thicknesses. Lightly powdered latex gloves are produced with a food grade corn starch powder, making donning easier especially when hands are wet. Powder free gloves go through an extra process of chlorinating the gloves to ease donning. Polymer coated latex gloves provide an additional barrier to prevent latex proteins from touching the skin. The physical properties of latex offer protection from bio hazardous risks whilst superior elasticity and tensile strength. These properties provide unsurpassed user comfort and a reasonable resistance to cuts and abrasions. As latex gloves are manufactured from a naturally occurring substance, they possess greater biodegradability and are kinder to the environment than Vinyl and Nitrile gloves, which are manufactured from man-made synthetic materials. GLOVE TYPE DEFINITION ADVANTAGE PROTECTION LEVEL Latex Gloves Made of natural rubber Highest comfort, Bacteria, viruses flexibility, fit and tactile sensitivity Nitrile Gloves Made of synthetic material Stretchy, durable Chemicals, viruses Special Features Nitrile gloves • Mould to your hand for a great fit • Latex free • Good durability • Excellent puncture resistance • Have a long shelf life • Available in powdered and powder free • Can be worn for longer periods of time • Work well for high-risk situations involving infectious materials Special Features Latex gloves • Fit like a second skin • They are cost effective • They are biodegradable so better for the environment • Very elastic and strong • Preferred in the medical industry over nitrile as they are made from a natural source • Good dexterity Market of Nitrile Gloves The Global Nitrile Gloves Market is expected to reach USD 3.50 Billion by 2027. Growth in the incidences of epidemic diseases and the subsequent increase in the demand for infection prevention and control utilities are expected to drive the market demand in the forecast period. Nitrile gloves are primarily used in the medical sector as a safety tool to prevent the spreading of infection between caretakers and patients. The benefits offered by nitrile gloves include superior strength, longevity, and better protection against bloodborne pathogens. Asia Pacific market is estimated to witness the fastest growth rate of 6.5% in the nitrile gloves market. Gloves are disposable items used during medical examinations and procedures intended to prevent cross-contamination between healthcare providers and patients. Examination gloves are sized in XS, S, M and L. Some brands also offer size XL. Gloves are mainly used by healthcare professionals generally for examination and surgery. Surgical gloves are generally sized more specifically since they are worn for a much longer period of time and require excellent dexterity. There are various benefits of latex gloves such as properly fit to skin, good touch sensitivity, cost-effective, can be worn for an extended amount of time, elastic & strong and most importantly it is biodegradable. India disposable gloves market generated $303 million in 2017, and is projected to reach $760 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 12.4% from 2018 to 2025. In terms of volume, the market is growing at a CAGR of 8.3% from 2018 to 2025. Ltd., Dahanu Rubber Gloves Manufacturing Co., Plasti Surge Industries Pvt. Ltd., Safeshield India Rubber Products Pvt. Ltd., Sara Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., and 3p India. Role of gloves in covid-19 Medical gloves are used by health care personnel to prevent the spread of infection or illness. Medical gloves are disposable and include patient examination gloves and surgeon’s gloves. To help expand the availability of medical gloves, the FDA is providing regulatory flexibility, as described in the enforcement policy for gloves that is in effect during the COVID-19 public health emergency. When a person touches an object/surface contaminated by COVID-19 infected person, and then touches his own eyes, nose, or mouth, he may get exposed to the virus. Although this is not thought to be a predominant mode of transmission, care should be exercised while handling objects/surface potentially contaminated by suspect/confirmed cases of COVID-19. Nitrile gloves are preferred over latex gloves because they resist chemicals, including certain disinfectants such as chlorine. There is a high rate of allergies to latex and contact allergic dermatitis among health workers. However, if nitrile gloves are not available, latex gloves can be used. Non-powdered gloves are preferred to powdered gloves

These liquids are capable of hardening for good. Besides this one connecting feature, the two resins are very with chemicals totally different. When dealing with synthetic resins, it's important to understand the difference between differing kinds. First, there are similarities shared between all synthetic resins. They’re not too dissimilar from natural plant resins. This suggests that they have viscous liquids. These liquids are capable of hardening permanently. Besides this one connecting feature, the two resins are terribly chemically totally different. The most commonly used variety of synthetic resin is epoxy resin. These things is formed through polymerization and polycondensation reactions. They’re used as a thermosetting polymer that's used for adhesives. Epoxy resins are very sturdy. It’s even stronger than concrete, whereas also remaining waterproof. You’ll most likely notice flooring corporations using this type of resin. Synthetic resin are used in a variety of products such as plastics, paints, varnishes, and textiles. There are various kinds of synthetic resins; Acetal resins, amino resins, casein resins, epoxy resins, hydrocarbon resins, polyamide resins, etc. The classic variety is epoxy resin, manufactured through polymerization, used as a thermoset polymer for adhesives and composites. Epoxy resin is two times stronger than concrete, seamless and waterproof. Polyamide resin is another example of synthetic resins. Polyamide resins are products of polymerization of an amino acid or the condensation of a diamine with a carboxylic acid. They are used for fibers, bristles, bearings, gears, molded objects, coatings, and adhesives. The term nylon formerly referred specifically to synthetic polyamides as a class. Because of many applications in mechanical engineering, nylons are considered engineering plastics. Resins are valued for their chemical properties and associated uses, such as the production of varnishes, adhesives, lacquers, paints, rubber and pharmaceutical uses Applications:- Packaging Building Material Automotive Electronics Market outlook:- Synthetic resins are non-crystalline or viscous liquid substances. They consist of numerous synthetic materials which have similar properties to natural resins. However, the chemical composition of synthetic resins is different from natural resins. Synthetic resins are broadly differentiated into thermoplastic and thermosetting synthetic resins based on the procedure of their formation processes (esterification and/or soaping of organic compounds). Some of the common thermoplastic synthetic resins include polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS, PET, PVC, polycarbonate, polyurethane, and nylon, among others. Some of the common thermosetting synthetic resins include phenolic, polyurethanes, and epoxy resins, among others. Complementary to the changing industry dynamics, beer segment has seen a high spurt in the players operating in the market which has worsened the competition for existing players. With global bigwigs like Carlsberg, Anheuser-Busch and Heineken entering the country, the competitive landscape of the domestic beer market has changed considerably.
