Ayurvedic medicine (also called Ayurveda) is one of the world’s oldest medical systems. It originated in India and has evolved there over thousands of years. It is a holistic healing science. Ayurvedic practice involves the use of medications that typically contain herbs, metals, minerals, or other materials. [h1]A Clinical Study of Chyavanaprash produced by Ayurveda Rasashala[/h1]


[p]Chyavanaprash is commonly taken by Indian people as a general tonic and an appetiser.[/p]

[p]The term 'Chyavanaprash' is taken from the name of the sage 'Chyavana'. After losing his youthful vigor, Chyavana Rishi was given a sticky sweet paste like substance by Ashwinikumars and Chyavana Rishi had got a miraculous reversal of age and his youthful vigor. Thus the substance became known as 'Chyavanaprash'.[/p]

[p]It is given to children as well as elderly people for strong and healthy life. The process of aging is common to all living beings. Various symptoms are seen during aging from loss of hair to loss of memory.[/p]

[p]All these signs appears because catabolic rate is more than anabolic rate. The catabolic process can be accelerated by improper intake of food, drink and erratic life styles, mental stresses, and physical strains, etc. And this can be slowed by proper life style and food.[/p]

[p]Ayurveda is not only concerned with proper intake of food but also proper digestion and absorption. So that all 7 dhatus are able to nourish the body properly, and this will happen only when 'Agni' (Entity for proper digestion) is functioning well. The lack of digestion 'Agni-mandya' will lead to various disorders thus provoking disfunction of the body mechanism which in turn will accelerate the catabolic process.[/p]

[p]As Ayurveda is keen about proper digestion and absorption it is also related with elimination of waste products. So that not to produce toxins and provoking all kinds of diseases.[/p]

[p]For proper cleansing Ayurveda recommends 'Pancha-Karma' and it is recommended that in past panchakarma stage 'Chyavanaprash' is highly useful to be taken orally as Rasaya to build up the proper digestive ability.[/p]

[p]There are 3 major References of Chyanvanaprash-Ashtanga Haridaya-Charak Samhita - Sharangadhar Samhita - Vogaratnakar Samhita.[/p]

[p]Chyavanaprash is made with about 35-50 herbal ingredients processed by boiling, frying in ghee, pounding, mixing, etc. resulting in a thick paste like dark brown Sweet-Sour substance which is taken orally.[/p]

[p]It is equally recommended for children as well as adults as an excellent tonic and as an anti-aging agent.[/p]

[h3](Chyavanaprash is an Avaleha kalpana)[/h3]

[p]All the above ingredients were taken and a decoction was made. A decoction and sugar were boiled till 'Pak-Siddhi' was done. All the ingredients and prakshepa - Dravyas were added to pak and kept for cooling. Loha Bhasma is also added to the Chyavanaprash.[/p]


[p]Nine patients were chosen to given Chyavanaprash and were classified in 3 categories:[/p]

[li] Skin related diseases.[/li]
[li] Chronic fatigue syndrome[/li]
[li] Asthma & respiratory disorders.[/li]

[p]All the patients divided in above categories were observed by giving an ayurvedic treatment with chyavanaprash for certain period.[/p]

[p]At the end of this period it is observed that all patients were relieved of their complaints. Chyavanaprash is not the only cause of their improvement.[/p]


[p]All the patients selected were divided in 3 categories.
Skin related diseases are concerned with Rakta Dhatu. All the patients in this group showed marked increase in haemoglobin % with increase in weight.[/p]

[p]Mansa Dhatu can't be built properly if Rakta Dhatu is disturbed.Chyavanaprash appeared to be an excellent drug for the people suffering from general debility, irritability etc.[/p]

[p]Third group selected for the study is Asthma and respiratory disorders. These patients under observations for 6 months showed marked improvement relieving their signs and symptoms.[/p]

[p]All the patients were given an ayurvedic treatment and panchakarma (whatever is necessary) with the aid of Chyavanaprash with Loha Bhasma.[/p]


