Wood and Wood Products, Plywood, Board, Particle Board, Wooden Furniture, Bamboo, Engineered wood, Forest product, Lumber, Tree, Wood drying, Wood plastic composite, Door, Window, Modular Furniture, Timber, Woodworking, Decorative Laminated Sheets

Wood and wood based products are an important part of our day to day life. In India, three main types of wood based panels viz., plywood including blockboards and flushdoors, fibreboards and particleboards are manufactured. Wood products include: cases, boxes, hard wood flooring, joinery, wood casks, treated rough wood, pre-fabricated wooden buildings, wood carvings, door frames and other niche items. Most wood in India is used for the manufacture of doors, window frames, wall panels, moldings and furniture. Domestic manufacturing is highly fragmented and unorganized with much of the production, particularly for doors, windows and interiors still done by individual carpenters on site. The appreciation of the need for rational utilization of wood as a raw material has resulted in the increased consumption of these products everywhere.

The share of American woods in the Indian import market is relatively small, but has grown from 0.4 percent to almost 1 percent ($12.8 million). India’s supplies of domestic wood are very limited. Because of this shortage, the import market for raw and semi-processed wood is expected to increase with demand and construction activity over the next few years.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010 will also support growth of the housing and construction sectors in India. Imports constitute 20 percent of total annual consumption of wood in India, while plantations and forestry contribute 58 and 22 percent respectively.

Logs account for the largest portion (67 percent) of all wood and wood products imported into India due to relatively lower import tariffs and a local preference for unprocessed wood. Imports of logs have increased by 72 percent to $1.14 billion. India imports logs mostly from Malaysia, Myanmar, Ghana and New Zealand due to a freight advantage and relatively lower prices.

The furniture market is the second largest wood processing segment after logs, making India a fast emerging market for high-end, value-added imported products.

The manufacture of pre-fabricated doors and windows is relatively new and the current market is growing at 10% per annum. The total annual market for furniture in India is estimated to be US$ 1.25 billion about 90% of which is for wooden products. The branded (higher quality) wooden furniture industry is growing at 15% annually.

Imports of fiber and particle board, veneer and sawn lumber have also increased over the last decade, indicating positive demand in the housing, construction, household products, furniture and packaging sectors.

Panel and plywood products are main wood products in India. Product categories include veneer sheets, particle board (composite wood core with plastic laminate finish), panel products (fiber board), plywood made from both hard and softwood (veneered panels and laminated woods), and medium density fiber board. Indian particle board and plywood industry have large producers who accounts for 15% of the total production, producing some 30 million sqm of plywood and blockboards. The Indian market for particle board and plywood is estimated in value terms, at over Rs 17billion. Of the total market, particle board accounts for over 30% of the market with the rest over 70% accounted by plywood segments. Western India has emerged as the leader in the particle board segment. A relatively new product in the industry is medium density fibre board (MDF board). Two large companies are major players in this field, one by the Birla group, Mangalam Timber and another by Nuchem Plastics.

In the Plywood segment, Greenply Industries with a market share of 4.1% leads the pack and is closely followed by Century Plywood (3.4%),Kitply Industries(3.2%) and Worthy Plywood(2.3%).Other important players in the segment, though with a very small market share, include Sarda Plywood Industries(1.8%) and Uniply Industries(1.4%).

As in many emerging markets, India is experiencing a rapid phase of urbanization with a change in lifestyles, a growing demand for engineered wood panel products, and a high infrastructure, industry sources expect positive growth for wood productssuch as plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard, oriented-strand board and laminated veneer lumber in near future.

Flush Doors

A flush door has a basic structure composed of solid blockboard core, vertical stiles, and horizontal rails that create a pre-fixed frame. The blockboard is composed of wooden strips that are placed edge-to-edge and sandwiched between veneers, then bonded under high pressure and temperature using a synthetic resin. So in a simpler term, it is a door that is made of a timber frame covered with ply from both the sides and then the hollow part inside is filled with rectangular blocks of soft wood. Then a decorative finish is given by fixing veneer on the top. A flush door is so called because it has an entirely smooth surface. If water were to be splashed on its surface, it would simply flow off its surface without accumulating. The door is the important element of the house after the roof and window. It provides safety and privacy to the occupant of the house. The door comes in the variety of style, design and patterns. Then a decorative finish is given by fixing veneer on the top. A flush door is so called because it has an entirely smooth surface. If water were to be splashed on its surface, it would simply flow off its surface without accumulating. Chip Board Particle board – also known as particleboard, low-density fibreboard (LDF), and chipboard – is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips, sawmill shavings, or even sawdust, and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded. Oriented strand board, also known as flakeboard, waferboard, or chipboard, is similar but uses machined wood flakes offering more strength. All of these are composite materials that belong to the spectrum of fiberboard products. Chipboard can also be used as a scrapbooking embellishment. High-grade chipboard can also be used to create lightweight furniture like tables, stools, benches and bookcases. This type of chipboard is covered in a veneer or laminates to make furniture, which can be less expensive than solid wood. Chipboard, is made from wood chips, sawmill shavings, sawdust, and synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded. The factors which have contributed in influencing the market demand are its affordability, ease in installation, and high density and uniformity. In spite of its density, particle board is the lightest type of fibreboard and is less strong than even medium-density fibreboard. Hardboard Hardboard, also called high-density fiberboard, is a type of fiberboard, which is an engineered wood product. It is similar to particle board and medium-density fiberboard, but is denser and much stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed. Hardboard is a composite wood product used in construction and woodworking. It is typically sold in 4' by 8' (1.2 to 2.4 m) sheets, and can range from 1/4" to 1" (6.35 to 25.4 mm) in thickness. While it is similar in appearance to plywood or particleboard, hardboard is actually constructed quite differently from these products. It is made from fine wood fibers that are compacted under high levels of heat and pressure to form a very dense, hard wooden sheet. Due to the extreme heat and pressure levels, there is usually no need to use adhesives or binding agents to hold the wood fibers together. Insulating Board Insulating board: a board with insulating properties especially : a structural or finish material that consists of sheets of lightly compressed vegetable pulp variously finished and is used especially for its thermal insulating effect resulting from great numbers of minute included air spaces. The global market for thermal insulation is benefitting from government-backed environmental regulations for conservation of energy in buildings. In particular, governments in cold countries are actively promoting zero energy loss buildings that can be attained by means of reliable thermal insulation materials. As per the analysis revealed by the institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDEA), thermal insulation improvements can account for up to 30% drop in heat and air conditioning consumption to translate into energy and money savings and reduction in CO2 emissions as well.

