Waste management and recycling: Project Opportunities in Punjab

PROFILE:

Rapid industrialization last few decades have led to the depletion of pollution of precious natural resources in India depletes and pollutes resources continuously. Further the rapid industrial developments have, also, led to the generation of huge quantities of hazardous wastes, which have further aggravated the environmental problems in the country by depleting and polluting natural resources. Therefore, rational and sustainable utilization of natural resources and its protection from toxic releases is vital for sustainable socio-economic development.

Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

In Punjab, growth of population, industrialization and urbanization has resulted in generation of large volumes of solid waste. The total amount of collected solid waste from the districts includes 1108012.25 MT of municipal waste and 6695.57 MT of bio-medical waste (PPCB as cited in Statistical Abstract of Punjab, 2007). The factors contributing to the generation of solid waste are:

•      The state has registered 45% increase in its population during the last decades.

•      The state is the 7th most urbanized state in the country with urban population increasing to 33.95% against a national average of 27.8%.

•      The state has two (Ludhiana & Amritsar) cities with more than 1 million population.

•        The state supports a large number of floating populations from other states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

•      Most of the solid waste is presently disposed of on land and remains uncovered resulting in environmental pollution of surrounding area.

•        The change in life style towards consumes and discard culture is responsible for adding to municipal solid waste and changing waste composition. It also adds pressure on the existing municipal solid waste handling infrastructure, as well as, disposal sites.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management- Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Tyre Retreading Business

Tyre Retreading Business. Retread Tire. Start an Automobile Tyre Retreading Industry Retreading tires is the process of restoring old tires so that they can be used in automobiles. The process is technology-driven where the worn-out and damaged threads are replaced with new treads. Tyre retreading can be done using 2 methods – cold process and hot process. Currently in India retreading is done 50% by the organized sector and the remaining 50% by the unorganized sector. Tyre Retreading is a new technology. After applying this method the old tyres become serviceable and usable. The part of the tyre that comes in contact with the surface of the road is known as the tread. The tread is an integral part of the tyre and is responsible for providing traction. New treads are available in the market. In brief, in can be put on an old tyre and cured with the help of steam. Similar to the new tyres, the treated tyres can be very well used on all vehicles, irrespective of light or heavy vehicles. With a safe and new technology, which is being adopted nowadays, it will be more easy and economical to produce tyres. Recently a new technology has been developed called “Precured Tread Rubber Retreading Process” which is commonly known as “Cold Process Retreading”. As in most parts of the world, tyre retreading in India is done extensively for commercial vehicles such as trucks and busses. The primary reason for retreading tyres is to save operational costs as applying a new tread can be done at less than half the cost of a new tyre. With further growth of the economy, there will be an increased numbers of vehicles in transport as well as passenger vehicles and hence more tyres will be required. Hence, there is a very wide scope for retread tyres as an original replacement. May it be taxis or trucks, school buses or military vehicles, retreading is being used in all of them. • Retreading is highly environment friendly. When the existing tyres are made ready for further use, the manufactures save landfill space. Also, it reduces carbon dioxide emmission and saves millions of gallons of oil which is required to manufacture new tyres. • There are many economic benefits of retreading as the retreaded tyres are less pricey in comparision with the new ones. This definitely helps to save a considerable amount of money. • Retread process is not responsible for spreading large chunks of rubber on the roads and highways. It happens due to abuses like tyre failure, caused by road hazards, tyre blasts and overloading to both new tyres and retread ones. • They cost almost 30 – 50 % less than the price of a new tire. • It is a low-cost production process – for making the new tires 80% natural rubber is used whereas for retreading only 25% of natural rubber is consumed. • Properly retreaded tires have almost the same life as the new tires. • The investment is comparatively less. The major part of the investment is involved in buying expensive machinery and molds • Retreading extends the life of used tires thus making the entire process of tire making recyclable. Market Outlook Retreading tires is the process of restoring old tires so that they can be used in automobiles. Biodiesel Production from Algae

