Curcumin is a component of the Indian spice turmeric (Curcumin longa), a type of ginger. Curcumin is one of three curcuminoids present in turmeric, the other two being desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin. These curcuminoids give turmeric its yellow color and curcumin is used as a yellow food colorant and food additive.
Curcumin is obtained from the dried rhizome of the turmeric plant, which is a perennial herb that is cultivated extensively in south and Southeast Asia. The rhizome or the root is processed to form turmeric which contains 2% to 5% curcumin.
Curcumin is the main biologically active photochemical compound of Turmeric. Turmeric is a spice derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, which is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Rhizomes are horizontal underground stems that send out shoots as well as roots. The bright yellow color of turmeric comes mainly from fat-soluble, polyphenolic pigments known as curcuminoid.

India is one of the largest producer and exporter of spice oleoresins.
India controls 60% of the 13,500-tonne global spice oleoresins market even as China has emerged as a strong contender in paprika oleoresin, the most in-demand spice oil.
The Indian spice oleoresin market is about Rs.600 crores. India accounts for 70% of the world oleoresin production with competition from China, US, Lanka, South Africa and Latin America. Brazil, China and India are the market leaders. Kochi in Kerala with its spice farms is the hub of oleoresin manufacturing.
Curcumin production is highly dependent on turmeric production which is regional dominated by India. India is the largest manufacturer of curcumin with production exceeding 80% of global market.
Curcumin Market size is expected to reach USD 99.3 million by 2024.
Global curcumin market is expected to witness high growth on account of its increasing demand in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Curcumin is extracted from turmeric (curcuma longa) and is used in the abovementioned end-use industries for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation properties. Rising consumer awareness regarding health benefits of the product is expected to play an important role in driving market growth over the forecast period.
Based on application, global curcumin market is segmented into pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics and others which include cyanide detection and dye. Among these, pharmaceuticals accounted for larger share of the global curcumin market is expected to rise during the forecast period. Growing demand for curcumin in the pharmaceutical industry has boosted market growth of global curcumin market. The beneficial properties of curcumin such as anti-cancer and anti-viral has made its useful in manufacturing wide range of medicines and herbal supplements. Therefore, pharmaceutical industry is anticipated to generate high demand for curcumin in the near future. Food accounted as the second largest application segment of curcumin.
