Wood and Wood Products, Plywood, Board, Particle Board, Wooden Furniture, Bamboo, Engineered wood, Forest product, Lumber, Tree, Wood drying, Wood plastic composite, Door, Window, Modular Furniture, Timber, Woodworking, Decorative Laminated Sheets

Wood and wood based products are an important part of our day to day life. In India, three main types of wood based panels viz., plywood including blockboards and flushdoors, fibreboards and particleboards are manufactured. Wood products include: cases, boxes, hard wood flooring, joinery, wood casks, treated rough wood, pre-fabricated wooden buildings, wood carvings, door frames and other niche items. Most wood in India is used for the manufacture of doors, window frames, wall panels, moldings and furniture. Domestic manufacturing is highly fragmented and unorganized with much of the production, particularly for doors, windows and interiors still done by individual carpenters on site. The appreciation of the need for rational utilization of wood as a raw material has resulted in the increased consumption of these products everywhere.

The share of American woods in the Indian import market is relatively small, but has grown from 0.4 percent to almost 1 percent ($12.8 million). India’s supplies of domestic wood are very limited. Because of this shortage, the import market for raw and semi-processed wood is expected to increase with demand and construction activity over the next few years.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010 will also support growth of the housing and construction sectors in India. Imports constitute 20 percent of total annual consumption of wood in India, while plantations and forestry contribute 58 and 22 percent respectively.

Logs account for the largest portion (67 percent) of all wood and wood products imported into India due to relatively lower import tariffs and a local preference for unprocessed wood. Imports of logs have increased by 72 percent to $1.14 billion. India imports logs mostly from Malaysia, Myanmar, Ghana and New Zealand due to a freight advantage and relatively lower prices.

The furniture market is the second largest wood processing segment after logs, making India a fast emerging market for high-end, value-added imported products.

The manufacture of pre-fabricated doors and windows is relatively new and the current market is growing at 10% per annum. The total annual market for furniture in India is estimated to be US$ 1.25 billion about 90% of which is for wooden products. The branded (higher quality) wooden furniture industry is growing at 15% annually.

Imports of fiber and particle board, veneer and sawn lumber have also increased over the last decade, indicating positive demand in the housing, construction, household products, furniture and packaging sectors.

Panel and plywood products are main wood products in India. Product categories include veneer sheets, particle board (composite wood core with plastic laminate finish), panel products (fiber board), plywood made from both hard and softwood (veneered panels and laminated woods), and medium density fiber board. Indian particle board and plywood industry have large producers who accounts for 15% of the total production, producing some 30 million sqm of plywood and blockboards. The Indian market for particle board and plywood is estimated in value terms, at over Rs 17billion. Of the total market, particle board accounts for over 30% of the market with the rest over 70% accounted by plywood segments. Western India has emerged as the leader in the particle board segment. A relatively new product in the industry is medium density fibre board (MDF board). Two large companies are major players in this field, one by the Birla group, Mangalam Timber and another by Nuchem Plastics.

In the Plywood segment, Greenply Industries with a market share of 4.1% leads the pack and is closely followed by Century Plywood (3.4%),Kitply Industries(3.2%) and Worthy Plywood(2.3%).Other important players in the segment, though with a very small market share, include Sarda Plywood Industries(1.8%) and Uniply Industries(1.4%).

As in many emerging markets, India is experiencing a rapid phase of urbanization with a change in lifestyles, a growing demand for engineered wood panel products, and a high infrastructure, industry sources expect positive growth for wood productssuch as plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard, oriented-strand board and laminated veneer lumber in near future.