Shisham (Indian rosewood)Plantation

Shisham is the best known economic timber species of the rosewood genus sold internationally, but it is also used as fuel wood and for shade and shelter. After teak, it is the most important cultivated timber tree of Bihar, which is the largest producer of shisham timber in India. In Bihar, the tree is planted on roadsides, along canals and as a shade tree for tea plantations. It is also commonly planted in southern Indian cities like Bangalore as a street tree. Sheesham is usually dried before being used in furniture manufacturing, a process commonly known as seasoning. Locally sheesham is left in wide open areas to dry under the sun for about six months. Commercially, sheesham is dried in closed chambers with hot air circulation for about seven to fifteen days, depending on weather conditions. The ideal moisture level is supposed to be 5-6% for thinner pieces and up to 11% for thicker ones, depending on use. Anything lower than this can cause sudden cracking of the final products. Sheesham (Dalbergia) is a fast growing tropical hardwood. Historically known as ‘Indian Rosewood?, it has been in great demand for centuries for musical instruments and fine inlay work in furniture. Much loved by wood turners and cabinet makers - it provides them with material in two distinctive colours; rich, dark ‘heartwood? and contrasting delicate, pale ‘sapwood?.

Wood Pulp Manufacturing Business

Wood Pulp Manufacturing Business. Setting up Pulp Production Plant. Pulp for Papermaking Wood pulp is wood that has been cut up into small pieces and crushed. Wood pulp is used to make paper. The quality of wood pulp plays a major role in deciding the absorbing quality of sanitary napkins. Wood pulp is naturally derived from trees, cotton and other plant materials. It’s lightweight, strong, a conductor of electricity, isn’t harmful to humans and can be produced at almost no cost. Indeed, pulp mills are becoming more than just a source of wood pulp nowadays. The new generation of pulp mill is a platform for extracting environmentally-friendly and sustainable raw materials from wood for applications which have long been dominated by synthetic raw materials and chemicals. Wood pulps may be classified into two general groups, mechanical and chemical. Mechanical pulp, generally called ground wood, is usually produced by a mechanical grinding process and is not further classified except as fine, coarse, or bleached. Chemical pulps are classed as unbleached sulfite (strong and news grade), bleached sulfite (dissolving and paper grade), bleached and unbleached sulfate (kraft), and soda. “Semi chemical” is a term applied to a process of cooking followed by mechanical treatment. Spruce, balsam fir, and hemlock are considered the best woods for sulfite and mechanical pulping; several varieties of pine are used for sulfate (kraft) pulping; hardwoods are pulped by all of the pulping processes. Wood pulp is one of the most important global traded products due to its high demand in the paper production industry. The production and trade of wood pulp have become the most important industries in many countries. The pulp is a lignocellulosic fibrous material prepared by chemically or mechanically separating cellulose fibers from wood, fiber crops, or waste paper. Market Outlook The increasing use of cellulose Nano fibers is one of the major trends being witnessed in the global dissolving wood pulp (DWP) market 2018-2022. Cellulose Nano fibers are fabricated via electro spinning of DWP and are widely used in various applications such as cosmetics manufacturing, food industry, and Nano composites. Cellulose Nano fibers can also be used to manufacture medicines, electronic devices, and filter materials. Thus, DWP producers will focus on the manufacturing of cellulose Nano fibers during the forecast period. The global wood pulp market is expected to witness a CAGR of 2.1% during the forecast period (2018 – 2023). In 2015, US exported USD 8,704,333 thousand worth of wood pulp, while in the year 2016 the imports totaled USD 8,442,556 thousand. It exports most of if its wood pulp to China, India, Japan Canada, and Indonesia. The most important factor driving the wood pulp industry is the growing global demand and consumption for tissue paper. The US is the largest consumer of tissue paper in the world, on an average 25 kg of tissue is used annually per person in the country. In the US, 37% of the tissue used is in the kitchen as kitchen towel. A noticeable trend in the global pulp market is the solid adoption of chemical wood pulp for, fine manufacturing high quality paper. Further, semi-chemical pulping is used in preparing neutral solutions that find usage in cooking wood chips. The semi-chemical pulping is comparatively cheaper than pulp manufactured from other chemicals, and this is boding well for their uptake in manufacturing magazines, paper boards, cartons, and tissue paper. Wood pulp imports are expected to increase from 18 million tonnes in 2014 to 20.7 million tonnes in 2017 and 24.3 million by 2022. India is one of the largest importers of wood pulp in the world. With a population of about 1.2 billion people, the demand for paper and wood pulp is very high in India. Despite this harvesting timber for commercial use has been heavily restricted, therefore India has to import wood pulp to meet its growing domestic market demand. With a large population and limited resource access, India remains an attractive market for global wood pulp exporters.
