Soaps and Detergents are cleaning products that have become an essential part in our daily lives. Cleaning products play an essential role by safely and effectively removing dirts, germs and other contaminants, and thus promote a hygienic lifestyle.

Toilet soaps account for the largest single share of about 10% in the Rs 480 billion FMCG market. The toilet market is getting saturated at a high penetration level of 98% and is growing at a very modest rate. The toilet soap, once only an urban phenomenon, has now penetrated practically in all areas including remote rural areas. The incremental demand flows from population increase and rise in the usage norm impacted as it is by a greater concern for hygiene. Increased sales revenues would also expand from upgradation of quality or per unit value.

The market is littered over with several leading national and global brands and a large number of small brands which have limited markets. The popular and premium brands include Lifebuoy, Lux, Cinthol, Liril, Rexona, Shikaki, Nirma, Dettol etc.to name a few. The inventory, however, changes by the quarter-if not by the month.

The market is expected to grow at rates ranging from under 4% to around 4.5%. These are very modest rates considering that the lifestyles not only of urbanites, but even of well-off rural folks are changing at a very high pace.

The leader in the toilet soap category, HLL enjoys a high market share, followed, a way behind by Godrej Consumer Products, Nirma, Reckitt Benckinser etc.

Detergent powders are laundry-cleaning products that are made using a synthetic surfactant in place of the metal fatty acid salts, which are used in soaps. Made in powder form, these detergents are also sold as laundry powders, hard surface cleansers, etc. Majority of the powder detergents has soap in their mixture of ingredients; however they basically function more as a foam depressant than as a surfactant. Detergents ,as a constituent of the overall chemicals industry, accounts for a near 9% of the total demand for all chemicals estimated at around Rs 315 billion. Detergents, chemically known as alfa olefin sulphonates (AOS) are used as fabric brightening agent, anti-deposition agent, and stain remover and as a bleacher. The overall market is estimated at around Rs 28 billion. A major input for the production of detergents is a petrochemical, Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB), while soaps rely more on an inorganic chemical, caustic soda, a s a major input.

Detergents are available as powder, bars and liquids. Bars make up for less than half of the market, while powders have more than a third of the market. Liquids have 12% presence in the market. The bar market is dominated by Hindustan Lever(HLL) with a share of over 40% swayed by its brands.-Rin,wheel,555,shakti,OK.

The super-premium market, making up for around 10% of the overall detergents market, is dominated by Surf Excel from HLL and Ariel from proctor & Gamble. The two together have a near 90% market with the rest coming in from players like Henkel SPIC.

In the sub premium segment, Nirma from Nirma Soaps and Wheel from HLL are the major players with small presence from an array of brands like Trilo, Hipolin, Tide, Key, Chek, and others.

Toilet soaps and detergents, despite their divergent brands, are not well differentiated by the consumers. It is, therefore, not clear if it is the brand loyalty or experimentation lured by high volume media campaign, which sustains them. A consequence is that the market is fragmented and mercurial. It is obvious that this must lead to a highly competitive market.

Detergent and Cleaning Powder Manufacturing Process

Cleansing agents soaps and detergents are made from hydrocarbons obtained from crude oil. In washing soap manufacturing process, sulphuric acid is added to the hydrocarbons to make surfactant.

So, what are detergents chemically? They are surfactants with added ingredients to make them more efficient. Soap powder manufacturers usually add builders for this. There are two preferred methods used in the soap and detergent industry. These are the processes you are likely to find in use if you visit any washing powder factory.

In this process, detergents and soaps are made by first mixing ingredients in a blender. Resulting liquid detergents are dried on a conveyor belt and packaged as powder soap.

2). Agglomeration Method

Cleaning powder is made by first mixing ingredients in an agglomerator. Liquid ingredients are then sprayed on the dry mix and blended more. The resulting mixture is dried and pulverized into an industrial soap powder.

Acid slurry manufacturing business plan

Most detergents used for cleaning clothes and utensils contain acid slurry. A feasibility study on liquid soap production pdf will not be complete without a plan for acid slurry supply.

An acid slurry manufacturing business plan has the following basic components:

1. Description of the chemical nature of acid slurry and its preparation. It should also include cleansing action of soap and detergent project and soap and detergent chemistry.

2. Justification for the need for acid slurry manufacturing plant.

Production Unit of Liquid Washing Soap, Scouring Powder, Toilet/Tiles Hard Stains Remover Liquid & Detergent Powder - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process

Laundry detergent, or washing powder, is a type of detergent (cleaning agent) that is added for cleaning laundry. In common usage, "detergent" refers to mixtures of chemical compounds including alkylbenzenesulfonates, which are similar to soap but are less affected by hard water. In most household contexts, the term detergent refers to laundry detergent vs hand soap or other types of cleaning agents. While detergent is still sold in powdered form, liquid detergents have been taking major market shares in many countries since their introduction in the 1960s. A detergent powder is a surfactant or a mixture of surfactants with "cleaning properties in dilute solutions. These substances are usually alkyl benzenesulfonates, a family of compounds that are similar to soap but are more soluble in hard water, because the polar sulfonate (of detergents) is less likely than the polar carboxyl (of soap) to bind to calcium and other ions found in hard water. Powder detergents work because they are amphiphilic - partly hydrophilic (polar) and partly hydrophobic (non-polar). Their dual nature facilitates the mixture of hydrophobic compounds (like oil and grease) with water.

