Activated carbon, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), Activated Carbon, Activated Carbon Powder, Powdered Activated carbon (PAC), activated charcoal, activated coal, Activated Fuller Earth, Pelleted activated carbon (EAC), Impregnated carbon, Polymers coated

Activated carbon is a black solid substance resembling granular or powdered charcoal. It is extremely porous with a large surface area, Activated carbon is produced from organic based materials such as coconut shells, palm-kernel shells wood chips, sawdust, corn cobs, seeds etc. Activated carbon prepared from Bamboo has been found to be the best in terms of surface area and adsorption capacity.Manufacture of activated charcoal is one glaring example of extracting useful product from what was considered wasteful hitherto. Activated charcoal has found use in various industries starting from water filtration to detoxification of body.

Activated carbon can be used for removal of organic chemicals, chlorine, lead, unpleasant tastes and odors in effluent or coloured substances from gas or liquid streams by the mechanism of adsorption. Adsorption can be classically defined as absorption on the surface of the material due to capillary condensation inside the multitude of pores and active sites available. Modern water purifiers come with activated carbon filter. Activated carbon water is very effective in removing chlorine from water which is cancerous if consumed.

High-grade activated carbon can be obtained from woody material like bamboo having inherent mechanical strength, high carbon and low ash content. Since India is the second largest producers of bamboo, there exists an excellent scope for producing bamboo based high-grade activated carbon if appropriate technology is developed and exploited at commercial level.India, have also made good progress in the field of manufacture of activated charcoal prepared from abundant supply of coconut shells, collected after using the kernel and coconut water.

India has been one of major exporters of activated carbon of late and is expected to do better in the coming years.

Activated Carbon from Wood

Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal, activated coal, or carbo activatus, is a form of carbon processed to be riddled with small, low-volume pores that increase the surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions. Activated is sometimes substituted with active. Activated Carbon is a unique material because of the way it is filled with “holes” (voids, spaces, sites, pores,) whatever the size of molecules. Activated carbon is a non-graphitic form of carbon, which could be produced by activation of any carbonaceous material such as coconut shells, bamboo, wood chips, sawdust, coal, lignite, paddy husk etc. The process of activation is carried out in two stages. The raw material is first carbonized and then activated either by chemicals or by steam to derive the highly porous structure. Shell-based activated carbon is extensively used in the process of refining and bleaching of vegetable oils and chemical solutions, water purification, recovery of solvents, recovery of gold, in gas masks for protection against toxic gases, in filters for providing adequate protection against war gases/nuclear fall outs, etc. A wide variety of activated carbon products are available exhibiting markedly different characteristics depending upon the raw material and activation of technique used in their production. Activated carbon has been used to purify different products since Roman times. Carbon treatment is primarily based on a naturally occurring phenomenon called adsorption, in which molecules of a liquid or gas are trapped by either an external or internal surface of a solid. The phenomenon is somewhat similar to iron filings being held by a magnet. Activated carbon has a very high internal surface area and is thus an ideal material for adsorption. For Purification of liquids, the powdered form of activated carbon is added to the liquid to be purified and the mixture is agitated and finally filtered. Granulated activated carbons are used for purification of gases or liquids and are used in a vertical carbon packed column. The global activated carbon industry is estimated to be around 1.1 million metric ton. Demand for virgin activated carbon is expected to rise by around 10% annually through 2014, worldwide. The U.S is the largest market, which will also pace global growth based on anticipated new federal regulations mandating mercury removal at coal-fired power plants. The domestic market for activated carbon is fast expanding with rapid growth of several end user industries. The demand from the vegetable oil industry – the largest consumer of activated carbon is 24,000 tones. The capacity utilization ratio is reported to around 85%. Thus, due to demand it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest. Few Indian Major Players are as under • Indo German Carbons Ltd. • Ion Exchange (India) Ltd. • Triton Laboratories Ltd.

Bamboo-Based Activated Carbon Manufacturing Business

Bamboo-Based Activated Carbon Manufacturing Business. Production of Activated Carbon from Natural Sources Bamboo, (subfamily Bambusoideae), subfamily of tall treelike grasses of the family Poaceae, comprising more than 115 genera and 1,400 species. Bamboos are distributed in tropical and subtropical to mild temperate regions, with the heaviest concentration and largest number of species in East and Southeast Asia and on islands of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Activated carbon was produced from bamboo residues using carbonisation and steam activation in a high temperature reactor. Activate bamboo charcoal works great to regulate humidity, which is important for the health of hair and body. Bamboo charcoal can absorb the odors from all over the house, and can even prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. The minerals in bamboo charcoal purify water by removing harmful substances and mineralizing the water with beneficial substances. The water particles become smaller, which improves the flavor of water. Bamboo charcoal has been used for medicinal purposes for many centuries. Records indicate that charcoal was used in Hippocrates era for epilepsy, dizziness, and anemia. In Eastern medicine, it’s quite common to use charcoal as an ingredient in natural medicines. Uses and Application: Activated carbon is used in wide range of applications in gas, vapor, and liquid treatment. The value chain of activated carbon includes raw material suppliers, production process, product supply channels, end-use industries and post sales service. Bamboo charcoal can be used as household fuel for heating and cooking, as well as in a range of purification and absorption applications, such as purifying drinking water, in air filters, in mattresses and pillows as a deodorizer, and for certain industrial purification uses. Bamboo vinegar, a by-product of the manufacturing process, is also used as an ingredient in health products. Market Outlook The major end users of activated carbon are the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. The demand for powdered activated carbon is closely related to the need for purification and dicolorization of several industrial products. The global activated carbon market is projected to reach USD 8.12 billion by 2021 at a CAGR of 9.4% while in terms of volume the overall market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.4% and reach 3,857.9 KT by 2021 led by powdered activated carbon. The growing use of activated carbon in industrial applications has led to an increase in its share in the gaseous phase applications, which is expected to drive the activated carbon market in the Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, the growing use of activated carbon for soil remediation applications, as well as in pharmaceutical applications have witnessed high growth during the last five years, and is further expected to boost the growth of the activated carbon market. However, the scarcity of raw material, especially in the Asia-Pacific region is a major factor restraining the growth of the activated carbon market globally. Activated carbon demand is strongly influenced by regulations and trends in manufacturing. In industrial air treatment, mercury removal standards at coal-fired power plants have been a major contributor to growth in demand for powdered activated carbon. Activated carbon is highly used in water treatment processes. These carbons are said to reduce the specific volatile organic compounds as well as chlorine from drinking water. It also removes lead, dissolved radon, and other odor-causing compounds. Significant sources of these contaminants include pesticides, solvents, industrial wastes, or pollutants from leaking underground storage tanks. The activated carbon filter is a widely used technology, in greenhouses, for reducing the odor and control emissions from greenhouses and other growing applications. After circulating through the filter, the ambient air is returned to the greenhouse or is discharged outside.
