Waste management: Project Opportunities in Kerala

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

The Greater Kochi Area (GKA) ranks 24 (with CEPI score of 75.08) amongst the critically polluted areas (CPA) in the country. The State Pollution Control Board was instructed by the CPCB to evolve a time bound action plan for improving the environmental quality in the CPA. It was stated that external resource persons/institutions identified by CPCB/MoEF would be made available for this purpose. Such external guidance is still anticipitated. Meanwhile the Kerala Board, in consultation with the stakeholders in GKA, has chalked out an action plan for Greater Kochi Area. The main pollution sources of concern are industries, municipal solid waste, biomedical waste, E-waste and domestic waste.  The action plan hence includes mainly proposals for up gradation of existing pollution control facilities in the critically polluted area, common facilities such as CETPs, CTSDF, STPs, common biomedical waste management facility, municipal solid waste management, e-waste management and sewage management.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Production of Insulators (HT & LT)

An electrical insulator is a material whose internal electric charges do not flow freely; very little electric current will flow through it under the influence of an electric field. This contrasts with other materials, semiconductors and conductors, which conduct electric current more easily. The property that distinguishes an insulator is its resistivity; insulators have higher resistivity than semiconductors or conductors. Insulators are used in electrical equipment to support and separate electrical conductors without allowing current through themselves. An insulating material used in bulk to wrap electrical cables or other equipment is called insulation. The term insulator is also used more specifically to refer to insulating supports used to attach electric power distribution or transmission lines to utility poles and transmission towers. They support the weight of the suspended wires without allowing the current to flow through the tower to ground. Few Indian Major Players are as under: • Aditya Birla Insulators • Spark Insulators Pvt Ltd • Prime Insulators Pvt. Ltd • Cji Porcelain Pvt Ltd • Shreeji Power & Insulators Pvt. Ltd Market Outlook World is experiencing a tremendous expansion of industrial and real estate sectors and accompanied by a massive increase in the need for electric power energy due to the essential role of the electric power in the development and growth in all areas of life. This huge demand of the electrical power bodes market demand for large investments in the field of electric power and its support services industry. Global demand for insulation is expected to rise 3.7 percent per year to 26.0 billion square meters of R-1 value in 2020. Developing countries are expected to account for the majority of insulation demand gains, with rising building construction activity and industrial output driving growth. Electric insulators are essential components of transmission and distribution (T&D) lines. They play a crucial role in preventing the flow of electric current down to the earth through supporting points between the transmission line and tower. There are three types of electric insulators based on the materials used for their production — ceramic, glass, and composite. The global electric insulator market to grow at a CAGR of 6.23% during the period 2016-2020. Global electrical insulation materials market is expected to witness a steady growth over the coming year from 2017 to 2026 as the demand for electrical insulation materials is expected to be driven primarily by the growth in demand from construction industry. Manufacturing Business of Medical Disposables

Manufacturing Business of Medical Disposables. IV Cannula. Cannula Manufacturing System The IV cannula itself is a small flexible tube that surrounds a trocar needle used to puncture the skin. The cannula has a fitting that can be connected to more tubing or a port for medication administration once the needle has been removed. Aside from aiding in hydration and administering medication, a cannula can also be used to obtain blood samples for testing. Intravenous (IV) cannulation is a technique in which a cannula is placed inside a vein to provide venous access. Venous access allows sampling of blood, as well as administration of fluids, medications, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, and blood products. A cannula is a tube that can be inserted into the body, often for the delivery or removal of fluid or for the gathering of data. In simple terms, a cannula can surround the inner or outer surfaces of a trocar needle thus extending the effective needle length by at least half the length of the original needle. It is also called an intravenous IV cannula. Its size mainly ranges from 14 to 24 gauge. Different-sized cannula have different colours as coded. ‘Cannula’ and ‘catheter’ both mean exactly the same thing– a flexible tube inserted into the body to administer or withdraw fluids or to keep another tube patent. Intravenous cannulation is a technique in which a cannula is placed inside a vein to provide venous access. Venous access allows sampling of blood as well as administration of fluids, medications, parental nutrition, chemotherapy, and blood products. In general, the smallest gauge of catheter should be selected for the prescribed therapy to prevent damage to the vessel intima and ensure adequate blood flow around the catheter, which reduces the risk of phlebitis. In an emergency situation or when patients are expected to require large volumes infused over a short period of time, the largest gauge and shortest catheter that is likely to fit the chosen vein should be used. There are four types of IV Catheter: Peripheral Catheter, Midline Peripheral Catheter, and Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter & Central Venous Catheter. Uses and Applications A venous cannula is inserted into a vein, primarily for the administration of intravenous fluids, obtaining blood samples and administering medicines. An arterial cannula is inserted into an artery, commonly the radial artery, and is used during major operations and in critical care areas to measure beat-to-beat blood pressure and to draw repeated blood samples. IV Cannula has veterinary use, nasal or oral use too. Cannula can also be used for piercing. The common uses are rapid transfusion of blood, transfusion of IV drugs. Paediatric patients or adults with small veins undergoing long term medication or blood transfusion are subjected to IV Cannula. It is also used on oncology patients undergoing Chemotherapy. Few Indian Major Players are as under:- • La Medical Devices Ltd. • Lifeline Injects Ltd. • Sangam Health Care Products Ltd. • Span Medicals Ltd. • Surgiplast Ltd. Market Outlook The Indian market for peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) is split up into 2 segments: conventional PIVC and safety PIVC. PIVCs are inserted in veins and arteries. An arterial access site is utilized in patients that require blood pressure monitoring. Firmer catheters are preferred for arterial access. A venous access site is utilized for infusing fluids, providing antibiotic treatment and other standard procedures. In 2016, safety PIVCs represented 12% of the total market for PIVCs, with the remaining balance represented by conventional PIVCs. Growth in the unit sales of advanced materials PIVCs is expected to drive gains in the share of safety PIVCs over the forecast period. The global peripheral I.V. catheter market was valued at $3,702.2 million in 2015, and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.0% during the period 2016 - 2022. The global market is increasing, due to growing geriatric population and increasing incidence of chronic diseases. In addition, the growing demand for injectable drugs in comparison to the oral medications, increasing healthcare expenditure and technological advancements in peripheral I.V. catheter is encouraging the growth of the global peripheral I.V. catheter market. Women's Lingerie-Ladies Undergarments (Bra & Panties)