Production Unit of Liquid Washing Soap, Perfumed Bleach for the Wash of White Cloths, Toilet/Tiles Hard Stains Remover Liquid , Detergent Powder - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research

Bleach is a chemical compound derived from natural sources used to whiten fabrics. Bleach works by the process of oxidation or the alteration of a compound by the introduction of oxygen molecules. A stain is essentially a chemical compound, and the addition of bleach breaks down the molecules into smaller elements so that it separates from the fabric. Detergent and the agitation of the washing machine speed up the cleaning process. The disinfecting properties of bleach work in the same manner—germs are broken down and rendered harmless by the introduction of oxygen. In industry, different forms of bleach are used to whiten materials such as paper and wood, though most bleach is used to launder textiles. Bleach aids detergents in the removal of soil and stains. There are two types of bleach commonly used in home laundry: chlorine bleach or sodium hypochlorite and oxygen bleach. Through a process of oxidation, bleach changes the soil into soluble particles to be washed away by detergents in the washing process. Bleach helps to whiten and brighten washable fabrics and some bleach disinfects fabrics by killing bacteria. Stain removal is the process of removing a mark or spot left by one substance on a specific surface like a fabric. A solvent or detergent is generally used to conduct stain removal and many of these are available over the counter. Cleaning compositions that effectively disinfect and clean hard surfaces such as those in lavatories and bathrooms, particularly toilet bowls, are well known. Typical cleaning compositions provide effective coverage of the treated surfaces to ensure that contact between the cleaning composition and contaminants present on the surface occur. Ineffective disinfection and cleaning of the surface often is the end result without such contact, particularly for inner toilet bowl surfaces. For pitched toilet bowl surfaces, viscous cleaning compositions can provide good coverage and retention, particularly vertically sloped interior surfaces of a toilet bowl. Therefore, it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest

Acid Slurry (From Linear Alkyl Benzene)

Acid slurry or alkyl benzene sulphonate is prepared by sulphonation of Linear Slkyl Benzene (LAB) with a suitable sulphonating agent. Batch sulphonation with either diluted SO2 gas or concentrated sulphuric acid or a mixture of 20% oleum and 98% sulphuric acid or oleum alone. Linear alkyl benzene is the raw material used to manufacture linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LABSA), an active ingredient in the formulation of detergents. LABSA eliminates dirt by its physicochemical mechanism and it is one of the surfactants most widely used in liquid cleaners and in powder. LABSA has been used for more than 45 years in the manufacture of detergents and it is known for its excellent quality/price ratio. The global linear alkyl benzene (LAB) market is expected to register a CAGR of 3.15% during the forecast period, 2018 - 2023. Linear alkyl benzene, an organic compound, is an intermediary in the production of surfactants, which is mainly used in detergents. LAB removes oil and fatty soil absorbed into the fabric, textile or any other material. LAB is mostly used to manufacture LAS to produce detergents, house cleaners, fabric softeners, and soap bars. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (LABSA) is the largest-volume synthetic surfactant because of its relatively low cost, good performance. LAB is straight chained and can be dried to a stable powder, which are biodegradable. LAB is also required for the manufacturing of LABSA and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), which comprises the largest global share in synthetic surfactant sector. About 83-87% of LAS is being used in household detergents, dishwashing liquids, laundry liquids, laundry powders, and other household cleaners. Heavy-duty laundry liquids are used for blankets, carpets, and bed-sheets while light-duty laundry liquids are used for regular clothes. Production of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid (LABSA)

