Bamboo is widely used for paper manufacturing, as it is similar to straw in micro social characteristics and conditions for digestion. Waste paper collected from office buildings, large retail outlets, and apartment buildings is pulped and pulverized in water. About 80 % of available waste paper pulp is used in the manufacture of paper boards. Small-scale units depend entirely on waste paper as raw material. It has very good potential for an entrepreneur.

The paper industry should move away from a dependency on an industry that is highly regulated and drastically fluctuates with changes in other industries. Alternative fibers also increase employment in the agriculture industry, while protecting forests which are a more fragile eco-system. Non-wood fibers are often more sustainable, bamboo for example uses less water and pesticides.Bamboo fibers that are too short may not hold up in the paper making process, but bamboo fibers that are too long may not respond to traditional paper processing. With the right bamboo commercial farmers will have very little costs associated with retrofitting machinery.
