Waste management: Project Opportunities in Maharashtra

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

There are 250 urban local bodies (ULBs) in Maharashtra which comprises 23 Municipal Corporations, 220 Municipal Councils, 3 Cantonment Boards and 4 Nagar Pachayats. Per capita MSW generation in various towns of the state ranges 100 to 600 gram per day.  For class I cities in Maharashtra, the waste generation rates are in the range of 14 to 63 kg per capita per day, which includes Mumbai having the highest range of 0.63 kg per capita per day (pcpd). The average waste generation rate for the state is estimated as 35 kg pcpd.  As per the projection, the waste quantities are estimated to increase from 6.18 million tons per year in the year 2004 to 8.05 million tons per year in 2011 and 11.77 million tons per year in 2021. In total over 21632.3 tons per day (TPD) of MSW is generated of which around 50% is generated in Mumbai (8500 TPD), Thane (680 TPD), Pune (1740 TPD) and Kalyan (1050 TPD). Compare to other Metropolitan cities in India, MSW generation is highest in Mumbai.  Available data indicates that Waste generated in Maharashtra contains about 55% of Non-biodegradable and 45% biodegradable components.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Calcium Palmitate (Used as Cattle Feed)

Calcium palmitate or magnesium palmitate are formed when calcium or magnesium ions (present in hard water) react with the palmitate anion (sodium palmitate is the main constituent of soaps) to form insoluble calcium palmitate or magnesium palmitate. This insoluble precipitate accumulates in pipelines thereby resulting in the formation of biofilms as bacterial cells use these salts as a carbon source for their growth. Calcium palmitate and magnesium palmitate are also constituents of gallstones. This could lead to the growth of microorganisms and subsequently result in the formation of biofilm. This causes drug resistant infections in humans. The global Palmitic acid market can be segmented on the basis of regions, contents and applications. On account of regions, the global Palmitic acid market can be segmented into Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa and Latin America. On account of contents, the global Palmitic acid market can be segmented into Capacity and Production Volumes, Raw Materials, Manufacturers, Consumption Structure, Export and Import, Consumers etc. Considering applications, the global Palmitic acid market can be segmented into release agents, hydrogenation Palmitic acid, schizophrenia treatment etc. The extensive use of soaps and detergents are the key factors driving the growth of the global Palmitic acid market. The increasing demands from the end use industries like personal care, surfactants, soaps, detergents, food additives and others are playing a major role in fuelling the growth of the global Palmitic acid market. Moreover, growth in end-user industries is predicted to outpour the global Palmitic acid market. Further, increasing cleansing methods adopted by various industries is sweeping up the growth of global Palmitic acid market.

Captive Thermal Power Plant for Glass Industry

A captive power plant also called auto producer or embedded generation is a power generation facility used and managed by an industrial or commercial energy user for their own energy consumption. Captive power plants can operate off-grid or they can be connected to the electric grid to exchange excess generation. A captive power plant is a facility that is dedicated to providing a localised source of power to an energy user. These are typically industrial facilities or large offices. The plants may operate in grid parallel mode with the ability to export surplus power to the local electricity distribution network. Alternatively they may have the ability to operate in island mode; i.e. independently of the local electricity distribution system. Benefits • Security of power supply through self-generation • Reduced costs through high fuel efficiency, particularly when in CHP configuration • Improved environmental performance resulting from fuel efficiency Though the power generation industry is well established in most countries, limitations of providing good-quality power, round the clock to the industrial users, force industries to establish captive power plants. Generally, factories are established near the sourcing point of raw materials or mines; not always there is a power plant in the vicinity. If the distance is more then, the cost of transmission has to be borne by the user, along with added expenses due to the technical loss during transmission. Global captive power generation market is expected to grow due to the mushrooming power demand in emerging markets of China, India, and Middle East along with the presence of cross subsidized charge to the per unit power generation cost. Increasing population, industrialization, and urbanization is expected to augment captive power generation market growth. The advantages of captive power generation include reduced distribution and transmission losses, and higher thermal efficiency. Increasing demand for uninterrupted and reliable power is expected to have a positive impact on captive power generation market over the next seven years. These factors have made the captive power plant a popular choice for the industry developers. Since the industrial sector is one of the largest power consuming markets, this sector is likely to contribute to the growth of the captive power generation market over the next five years. Moreover, it is expected to hold a dominating market position during 2018-2023.

Animals raised organically are also not given antibiotics or hormones. Global organic food market is projected to register a CAGR of over 16% during 2015 – 2020. Growth in the market can be attributed to growing health concerns among consumers and increasing awareness with regard to health benefits of organic food. Other factors driving organic food sales across the globe include increasing income levels, improving standard of living, and government initiatives aimed at encouraging widespread adoption of organic products. Consumers across the globe are becoming increasingly health conscious, which has resulted in a change in their tastes and preferences. A growing number of consumers are moving towards consumption of organic food in place of conventional food, to avoid adverse health effects caused by chemical preservatives or genetically modified ingredients present in inorganic food.