Hosiery industry is an ancient industry in the field of textile industry having very good potential in domestic market and also in the export market. There is increasing market demand for hosiery undergarments for its various advantages. Cotton undergarments are widely used by all classes of people because of its good absorbency, cheaper prices and ready availability. These foundation garments are used by the people throughout the year under different climatic conditions. It is presumed that there will be no problem in marketing of knitted undergarments of good quality. Ladies innerwear (Bra and panties) is the highest growing apparel item across all income groups and exclusive boutiques have popped up in all places. Nothing cramps the style faster than ill-fitting and uncomfortable undergarments. Thus, innerwear are not only made attractive, but also comfortable and practical. Top stylists unchain their creativity by inventing fabulous new forms and materials which make ladies innerwear even more sexy, eccentric and wild, without leaving out elegance. There has been an increase in demand for innovative, comfort-oriented undergarments and lately, many women are forgoing those fussy lingerie designs for simple, uncomplicated ladies undergarments. In addition to keeping outer garments from soiling, ladies innerwear are worn for a variety of reasons: warmth, comfort and hygiene being the most common. Market Outlook The Innerwear Category is one of the high growth categories in the apparel market and promises growth and innovation. The higher income, along with higher discretionary spending, growing fashion orientation of consumers and product innovations by the innerwear market have turned innerwear from a traditionally utilitarian item to an essential fashion requirement. The current size of the Indian innerwear market is Rs. 15,870 crores ($2.9 billion). The category is also growing at an impressive CAGR of 12 per cent and is expected to reach Rs. 27,900 crores ($5.1 billion) by 2017. The womens innerwear market, which is driven by value-added innerwear products, contributes around 60 per cent to the market. The women’s innerwear market worth Rs. 9,540 crores ($1.7 billion) is one of the fastest growing categories within women’s apparel. This category is growing at a CAGR of 14 per cent, and is expected to reach Rs. 18,380 crores ($3.4 billion) by 2017. The lingerie market in India can be classified into super-premium, premium, mid-market and economy and mass market segments. A major share of the lingerie market is held by the mid-market and economy segments, in terms of both value and volume. The super-premium and premium segments are relatively smaller, but fast-growing segments. In the present scenario, the premium and super premium segments of the lingerie industry are advancing following a consumer shift from economy and mid-market segment to the premium segment. 90% of lingerie in India are sold in mom and pop stores where the experience is very poor because of no trial room, no female staff, stocking capacity is very low, no guidance on size etc. Here, interestingly selling lingerie online is not difficult because the product is seen as utility product in India. According to a research report, in volume terms, the women’s lingerie segment holds a 52 per cent share of the total innerwear market in India. In value terms, the women’s lingerie segment holds a 66 per cent share of the total innerwear market, thereby enjoying a higher Average Selling Price (ASP) as compared to the men’s innerwear market. India's lingerie market is currently valued at $3 billion. A mere 1% of it is online. In the next few years the market value is projected to jump to $5 billion. While physical stores obviously ring in the bulk of the sales, the unavailability of sizes, lack of privacy and shortage of trained personnel has paved the way for online lingerie portals. Mahua Alcoholic Beverage Production

