Activated carbon is a black solid substance resembling granular or powdered charcoal. It is extremely porous with a large surface area, Activated carbon is produced from organic based materials such as coconut shells, palm-kernel shells wood chips, sawdust, corn cobs, seeds etc. Activated carbon prepared from Bamboo has been found to be the best in terms of surface area and adsorption capacity.Manufacture of activated charcoal is one glaring example of extracting useful product from what was considered wasteful hitherto. Activated charcoal has found use in various industries starting from water filtration to detoxification of body.

Activated carbon can be used for removal of organic chemicals, chlorine, lead, unpleasant tastes and odors in effluent or coloured substances from gas or liquid streams by the mechanism of adsorption. Adsorption can be classically defined as absorption on the surface of the material due to capillary condensation inside the multitude of pores and active sites available. Modern water purifiers come with activated carbon filter. Activated carbon water is very effective in removing chlorine from water which is cancerous if consumed.

High-grade activated carbon can be obtained from woody material like bamboo having inherent mechanical strength, high carbon and low ash content. Since India is the second largest producers of bamboo, there exists an excellent scope for producing bamboo based high-grade activated carbon if appropriate technology is developed and exploited at commercial level.India, have also made good progress in the field of manufacture of activated charcoal prepared from abundant supply of coconut shells, collected after using the kernel and coconut water.

India has been one of major exporters of activated carbon of late and is expected to do better in the coming years.

Bamboo Charcoal Manufacturing Business

Bamboo Charcoal Manufacturing Business. Production of Activated Charcoal from Bamboo Bamboo charcoal powder consists of pieces of bamboo plants, which are harvested after a minimum of five years. It is manufactured using the pyrolysis or carbonization process, which usually consists of heat treatment at the temperature of 800°C to 1200°C. The process imparts high adsorption properties to the bamboo charcoal powder, thus making it useful for a wide range of applications. Bamboo charcoal powder can attract and hold a variety of materials, minerals, chemicals, humidity, radio waves, odors, and other substances. Thus, it provides these materials with healing and detoxification characteristics. The use of bamboo charcoal powder is also popular because it is an environmentally-friendly product. Bamboo charcoal can be used as household fuel for heating and cooking, as well as in a range of purification and absorption applications, such as purifying drinking water, in air filters, in mattresses and pillows as a deodorizer, and for certain industrial purification uses. Bamboo vinegar, a by-product of the manufacturing process, is also used as an ingredient in health products. Bamboo is an excellent resource for charcoal because of its high surface area (up to 385 m2/g) and the ability to reach high temperatures (the surface temperature of bamboo charcoal can reach 700°C). Bamboo grows naturally because of the country’s largely undisturbed forests and the limited agriculture practiced in areas where bamboo proliferates. Four dzongkhags have a significant production of bamboos. These are Samtse, Samdrup Jongkhar, Tsirang and Zemgang. Bamboo charcoal can be used for a wide range of different purification and absorption application. Reduce Indoor Air Pollution - Bamboo charcoal absorbs harmful chemicals in the air. It is especially useful for absorbing formaldehyde, ammonia, benzene from paints and strong adhesives, or when antifreeze is kept indoors. Carbon Fibre

Carbon fibers are usually combined with other materials to form a composite. When combined with a plastic resin and wound or molded it forms carbon fiber reinforced polymer (often referred to as carbon fiber) which has a very high strength-to-weight ratio, and is extremely rigid although somewhat brittle. However, carbon fibers are also composited with other materials, such as with graphite to form carbon-carbon composites, which have a very high heat tolerance. Carbon fibers are, by far, the most widely used fiber in high-performance applications. This important technology has huge potential for the future and it is expected to have a significant impact in the manufacturing industry within India and, therefore, coordination and strategic road mapping actions are required. Composites have been widely used across industries like aerospace, wind energy, automotive, industrial, marine, oil and gas. Advanced carbon fiber composites are comparatively more expensive than metals. The choice of composites is tradeoff between cost and performance. As a result, carbon composites have made their impact in high performance vehicles, such as, jet fighters, space craft, racing cars, racing yachts and exotic sports cars. The values of global carbon fibre sales in these areas ($2.034 billion) do not, however, correspond to the volumes of carbon fibre used in the various application areas. The report adds that aerospace and defiance, for example, uses only 18% of the total quantity of carbon fibre but accounts for around 40% of the value of global sales. This sector consumed 15,000 tonnes of carbon fibres in 2012 and could reach 23,000 tonnes in 2016 and 37,000 tonnes in 2020. These figures are however less optimistic that those that were forecast by the specialists in previous years. Indeed, even if the pressure to use renewable energies is high and if legislation is increasingly restrictive, the policies of the public authorities in terms of subsidies and development strategies (offshore wind farms, etc.) can have a decisive influence on the market for composites. The carbon fiber market is projected to grow from USD 4.7 billion in 2019 to USD 13.3 billion by 2029, at a CAGR of 11.0% between 2019 and 2029. The market is growing due to its increasing demand from aerospace & defense, automotive, and wind energy industries. Entrepreneurs who invest in this project will be successful.

CARBON BLACK (Furnace Black Process)

Carbon black is virtually pure elemental carbon in the form of colloidal particles that are produced by incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition of gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons under controlled conditions. Its physical appearance is that of a black, finely divided pellet or powder. Its use in tyres, rubber and plastic products, printing inks and coatings is related to properties of specific surface area, particle size and structure, conductivity and color. Carbon black is also in the top 50 industrial chemicals manufactured worldwide, based on annual tonnage. Current worldwide production is about 8.1 million metric tons. Approximately 90% of carbon black is used in rubber applications, 9% as a pigment, and the remaining 1% as an essential ingredient in hundreds of diverse applications. Global consumption is forecast to maintain a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 5.6% between 2016 and 2022, reaching 19.2 million metric tons, valued at US$20.4 billion, by 2022. The most common use (70%) of carbon black is as a pigment and reinforcing phase in automobile tyres. Carbon black also helps conduct heat away from the tread and belt area of the tyre, reducing thermal damage and increasing tyre life. About 20% of world production goes into belts, hoses, and other non-tyre rubber goods. The balance is mainly used as a pigment in inks, coatings and plastics. The demand for carbon black in India stood at 984.63 thousand tonnes in 2018 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.82% during 2019-2030 to reach 1853.84 thousand tonnes by 2030. Growth in the Indian packaging industry has increased the demand for carbon black in food packaging, industrial film, lamination and carrier bags and high-quality protective packaging applications. Furthermore, the Indian government’s mission to make India a 100% electric vehicle nation by 2030 under the new National Electric Mobility Mission Plan is expected to push the demand for automobiles in the coming years. This demand in turn would aid growth in ancillary industries such as tire industry, which use carbon black as their primary raw material. Moreover, the demand for industrial rubber such as in conveyor belts and hoses is anticipated to positively influence the demand for carbon black in India during 2019-2030.