PARTICLE BOARD FROM RICE HUSK - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Rice hulls (or rice husks) are the hard protecting coverings of grains of rice. Construction industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in India. Rapid construction activity and growing demand of houses has lead to the short fall of traditional building materials. Bricks, Cement, sand, and wood are now becoming scares materials. Wood or wood based composite boards with lightweight & high strength are still a preferred option for construction due to their reasonable costs. The growing shortage of wood has led to the development of suitable alternative materials. Rice husk particle board is one such material which is being considered as a potential substitute for wood & wood based boards. Agricultural waste or residue is made up of organic compounds from organic sources such as rice straw, oil palm empty fruit bunch, sugar cane bagasse, coconut shell, and others. Rice husk from paddy (Oryza sativa) is one example of alternative material that can be potentially used for making particle board. Rice husk is unusually high in ash, which is 92 to 95% silica, highly porous and lightweight, with a very high external surface area. Its absorbent and insulating properties are useful to many industrial applications, such as acting as a strengthening agent in building materials. Rice husks are processed into rectangular shaped particle boards. Most particle boards produced is in the intermediate density range from 0.40 to 0.80 g/cm3, low density boards in the range from 025 to 0.40 g/cm3 are insulating type whereas high density boards in the range from 0.80 to 1.20 g/cm3 are called hard board type. Industry size estimated at Rs. 1,000 Crores, about 0.49 mln. m3 90 % Pre laminated, 10% plain 60% Cheaper than Plywood Industry growing at around 20 %, 50% imported, Dominated by organized sector, Highly profitable from agro based raw materials. The Indian market for particleboard and plywood is estimated in value terms, at over Rs 17 billion. Of the total market, particleboard accounts for over 30% of the market with the rest over 70% accounted by plywood segments. Particle boards are slowly gaining acceptance as a substitute for other board materials such as plywood and block boards and even for sawn timber whenever it is competitive in price. This trend is accepted to strengthen further in the coming years as the availability of plywood, blackboards and timber is declining and their prices are showing an upward trend. As the pressure on the limited forest resources increases there would be a greater need to manufacture reconstituted wood boards such as particle boards which is normally manufactured from forest management wastes whereas sawn timber and plywood and block boards require prime quality logs. As in many emerging markets, India is experiencing a rapid phase of urbanization with a change in lifestyles, a growing demand for engineered wood and agro based panel products, and a high infrastructure, industry sources expect positive growth for wood and agro based products such as plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard, oriented-strand board and laminated veneer lumber in near future. So, there is a good scope of the product in the near future.

CHIP BLOCK (COMPRESSED WOOD) - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Wood waste is, by far, the largest portion of the waste stream generated from wood working Industry. Almost everyone in the woodworking business has a problem with wood scrap, chips and sawdust occurring as a by-product of woodworking. From the mill to the finished product, this offal represents an impressive amount, approximately 50 percent and is usually categorized as waste. Piles of wood waste can be quickly turned into piles of savings and profits with the proper wood waste disposal system. Wood waste generated at residential and commercial wood frame construction sites offers a greater potential for reuse due to the ease of separating the wood during the various stages of construction. Cut-offs and scraps generated during the framing and trimming stages constitute a relatively clean and homogeneous waste steam that can make an excellent feedstock for engineered wood production. This type of wood waste represents a highly desirable form of wood waste that processors are eager to obtain. Hence all these alternatives can save money in avoided disposal fees and potentially generate income from the sale of salvageable materials. Shavings and sawdust may be reground into wood flours, or the wood flour may be recovered as sized dust materials that have been screened and separated. Wood flour has major industrial markets in industrial fillers, binders and extenders in industrial products like epoxy resins, fertilizers, adhesives, absorbent materials, felt roofing, inert explosive components, ceramics, floor tiles, cleaning products, wood fillers, caulks and putties, soil extenders and a vast array of plastics. Some wood flours like mesquite may be used in edible flavorings for human or pet consumption. Wood/sawdust chip block are generally used as packing components. They are also used as the feet of wooden pallet in packaging. Wood-fired systems using sawdust, shavings or shop-produced wood waste account for 88 percent of power production, with landfill gas accounting for 8 percent, agricultural waste 3 percent and anaerobic digesters 1 percent of power production (NREL data). Some power companies co fire biomass with coal to save fuel costs and earn emissions credits. Using wood waste or other biomass in the fuel mix enhances their competitiveness in the market place. Added to decreased production and less supply to meet what had been the demand, there has been increasing demand for sawdust from the bio energy sector as more consumers are incorporating pellet stoves and pellet fueled hot-water boilers into their homes. This has led to increasing numbers of wood pellet producers, especially in the northern and northeastern states. The increased demand for sawdust and increased price for the commodity has primarily impacted livestock producers, particularly dairy farmers and hog producers who use sawdust as part of a composting system for decomposing quarantined carcasses. There is a very good demand and market potential for this product.

