India possesses one of the largest power generation capacities in the world (its current ranking is fifth) with an installed capacity of 156,000 MW which is about 4 percent of global power generation. The top four countries, viz., US, Japan, China and Russia together consume about 49 percent of the total power generated globally. The average per capita consumption of electricity in India is estimated to be 704kWh during 2008-09. The power sector has emerged as major focus area for the government both central and state. However, it suffers from power shortages estimated at 14-15 per cent, with the figure higher in the northern and western regions.  

India's generation capacity of 2,300 MW in 1950 expanded to over 116,500 MW including non-utilities at the end 2000-01. The total installed capacity of electric power generation further increased to 141,080 MW in 2007-08 (upto January 2008) compared to a capacity of 128,000 MW during the same period in 2006-07. The Eleventh Plan has targeted a capacity addition of 78,570 MW. The five years (2007-2012) may be the best of times for power equipment makers with the power sector on an expansion spree. With order-book growth expanding over the last three years, there is a good chance that this will continue. Close to 82% of the planned generation capacity for the Tenth Plan was either implemented or was in the process of being implemented. Even assuming a 70% implementation ratio for the Eleventh Plan, close to 55,000 MW will be added. Five ultra mega power projects, totaling 20,000 MW are coming up in 2008. In the transmission sector, for example, Power Grid Corporation is planning a capex of Rs 710 billion by 2010.

Earlier, the shortfalls in achieving the Plan targets of addition to power generation and up-gradation of transmission and distribution had adversely affected the electrical equipment industry. The peak shortage which was over 11% of the requirement in 2003-04 increased to 11.7% in 2004-05 and to over 12% in 2005-06. The shortage further rose to about 14% in 2006-07. In the ten months of 2007-08 the peak shortage had risen to over 15% of the peak demand of 107,010 MW.

The national grid envisage 200,000 MW transmission capacity and 37,700 MW of inter-regional power transfer capacity (current inter-regional power transfer capacity is 20,750 MW) to ensure smooth transfer of power from power –surplus to power-deficit regions.

According to the Power Ministry, the power sector has tied up Rs 2,240 billion worth of investments to build power plants with 70,000 MW capacities in the next three years. The Indian government has set ambitious goals in the 11th plan for power sector owing to which the power sector is poised for significant expansion. In order to provide availability of over 1000 units of per capita electricity by year 2012, it has been estimated that need-based capacity addition of more than 100,000 MW would be required. This has resulted in massive addition plans being proposed in the sub-sectors of Generation Transmission and Distribution. Investment is also expected to flow into different segments of the value chain, covering the segments of power generation, transmission and distribution and allied sectors such as equipment, technology and services. The private sector is expected to play a more active role in investment and capital productivity. The government has undertaken a number of initiatives to facilitate private sector participation.

With some fast moves at launching fast track projects to augment supplies, the Indian industry needs to improve its competitiveness. The Indian market is growing and multinationals with newer technologies are now more active.

