Industrial Explosives are high hazard blasting explosives primarily used in the mining, quarrying and construction industry. India, a potential market for industrial explosives and its accessories, has witnessed a radical shift from complete import dependence in the past decades to self sufficiency with an exportable surplus presently.
The Indian industrial explosives industry encompassed the activities related to the manufacturing and selling of industrial explosives in gun powder, bulk, cartridge and ANFO based explosives segments of the nitrate mixture, nitro compound including PETN and boosters and explosive accessories such as detonators, detonating fuse and safety fuse. The industry covers a wide range of explosives, such as gunpowder, nitrate mixtures, nitro compounds, site mixed slurries and boosters nitroglycerine-based explosives and booster PETN (penta erthritol tetra nitrate) explosives. The possession, sale and transport of nitroglycerin-based explosives has been banned since April 2004. To use these explosives, devices like safety fuses, detonating fuses and detonators are needed and constitute an integral part of the industry.
The Indian explosives market is driven by increased spending and activity in the Indian infrastructure segment. The Indian market of civil explosives is pegged at around 0.7 million tonnes worth Rs 2,750 crore, annually. This accounts for around 5 per cent of the global civil explosive consumption and the local market is growing around 6-7 per cent annually.
India is the world's eighth-largest explosive manufacturer and has over two dozen players in the business.
