Industrialization is the process of social and economic change that transforms a human group from a pre-industrial society into an industrial one. It is a part of a wider modernization process, where social change and economic development are closely related with technological innovation, particularly with the development of large scale energy and metallurgy production. As urbanization expands and cities grow the need to deal with the environmental impact becomes even more important to ensure sustainable development. This also entails handling increasing volumes of waste water. Efficient wastewater management exploiting the capacity optimally requires a thorough understanding of the pollutions sources origin and substance. Hence pollution sources must be mapped and identified.

According to this, 53% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, with the range of urban population varying from 32% in India to 85% in Brazil. In India, the proportion of urban population has increased from 25.7% in 1991 to 27.8% in 2001 and finally to 32% in 2013.