CELLULOSE ACETATE - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Cellulose acetate is a man-made substance that is derived from the naturally occurring organic compound - cellulose. Cellulose is the main structural ingredient of plants, and is usually considered to be the most common organic compound on earth. Cellulose acetate fibres are used for textiles and clothing. Cellulose acetate is also used in filtering and other applications like magnetic computer tape, wound dressings, personal hygiene products, absorbent cloths and wipes, as specialty papers, as filter media, including cigarette filters etc. Such materials are often referred to as “tow”. Cellulose acetate film is also used in photography. Cellulose acetate polymers have some good properties like good toughness, deep gloss, and high transparency with a feel that can be described as “natural”. Commercially, cellulose acetate is made from processed wood pulp. The pulp is processed using acetic anhydride to form acetate flake from which products are made. Coming from wood pulp, means that unlike most man-made fibres, it comes from a renewable resource and is biodegradable. Another technique for producing cellulose acetate involved treating cotton with acetic acid, using sulfuric acid as a catalyst. Cellulose acetate is available in the form of flake, powder, granules of fibre and the flakes, which are non hazardous. Major players profiled in the report include Celanese Corporation, Celanese Acetate, Daicel Chemical Industries, Eastman Chemical Company, Mitsubishi Rayon Company Limited, Primester, Rhodia Acetow GmbH, and SK Chemicals Co. Ltd. Cellulose acetate is a mature product and has experienced a decline in volumes in practically all major world areas except China, Central Europe and Russia during the last several years. New polymers and textiles with enhanced properties have eroded textile fiber applications formerly held by cellulose acetate. It is estimated that the global market will grow at 1 to 2% per year to reach 840,000 to 850,000 tonnes by 2015. The world cellulose acetate fiber market is predominantly controlled by smaller cigarette filter tow manufacturing companies, which are also engaged in the manufacture of textile fibers. There is no production of cellulose acetate in India. Most of the demand is met by imports. Demand for cellulose acetate in all major global markets has matured over the years, while regions such as Russia, Central Europe and China continue to pose large demand for cellulose acetate, largely driven by the growing filter tow market. Healthy growth in the number of smokers in regions such as Eastern and Central Europe, India, China and Latin America is being attributed as a major factor driving growth of tow consumption in these regions. This is directly boosting the cellulose acetate market. Moreover, emergence of newer legislations that demand for lesser emission of nicotine and tar in the smoke are paving way for increased use of filter tows, and the absence of stringent rules and regulations to guide the consumption of cigarettes is further bolstering the demand for cellulose acetate.

ACTIVATED CARBON FROM BAMBOO - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Activated carbon is a non graphite form of carbon and is micro crystalline in nature. It is extensively used in various industries as a very good adsorbent for odour or colour. There are two varieties of activated carbon viz gas phase or the liquid phase adsorbents. The liquid phase activated carbon is usually powder or granular form where as the gas phase adsorbent is hard granules like dust free pellets. Besides the liquid phase and gas phase classification of activated carbon, into grades based on the chemical properties it possesses such as its methylene blue (MB) value, surface area, ash content, iron content, pH factor and adsorption quality of carbon. The term activated carbon, active carbon, or active charcoal is usually applied to amorphous carbons possessing higher adsorption capacity their wood or animal charcoal. Many carbon of industrial value are prepared from coal and from organic vegetable and animal matter. The resulting amorphous products include Charcoal coke, and petroleum coke. Carbon as such is probably, the most widely distributed element in nature. It occurs in two allotropic crystalline forms, viz, graphite (hexagonal system) and diamond (isomeric system), The former is soft and weak while diamond is hard and transparent. A large variety of raw materials are available for the manufacture of these products Coal, petroleum coke, and wood charcoal are activated by gas activation. Paddy and groundnut husk, saw dust, bagasse molasses, straw, tree bark, bagasse, cocoa bean, shells, bamboo, distillery slop, waste mahua flowers and various industrial wastes have been utilized for the production of active carbons by chemical activation. Small quantities of activated carbons have been manufactured indigenously on commercial scale from paddy husk, bagasse and filter press mud particularly for use in the refining of gur. Many carbonaceous materials such as petroleum, coke, saw dust, lignite, coal, peat, wood charcoal, nutshells, and fruit pits may be used for the manufacture of activated carbon, but the properties of the finished material are governed not only by the raw material but by the method of activation used. Activated carbons form two main classes, those used for adsorption of gases and vapors, for which a granular material is generally employed and those used in purification of liquid for which a powdered material is desired. Due to the expansion of pharmaceutical and vegetable oil industry the demand of activated carbon is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. Apart from demand in Indian market, there is also huge demand of activated carbon in foreign market for the high quality activated carbon. It is very clear that there exists very good scope for this product and it can be exploited easily. Few Indian Major Players are as under: Indo German Carbons Ltd. Ion Exchange (India) Ltd. Chipboard Industry - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Chipboard industry is basically agriculture based and a major input for Furniture Industry. Chipboard is made up of wood chips bound together with resin and pressed into a flat, rectangular shape. Pieces of wood which are too small, warped or otherwise defective for use as lumber are splintered into small chips, and mixed with sawdust. A synthetic resin is added, usually urea formaldehyde, to hold the chips together and increase the strength and hardness of the finished product. The mixture is then heat-formed under pressure to create a smooth, rigid board. Mango & Poplar wood is raw material used for its production. Chipboard is made by gluing layers and fragments of recycled paper together to form a larger piece of material. The adhesive is applied using heat and pressure. This insures the material becomes rigid and feels smooth to the touch. The thickness of the chipboard ranges from very thin to very thick. Applications: Chipboard and plywood are the major inputs for the furniture industry, which is the biggest user of chipboard, accounts for approx. 60% of the total demand for the product. The wood used in furniture making generally comprises Shesham, Chirh, Pine, Oak, Burmah, Teak, Plywood, Kikar and Bamboos. Recently, chipboard is also extensively used for this purpose, which is considered a healthy sign for the chipboard industry. Although the quality of chipboard so far produced in the country has not improved up to the world standard, yet with the passage of time for product’s diversified uses, easy to handle, economical and many other factors, the use of chipboard is likely to increase. Market Scenario: Chipboard is inexpensive and relatively easy to produce and use. This industry has reasonable potential to attract new markets abroad by providing high quality board. Banking policies for housing loans are also playing an important role in the boost of the housing sector. The construction style has absolutely changed and demand of chipboard and laminated board has significantly increased. Chip board is not only used in country but also exported to Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia & to Gulf States in form of furniture. Due to increase in population and need of constructing new houses it is expected that demand for chipboard will rise ultimately.