Mahua Alcoholic Beverage Production. Country Liquor Processing Business. Mahua longifolia is an Indian tropical tree found largely in the central and north Indian plains and forests. It is commonly known as mahua, mahwa or Iluppai. Mahua is a common tree in deciduous forests of India, quite prominent in states of Andhra Pardesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh., Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Mahua flowers are in dense fascicles near end of the branches having 1.5 cm long fleshy cream coloured corolla tube and are scented. Flowering period of Mahua is from the month of March to May. It is cultivated in warm and humid regions for its oleaginous seeds (producing between 20 and 200 kg of seeds annually per tree, depending on maturity), flowers and wood. The fat (solid at ambient temperature) is used for the care of the skin, to manufacture soap or detergents, and as a vegetable butter. It can also be used as a fuel oil. The seed cakes obtained after extraction of oil constitute very good fertilizer. The flowers are used to produce an alcoholic drink in tropical India. This drink is also known to affect the animals. Several parts of the tree, including the bark, are used for their medicinal properties. It is considered holy by many tribal communities because of its usefulness As for liquor, mahua is a sacred drink for adivasis, and one of the world's best when distilled properly. Mahua flowers are rich in sugar (68-72%), in addition to a number of minerals and one of the most important raw materials for alcohol fermentation. The present investigation was for the development of a non-distilled alcoholic beverage from Mahua flowers. Mahua (Madhuca indica) has been used for liquor production, for centuries, by the tribals. However, wine from mahua flower is not common. Fermentation conditions were standardized for mahua wine preparation. Wine made from different mahua germplasm showed no significant difference in terms of biochemical and sensory quality. The liquor produced from the flowers is largely colourless, with a whitish tinge and not very strong. The taste is reminiscent of sake with a distinctive smell of mahua flowers. It is inexpensive and the production is largely done in home stills. Uses of Mahua The Mahua tree is a very important source of food for the Gonds and other tribes in Central and Western India. They are also used for making alcohol, vinegar, syrups and jams. Mahua oil is largely used in the manufacture of soaps, besides cooking. Mahua flowers and seeds have healing Power and Curative Properties, used in Bronchitis, Rheumatism, Diabetes, Piles, Arthritis, Problem of Breast Milk Secretion, Bleeding Gums, Tonsillitis, Eczema, and Skin Disorders. Mahua flowers are also considered good for cooling, and are used as a tonic and demulcent. However an estimated 90 per cent of the production goes into brewing beverages. In traditional medicine, the flowers are used for a variety of purposes. An extract of the flowers is used for heart disease and to treat excessive vaginal discharge. This is also believed to be good for the eyes, TB, asthma, blood diseases, thirst and burning sensations. The flowers are also believed to be aphrodisiacs and to increase the quantity (but not necessarily the quality) of sperm. Grease & Lube Oil Blending Plant