Production of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid (LABSA). A major ingredient of Household Detergents, Laundry Powders, Laundry Liquids, Dishwashing Liquids, Other Household Cleaners Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonic Acid can be neutralized with caustic soda (NaOH) to form sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate-an extensively applied anionic surfactant. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid is the largest-volume synthetic surfactant because of its relatively low cost, good performance, the fact that it can be dried to a stable powder and the biodegradable environmental friendliness as it has straight chain. LABSA is not inflammable substance and can dissolve in water, but not in organic solvent. LABSA is quite absorbent and its biodegradability is above 90%. Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonic Acid is extensively applied anionic surfactant. It is raw material for detergent industry characterized by detergency, foam, moisture, and emulsion and dispersing. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (LABSA) is prepared commercially by sulfonating linear alkylbenzene (LAB). Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), the world’s largest-volume synthetic surfactant, which includes the various salts of sulfonated alkylbenzenes, is widely used in household detergents as well as in numerous industrial applications. It is highly efficient versatile surfactant suitable for use separately as detergent in acidic environments. As intermediate it is usually neutralized with various bases to produce sulfonates that are used in numerous industries, most commonly in the production of liquid and powder detergents, household and I&I cleaners, laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, car wash products, hard surface cleaners etc. Besides these s applied in various industrial applications such as agriculture, emulsion polymerization, oil field chemicals etc. Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid is an anionic surfactant with molecules characterized by a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic group. They are nonvolatile compounds produced by sulfonation. Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid is an anionic surfactant with molecules characterized by a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic group. They are nonvolatile compounds produced by sulfonation. Linear alkyl benzene sulfonic acid are complex mixtures of homologues of different alkyl chain lengths (C10 to C13 or C14) and phenyl positional isomers of 2 to 5-phenyl in proportions dictated by the starting materials and reaction conditions, each containing an aromatic ring sulfonated at the para position and attached to a linear alkyl chain at any position with the exception of terminal one (1-phenyl). Uses: High action of detergency, moistening, foaming, emulsion. Widely applied in a variety of detergents and emulsifiers, such as washing powder, daily-use chemical detergent, utensils detergents and textile industry of the cleaning agent, dye, electroplating industry, leather industry, degreasing agents and paper industry’s de-coloring agent. Household detergents including laundry powders, laundry liquids, dishwashing liquids and other household cleaners. • It is used in anionic specialty formulations • In other industries such as textile industries, it is used as an mercerising or washing agent • It is used to increase the surface area of distempers • As main active matter in all forms of Detergents like Cake, Powder and Liquid formulations • As emulsifier and wetting agent in small quantity with other surfactants in Toilet soaps for foaming • In Pesticides to improve the quality of spray Market Outlook Rapidly growing dish washing liquid demand across the globe, particularly due to positive growth indicators in the food & beverage industry is another factor boosting the global linear alkylbenzene sulfonate market size in the recent years. As dish washing liquid is essentially required in the food & beverage sector. Linear alkylbenzenes sulfonate (LAS) belongs to the family of organic compounds. Linear alkylbenzenes sulfonate is generally produced from sulfonation reaction of linear alkylbenzene (LAB). The characteristic properties of linear alkylbenzenes sulfonate mainly depends upon the purity of linear alkylbenzene and sulfonation technology used for LAS production. Changing lifestyle and shifting preference towards the environmental-friendly products have led to significant rise in the demand for linear alkylbenzene sulfonate-based personal care products and detergents. Increasing demand for detergents and cleaners in order to maintain hygiene standard has resulted into increase in demand for linear alkylbenzene sulfonate. Furthermore, industrial norms pertaining to the hygiene standard in the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, healthcare, chemicals and many other industries have led to increase in demand for detergents for industrial cleaning application, which subsequently results into increase in demand for the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate market. Moreover, rising consumer spending, improved lifestyle and increasing demand for personal care products across the globe help to increase the demand for linear alkylbenzene sulfonate. Apart from this, availability of alternative synthetic chemicals and pricing advantage over the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate-based products may hamper the growth of the market. The global linear alkylbenzene sulfonate is mainly dominated by the Asia Pacific (APAC) region and is expected to boost the demand for linear alkylbenzene sulfonate over the forecast period, owing to increasing population coupled with growing lifestyle, increasing per capita expenditure and increasing demand for personal care products. Rapid urbanization, industrial growth and changing consumer preference towards environmental-friendly surfactant & detergents help to drive the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate market in APAC and is expected to register significant growth over the forecast period. LABSA industry has low technology barrier and is labor intensive industry. Currently, there are many producing companies in the world LABSA industry. The main market players are Ho Tung, CEPSA, Sasol, KAPACHIM, Stepan, New India Detergents, ISU Chemical and Nanjing Gige. The production of LABSA increased to 3211.81 MT in 2016 from 2756.30 MT in 2012 with average growth rate of 3.90%. Global LABSA capacity utilization rate remained at around 73% in 2016 The major players in global Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid market include: • CEPSA • Sasol • KAPACHIM • Stepan • SK • Fogla Group • New India Detergents • ISU Chemical • Solvay • Dada Surfactants • Huntsman • Kao • Tufail • Hansa Group • Miwon Chemical • NCSP • FUCC • Lion • Ho Tung • Nanjing Gige About 82–87% of LAS is used in household detergents, including laundry powders, laundry liquids, dishwashing liquids, and other household cleaners. Industrial, institutional, and commercial cleaners account for most of the other applications, but LAS is also used as an emulsifier (e.g., for agricultural herbicides and in emulsion polymerization) and as a wetting agent. Very small volumes are also used in personal care applications. Demand in the North American household segment fell sharply in 2000–11, as a result of several developments, including reformulations away from LAS to alternative surfactants because of cost considerations, the greater use of enzymes, and adverse economic conditions that resulted in lower overall surfactant levels in detergents.