Deck Wood (Wood and Plastic Composite) - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities

Wood plastic composite products is a new type composite material booming in recent years, refers to the use of polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, etc. It is mainly used for building materials, furniture, logistics, packaging and other industries. According to the plastic material, there are mainly PVC wood products, PE wood products, HDPE wood composite products etc. Wood plastic composites (WPCs) are composite materials made of wood fiber/flour and thermoplastic(s) (includes PE, PP, PVC etc.).Chemical additives, as a third composition component, are practically invisible (except mineral fillers and pigments, if added) in the composite structure. They provide for almost complete integration of polymer and wood flour (powder) while facilitating optimal processing conditions. In addition to wood fiber and plastic, WPCs can also contain other ligno cellulosic and inorganic filler materials. WPCs are a subset of a larger category of materials called natural fiber plastic composites (NFPCs), which may contain no cellulose based fiber fillers such as pulp fibers, peanut hulls, bamboo, straw, digestate, etc. Plastic lumber products began appearing in Indian markets in the late 1980s. Its development was stimulated both by the rising volume of largely un recycled plastic waste for which uses were needed as well as by increasing consumer interest in more durable, lower maintenance outdoor products such as decking and fencing. The major selling points for composite lumber are that it is free of potentially hazardous chemicals, and made largely from long lasting, low maintenance, recycled materials. It is, often promoted as an environmentally preferable or green alternative to other decking materials. In this paper we examine the performance of wood plastic composite (WPC) decking and its environmental properties. Uses & Application Wood plastic composites are still new materials relative to the long history of natural lumber as a building material. The most widespread use of WPCs in North America is in outdoor deck floors, but it is also used for railings, fences, landscaping timbers, cladding and siding, park benches, molding and trim, window and door frames, and indoor furniture. Wood plastic composites were first introduced into the decking market in the early 1990s. Manufacturers claim that wood plastic composite is more environmentally friendly and requires less maintenance than the alternatives of solid wood treated with preservatives or solid wood of rot resistant species. These materials can be molded with or without simulated wood grain details. Market Survey Wood Plastic Composites (WPCs) are defined as composite materials that contain thermoplastics and wood in various forms. Mostly, either the polymer or the fiber, or both, can come from recycled materials. Because of the limited thermal stability of wood, only plastics that can be processed at temperatures below 392 degrees Fahrenheit are used in WPCs. The average product carries about 50% wood, generally in particulate form, such as wood flour or very short fibers. WPCs represent one of the rapidly growing markets within the plastics industry. Double digit growth is expected through 2011 for WPCs used as replacement for treated wood in building products and related applications. However, WPC lumber will see much faster growth through 2011, posting gains of 14.3% pa to reach US$2.6. Composite lumber demand will be fueled by strong demand in decking applications. In addition, rapid growth in windows and door applications, as well as smaller niche end uses (porches, site and leisure furniture) will support demand going forward. Among the major product categories window and door applications for WPCs are anticipated to post the most rapid gains through 2011. As with other applications, WPC window and door components are making inroads because of their lower maintenance requirements, durability in exterior applications and similarities to wood. Decking applications are projected to see strong gains through 2011, continuing to increase its relative share of the composite and plastic lumber industry.
