Industrial Chemicals

Tuesday, November 4, 2014

A chemical substance is a form of matter that has constant chemical composition and characteristic properties. It cannot be separated into components by physical separation methods, i.e. without breaking chemical bonds. Chemical substances are often called 'pure' to set them apart from mixtures. A common example of a chemical substance is pure water; it has the same properties and the same ratio of hydrogen to oxygen whether it is isolated from a river or made in a laboratory. Chemicals are used to make a wide variety of consumer goods, as well as thousands inputs to agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and service industries. Chemical substances exist as solids, liquids, gases or plasma, and may change between these phases of matter with changes in temperature or pressure. Chemical reactions convert one chemical substance into another. The chemical industry comprises the companies that produce industrial chemicals. Chemical industries produce chemicals from various products like chemical from milk, fats, coal, oranges, wood etc. and utilized in many industries like dye, textile, fertilizers etc. The Indian Chemicals Industry comprises both small and large-scale units. The fiscal concessions granted to small sector in mid-eighties led to establishment of large number of units in the Small Scale Industries (SSI) sector. The Indian chemical industry is among the established traditional sectors of the country, playing an integral role in the country’s economic development. This sector, forming part of the basic goods industry, is a critical input for industrial and agricultural development.

Chemicals developed or manufactured for use in industrial operations or research by industry, government, or academia. These chemicals are not primarily for the specific purpose of producing human casualties or rendering equipment, facilities, or areas dangerous for human use.

Acetophenone is the organic compound with the formula C6H5C (O) CH3. It is the simplest aromatic ketone. This colorless, viscous liquid is a precursor to useful resins and fragrances. Acetophenone is used in perfumery as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, detergents, creams, lotions, and perfumes; as a flavoring agent in foods etc. The chemical formula for acetophenone is C8H8O, and its molecular weight is 120.15 g/mol. (2, 6).

Anthracene is a solid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon of formula C14H10, consisting of three fused benzene rings. It is a component of coal tar. Anthracene is converted mainly to anthroquinone, a precursor to dyes.

The global chemical industry, estimated at US$ 2.4 trillion, is one of the fastest growing sectors of the manufacturing industry. The chemical industry itself consumes 26 percent of its own output. Chemical industry is one of the oldest industries in India.  As per industry reports the pharmaceutical segment contributes approximately 26% of the total industry output and approx. 35-40% is dominated by the petrochemical segment. The US consumes approximately one-fifth of the global chemical consumption whereas Europe is the largest consumer with approx. half the consumption.

Chemical Industry is an important constituent of the Indian economy. Its size is estimated at around US$ 35 billion approx., which is equivalent to about 3% of India's GDP.