Grease & Lube Oil Blending Plant. Lubricants & Greases Manufacturing Business. Lube Oil Blending and Filling Plant. Lubrication is simply the use of a material to improve the smoothness if movement of one surface over another; the material which is used in this way is called a lubricant. Lubricants are usually liquids or semi-liquids, but may be solids or gases or any combination of solids, liquids, and gases. Lubricant is a substance which is used to control (more often to reduce) friction and wear of the surfaces in a contact of the bodies in relative motion. Depending on its nature, lubricants are also used to eliminate heat and wear debris, supply additives into the contact, transmit power, protect, seal. A lubricant can be in liquid (oil, water, etc.), solid (graphite, graphene, and molybdenum disulfide), gaseous (air) or even semisolid (grease) forms. Most of the lubricants contain additives (5-30%) to improve their performance. Lubricating oil creates a separating film between surfaces of adjacent moving parts to minimize direct contact between them, decreasing heat caused by friction and reducing wear. Lubricating oils are specially formulated oils that reduce friction between moving parts and help maintain mechanical parts. Lubricating oil is a thick fatty oil used to make the parts of a machine move smoothly. Lubricating oil, sometimes simply called lubricant/lube, is a class of oils used to reduce the friction, heat, and wear between mechanical components that are in contact with each other. Lubricating oil is used in motorized vehicles, where it is known specifically as motor oil and transmission fluid. Applications of Lubricants: Lubricants are primarily used to reduce friction stress between surfaces. They have the following uses: • As antiwear, antioxidants, and antifoaming agents. • As demulsifying and emulsifying agents. • As rust and corrosion inhibitors. • In machinery as engine oils, compressor oils, gear oils, and piston oils. • As hydraulic, brake, and gear box fluids. • Used in the soap and paint industries. • Some specific uses of certain variants of lubricants are: • Synthetic lubricants are used in turbines, vacuum pumps, and semiconductor devices. • Molybdenum is used as a paint pigment and as a catalyst. • Liquid lubricants are used in medicines. Lubricants are also used as cutting fluids in many industries. Oil, water, and oil emulsion are used as cutting fluids. These liquids are used to cool as well as to lubricate surfaces. Emulsions of oil in water are most widely used as cutting fluids. Lubricants are also used as cutting fluids in cutting, grinding, trading, and drilling of the metals. Cutting fluids are used in machining operations where friction is very high because of close contact between the work piece and the tool. This high friction generates a large amount of local heat and the tool is overheated and may even lose its temper and hardness. As a result, liquids, such as lubricating oils, water, or water emulsions are used on working parts of the machines. The use of lubricating oils in vehicles is vital to their operation. When an engine is properly lubricated, it needs to put less work into moving pistons as the pistons glide easily. In the long run, this means that the car is able to operate while using less fuel and run at a lower temperature. Overall, the proper use of lubricating oil in a car improves efficiency and reduces the amount of wear and tear on moving engine parts. Grease A grease is best thought of as a sponge full of oil, with the sponge being the “base“ or thickener. It holds the oil and additives in place and gives the grease the basic characteristics such as drop point and water resistance. The oil content, typically 80-90% of the grease, provides most of the lubrication performance. To achieve the desired characteristics of a grease, careful selection of base lubricating oil viscosity, base type additives and fillers is essential. When Are Greases Used Greases are generally used in place of oil in the following situations: • The manufacturer specifies a grease and a lubricant is not required for cooling. • Where the grease acts as a seal to prevent entry of contaminants or loss of lubricant. • Soft grease can be used in place of oils in gearboxes with worn or ineffective seal or where oils would be thrown off the bearing surfaces or leak past seals. • Lubrication points can only be reached during maintenance shutdowns. • It is important to maintain lubricant in the bearing area during periods of prolonged shutdowns or frequent stop-start operations (oil drains away when a machine is stopped but a grease does not). • Where noise reduction is important. • To decrease the frequency of lubrication. • In worn bearings previously lubricated by oil to reduce noise and extend useful life. • Resists leakage, dripping or undesirable throw off. • The main advantage of grease over a fluid are its potentially longer life convenience and ease of application. Market Outlook The main role of a lubricant is to reduce friction between metal surfaces, leading to reduction of heat generation and ultimately to the protection of the parts. Lubricants play an important role in a variety of automotive, commercial and industrial applications such as automotive, manufacturing, power generation and marine. Automotive vehicles require engine oils, transmission fluids, brake fluids and greases. A total of 64,585 KL of lubricants, worth of LKR 26.11 billion were sold during the year 2016, up 11.4 % compared to the total sales (quantity) of the year 2015. Lubricant consumption in India stood at around 2.9 million MT during 2013-14, registering a healthy growth rate of 7.6% during 2008-13; the market was valued at around INR 260 billion. Automotive lubricants account for around 47% of the lubricant usage in India; industrial lubes and process oils together account for the rest. Currently, USA is the largest consumer of lubricant oil across the world. China and India comes at second and third position respectively. The consumption pattern In Indian lubricant oil industry is similar to world lube industry. Majority of lubricant is being consumed by automobile sector (55%), rest is being used for Industrial purpose and marine industry. Industrial lubricants are majorly used in the core industrial sectors such as spamming cement, coal, steel, engineering, sugar, marine, defense, railways, power, surface transport, fertilizer and others. The business is driven by growth in infrastructure investments, manufacturing, mining sector and increased manufacturing exports. In this segment demand for high performance lubricants are driven by applications such as compressors, textile machinery windmills, captive power plants and others. One of the essentials in lubricant science is world-class technology. Lubricant technology is driven by the changing needs of the customers and stakeholders. As the global lubricants market volume expected to grow from an estimated 38,635.3 KT in 2014 to 42,780.7 KT by 2019, with a CAGR of 2.4 per cent between 2014 and 2019, India is set to put its foots into the path of economic growth as well. Automotive is the largest and fastest-growing end-use industry for grease. The passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles are driving the demand for high performance grease in the automotive industry. In the automotive industry, grease is extensively used in various auto parts such as wheel bearings, universal joints, suspensions, gears, switches, and connectors because of their excellent properties such as mechanical stability, temperature tolerance, water resistance, and anti-oxidants. The need for high performance grease is rising in the increasing manufacturing of machines and equipment for end-use industries. Industrial greases market trails the GDP due to their widespread application in manufacturing of goods and automotive maintenance operations. Due to the surge in manufacturing in Asia Pacific, the industrial greases market in the region is estimated to witness growth, expanding at a CAGR of 6.3% between 2015 and 2021 in terms of revenue. With the anticipated increase in manufacturing in China in the coming years, the demand for industrial greases in the country is expected to rise between 2015 and 2021. With the rising operating time of machines and greater speed of operations, the need for industrial greases is expected to increase by 2021.