[p]Three different groups of diseases were selected and Chyavanaprash and an ayurvedic treatment were given to them. All the patients were well benefitted with the given treatment. So it should not be concluded that Chyavanaprash with Loha bhasma is not the only cause for improvement, but CPL definately contributes to the improvement of the patient such as increases in Hb%, increase in weight etc.[/p]

[h1]A Clinical assessment of effect of Sookshma Triphala in Lipoma[/h1]


[p]Lipoma is a fatty benign Tumour. Majority patients of Lipoma try to avoid surgical intervention for cure. Surgical aspect to cure is as follows:-[/p]

[p]Benign tumours are as a rule excised with or without surrounding healthy tissue as the case may be. In adults this is done under local anaesthesia. In case of children general anaesthesia may be required as it is very difficult to control them under local anaesthesia.[/p]


[p]This circumscribed tumour of the adipose tissue is excised as a rule. This tumour has got a capsule which helps in its removal. The skin and subcutaneous tissue up to the tumour are incised along the line of the natural crease. The capsule of the tumour has got fibrous prolongations upto the skin. These are incised and made the capsule free from the surrounding tissue. Then the tumour is very easily shelled out. The dead space is now packed with gauze and kept for a few minutes. The gauze is then removed, the oozing vessels are electrocoagulated and the dead space is obliterated with the needle and catgut. If the tumour is very large a rubber sheet drain may be used. The skin is closed as usual.[/p]

[p]There are cases who responded well to the Sookshma Triphala when it was used for some other skin problems. This observation inspired for this project.[/p]

[h3]Action of Triphala:[/h3]

[p]Triphala, the basic constituent of this drug is useful in kapha and Pitta disorders. Kajjali enhances the action of Triphala.
This compound is useful in skin diseases and as a blood purifier. It is used as a primary antibiotic and safely be prescribed during or after withdrawal of broad spectrum antibiotics for prevention of re-infections.[/p]

[p]With warm astrigent action is alleviates 'Kapha Dosha'. Thus relieves inflammatory conditions by preventing pus formation, it is successfully used in viral infections, long lasting fevers and as a drug of choice in Acne vulgaris.[/p]


[li]Patients were selected on random basis at out patient department irrespective of age, sex, cast, occupation during period of five years.[/li]
[li]2 Tablets of Sookshma Triphala of Ayurveda Rasashals, pune India were administered to each patient, Anupana was water.[/li]
[li]No dietory restriction was advised to the patients.[/li]
[li]Regular visits of the patient were organised & findings were recorded.[/li]

[li]Lipoma is normally cured by surgical intervention.[/li]
[li]Here attempt is made to manage conservatively.[/li]
[li]A boy aged 12 years responded completely to the treatment within 21 days. Prior to the treatment surgeon advised excision. Patient and his parents decided to avoid operation due to poverty. Parents were more happy.[/li]
[li]Solitory Lipoma responded well to the treatment.[/li]
[li]Two or three Lipomas responded to good degree. Showed increase in softness and slow reduction in size and shape.[/li]
[li]Multiple Lipomata showed poor progress.[/li]
[li]Male patients were three times more than female patients.[/li]
[li]Age group from 21 to 30, 31 to 30 and 31 to 50 were having nearly equal number of patients.[/li]
[li]Service group patients were having more incidence of Lipoma. [/li]
[li]Prakruti having Pitta & Kapha predominance & found 65% occurance of Lipomata.[/li]
[li]Response to treatment by 60% of patients was moderate only. Indicates that they needed long-term treatment.[/li]
[li]It is found that forearm is the common site (75%) of appearance of Lipoma. No explanation can be given about this incidence.[/li]
[li]Patients were uneasy with site of lipoma & they were after conservative treatment instead of surgical correction.[/li]
[li]Sookshma Tripala helped to correct Dhatwagni to some extent. Life style of the patients is responsible for disturbance in the functions of Agni.[/li]
[li]This study needs multi disciplinary analysis in a separate project.[/li]


[p]Sookshma Triphala is moderately useful in correcting problem of lipoma conservatively. Probably needs higher doses & long-term treatment with proper diet and exercise.[/p]