Biodiesel Production from Algae. Algae Fuel Manufacturing Business. Investment Opportunities in Biofuel Manufacturing Industry Algae are photosynthetic organisms that live under water. Biodiesel production from algae has the potential of considerably larger amounts of fuel in terms of growth area. The amount of agricultural land needed is reduced to 5%. Biodiesel is used in diesel engines, and is thus different from the waste and vegetable oils used to fuel converted diesel engines. Blends of biodiesel are also used as heating oil in space heating applications. Biodiesel is oil from plants or animals used as an alternative to or blended with petroleum diesel in automobiles and industrial fleets with diesel engines. Easy to Use One of the great advantages of biodiesel is that it can be used in existing engines, vehicles and infrastructure with practically no changes. Biodiesel can be pumped, stored and burned just like petroleum diesel fuel, and can be used pure, or in blends with petroleum diesel fuel in any proportion. Power and fuel economy using biodiesel is practically identical to petroleum diesel fuel, and year round operation can be achieved by blending with diesel fuel. Blending and Switching with Diesel Fuel Biodiesel can be used 100% (B100) or in blends with petroleum diesel fuel. When biodiesel is first used in a vehicle, it may release fuel tank deposits which can lead to fuel filter plugging. After this initial period, a user can switch between biodiesel and petroleum diesel whenever needed or desired, without modification. Biodiesel as a transportation fuel Most of the trucks, buses, and tractors in the United States use diesel fuel. Diesel fuel is a nonrenewable fuel made from petroleum. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that is made from vegetable oils, grease, and animal fats. Using biodiesel fuel produces less pollution than using petroleum diesel fuel. Any vehicle that operates on diesel fuel can use biodiesel. Advantages of Biodiesel as Fuel • 75% cleaner than conventional diesel fuel. • Reduces unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter in exhaust fumes. • Contains no sulphur. • Emissions are nearly 50% less than conventional diesel fuel. • Doesn’t cause eye irritation • More biodegradable than sugar and less toxic than table salt. • Fuel economy is the same as conventional diesel fuel. • Much better lubricant than conventional diesel fuel and extends engine life • High cetane rating, which improves engine performance. • 1% biodiesel will increase lubricity by 65% • Biodiesel can be produced from any fat or vegetable oil, including waste cooking oil. Market Outlook The global biodiesel market is expected to reach USD 54.8 billion by 2025. The regulations regarding the formulation of fuel in these regions are expected to increase the share of biodiesel, thereby increasing the demand. The global biodiesel market is slated for a huge growth in the next few years, not only because of the growing environmental concerns, but also because of the surging prices for non-renewable sources of energy, such as petroleum. Governments are enhancing the use of biodiesel across the globe and many countries have initiated merging of conventional diesel with a percentage of biodiesel. In biodiesel market by verticals, biodiesel is used as a fuel in many verticals including automobile, marine, railway, and agriculture industries, in pure form B100' or by forming blends with conventional petroleum diesel. These blends are B2', B5' and B20', which include 2%, 5%, and 20% biodiesel, respectively. Biodiesel has a higher lubricity (50:1) than that of traditional petroleum diesel. This belonging of biodiesel encourages its use in the vehicle enterprise as it reduces wear and tear of the engine. The excessive cetane value of biodiesel additionally maximizes engine life by way of ensuring entire gasoline combustion and leaving no residue. Biodiesel is used in the marine industry also as it is a good material as a shipping fuel, being biodegradable, non-toxic and essentially free of sulphur and aromatics. The biodiesel market has been segmented based on the feedstock used for products such as vegetable oils, animal fats, biomass, and others (brown grease/ trap grease); and verticals such as automotive, aviation, industrial, marine, residential & commercial heating, power generation, and agriculture. Biodiesel contains no petroleum products, but it is compatible with conventional diesel and can be blended in any proportion with mineral diesel to create a stable biodiesel mix. Biodiesel is eco-friendly, non-toxic and basically free from sulfur; it is renewable and can be produced from plant resources and agriculture. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel, which has a correlation with sustainable development, environmental preservation, energy conservation, efficiency and management. Growth in food industry driving the production of feed stock made from residue of soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil and animal fats enabling the handiness of feed stock required for production of biodiesel which in turn is fueling the production of biodiesel over the forecast period. Moreover, favorable regulatory support for mandatorily blending of biodiesel in diesel fuel is projected to fuel the consumption of biodiesel. However, raw material availability and high cost of installation of biodiesel production plant are factors expected to hamper the growth of biodiesel market during the forecast period. Some of the major competitors of the global biodiesel market are Poet, Llc, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Flint Hills Resources LP, The Andersons, Inc., Raizen, Copersucar, and Abengoa. Other developing economies like Europe, China, Russia, and India are also experiencing steady development and are expected to show an increase in stability in near future. Emerging Biofuel Market in India Bio-diesel production is in rise day-by-day basis in India as well as foreign countries. The major reason behind the phenomena is the limited amount of petroleum product reservoirs. The Indian biofuel market has been consistently witnessing growth and developments for past few years. The Government of India is injecting huge amount of money and resources into the development of this sector in an attempt to reduce dependency on imported oil. High volatile oil prices and production levels have further enlightened the need for continuous developments of this sector. The Indian biofuel sector is expected to see robust growth in coming years.
