The food processing industry is valued at US$258 billion, and is the fifth largest industry domestically in terms of production, consumption, export, and expected growth in the country. It contributes to around 14 percent of manufacturing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 13 percent of India’s total food exports.

The food industry, which is currently valued at US$ 39.71 billion, is expected to grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11 % to US$ 65.4 billion by 2018. The Indian food and grocery market is the world's sixth largest, with retail contributing 70% of the sales. The Indian food retail market is expected to reach Rs 61 lakh crores (US$ 915 billion) by 2020.The Indian food processing industry accounts for 32% of the country's total food market, one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth. It contributes around 14% of manufacturing Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 13% of India's exports and 6% of total industrial investment. Indian food service industry is expected to reach US$ 78 billion by 2018.