Advances in solar cell technology, conversion efficiency and system installation have allowed photovoltaic system (PV) to achieve cost structures that are competitive with other peaking power sources. PV has the unique advantage among renewable resources of being able to produce power anywhere: deserts, cities or suburbs. Though the installation cost of PV is more, but it can be selectively deployed on the grid wherever and whenever needed to reduce distribution capacity constraints and transmission congestion while producing pollution-free power. Both capital costs and operating and maintenance costs are driven by the choice of technology and the area of the solar system. The time is right for the world to adopt the clean and renewable energy source as the major electricity producer. With most part of India enjoying close to 300 sunny days a year, even if 0.5% of land area is brought under solar power, it can meet the entire energy requirement of India in 2030. The Indian government has announced its Solar Mission under the National Action Plan on Climate Change in November 2009 with the goal to generate 1,000 MW of solar power by 2013 and 20,000 MW by 2020. World solar photovoltaic (PV) market installations reached a record high of 7.3 GW in 2009, representing growth of 20% over the previous year, according to the annual PV market report issued by Solarbuzz. The PV industry generated $38.5 billion in global revenues in 2009, while successfully rising over US$13.5 billion in equity and debt, up 8% on the prior year. Indian Government has taken several steps, both on the supply side and the demand side, to offer key incentives to aid the development of solar PV industry. Currently India has 10-12 solar PV cells manufacturers producing about 100 MW of solar PV cells and about 20 manufacturers engaged in module manufacturing with installed capacity of 120 MW. Moreover, currently India has more than 200 manufacturers of solar water heaters and 40 solar cooker manufacturers, and also 5-6 manufacturers are involved in producing solar drying, cooking, process heat, and air conditioning applications. India already is witnessing a huge surge in applications for solar power, varying from street lighting to water heating. Decentralized Distributed Generation (DDG) for meeting rural demand, back-up power for telecommunications, roof based captive systems for individual industries and grid interactive solar power plants are some prominent sectors offering significant market potential for solar PV in India. Since the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission due to combustion of natural gas is substantially less as compared to combustion of coal, lignite or naphtha thus helps in reducing GHG emission. Indian economy is highly dependent on Coal as fuel to generate energy and for production processes. Thermal Power Plants are the major consumers of Coal in India, and yet the basic power needs of a large section of society are not being met. This results in excessive demands for electricity and places immense stress on the environment. Changing coal consumption patterns will require a multi pronged strategy focusing on demand, reducing wastage of energy and the optimum use of Clean Energy Sources like Natural Gas. A gas based power plant has excellent environmental benefits in terms of reduction in carbon emissions and coal resource conservation. Also, gas based power plants would not lead to production of huge quantities of solid waste (like ash in thermal power plants) and hence reduces the burden of solid waste disposal. Energy demand is fast increasing with rapid industrialization and urbanization in India. In a developing economy like India, generally energy demand is increasing at much faster pace than supply. Increasing demand also leads to increase in cost of energy, hence high power tariffs for consumers. Increasing price of petroleum crude and other fossil fuels, world over and in India in the last two decades, has forced us to look for cheaper, renewable sources of energy. Use of bio-mass generated from Agriculture and Agro-process industries are the prime and readily available sources of renewable energy. Cogeneration based on Rankine Cycle is not new to the sugar industry. The term power generation in the engineering sense implies the production of mechanical or electrical power from some other source of energy e.g., thermal hydroelectric or electrochemical energy. India is the second largest producer of Sugar cane in world after Brazil. Indian Sugar mills both in the private and co-operative or joint sector have accepted the importance of implementing high efficiency grid connected cogeneration power plant for generating exportable surplus. In fact, additional revenue stream by sale of exportable power to State Electricity Boards (or third party customers), has become the only way for achieving long term sustainability, given the fiercely competitive domestic and international sugar markets. Sugarcane Bagasse is an ideal renewable source of energy and is readily available from Sugar mills. Conventional means of power generation have used air, steam or water as a working medium for internal combustion engines reciprocating steam engines and steam and hydraulic turbines. Newer techniques such as magnetohydrodyamics, fuel-cell wind and solar power are under investigation and may eventually prove important. Per capita power consumption is a barometer of country's prosperity, economic growth and industrialization. Major portion of the additional power requirement will have to be met through thermal generation. Co-generation power plant (Power Plant) based on bagasse makes use of generation of power from bagasse as fuel. Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of process heat and electric power using single fuel. Biomass fuel can also be used in cogeneration plants for enhancing their efficiency. Biomass combustion facilities that produce electricity from steam-driven-turbine generators have a conversion efficiency of nearly 17 to 25 percent. Using a boiler to produce both heat and electricity (cogeneration) improves over all system efficiency to as much as 85 percent. That is, cogeneration converts 85 percent of the fuel’s potential energy into useful energy in two forms; electricity and steam heat. Cogeneration facilities increase economic viability and profitability of an industry. Cogeneration projects based on agro waste, like rice husk, bagasse etc. as fuel result is lowering the cost of energy generation, low capital investment, higher profitability of plant due to substantial reduction in cost of production and enhanced productivity and less consumption of costly and scarce fuels like diesel oil. The installed power generation of the country stood at 167,077.36MW during FY2010-2011. The Indian government has set ambitious goals in the 11th plan for power sector owing to which the power sector is poised for significant expansion. In order to provide availability of over 1000 units of per capita electricity by year 2012, it is estimated that, need-based capacity addition of more than 100,000 MW would be required. Power Generation is an essential requirement of economic growth of a country. A weak power infrastructure does not lead to the growth potential and pulls. The National Electricity Policy envisages "Power for all by 2012" and the per capita availability of power to be increased to over 1,000 units by 2011-12 from current level of about 644 units. To attain this, a total capacity addition of about 100,000MW was projected during 10th and 11th plan period. To meet the energy generation requirement of 1,029MU and a peak load of 152,746MW, with diversity and 5% spinning reserve, an additional capacity of 83,000MW is required during 11th plan. Meeting the additional requirement of 83,000MW would entail taking advantage of all economically viable sources of energy and working out a suitable strategy of energy mix with a view to gain the optimum advantage. India's current installed capacity (142,195MW) constitutes as under; 64% of thermal, 25% of hydro, 8% of renewable 3% of nuclear fuel. Coal is expected to be the mainstay of power generation in the years to come. Thermal projects with total capacity of 46,635MW of coal-based and 1,375MW lignite-based capacity have been identified for capacity addition during 11th plan. Transformer is a machine that transfers electrical energy from one electrical circuit to another without changing frequency by the principle of electromagnetic induction. Since its basic construction requires no moving parts so it is often called the static transformer and it is very rugged machine requiring the minimum amount of repair and maintenance. Power Transformer

A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors—the transformer's coils. A varying current in the first or primary winding creates a varying magnetic flux in the transformer's core and thus a varying magnetic field through the secondary winding.
