A4 paper is the size most used in the world. It is used as the classic paper sheet in all industrialized countries. In India, the segment growth of cut size has been around 18-20% per year. Beyond that the economy-value for money segment is growing @ 25%plus.

On the basis of product type, the printing papers market is divided into coated mechanical, uncoated mechanical, coated free-sheet and uncoated free-sheet. Among the product segment, only uncoated mechanical has shown growth. Demand for printing papers in emerging markets is expected to experience robust growth over the next five to ten years. Consumption of printing paper will continue to advance as export-led economic development strategies give way to more domestic-driven growth. Finally, the developing world will benefit from those who have gone before them and can be expected to be early adopters of proven technologies such as digital printing, on-demand, color (where affordable) and software-driven document solutions.

The paper industry in India has become more promising as the domestic demand is on the rise. Increasing population and literacy rate, growth in GDP, improvement in manufacturing sector and lifestyle of individuals are expected to account for the growth in the paper industry of India. Paper Industry plays a vital role in the economic growth of a country through revenue generation, foreign exchange earnings, and employment generation. India is the fastest growing market for paper globally. In sync with economic growth, paper consumption is poised for a big leap forward. The sector has touched 14.88 million tonnes of capacity in 2015-16. The estimated turnover of the industry is Rs 50,000 crore approximately and its contribution to the exchequer is around Rs 4,500 crore. The industry provides employment to more than 0.5 million people directly and 1.5 million people indirectly. The paper industry also contributes towards fulfillment of various requirements of the industry as a whole like information dissemination, publicity etc. which in turn stimulate industrial growth of the country. The paper industry has, thus, a catalytic role to play not only for the overall growth of the industry but also for the living standards of the people.

Despite the continued focus on digitization, India’s demand for paper is expected to rise 53 per cent by 2020, primarily due to a sustained increase in the number of school-going children in rural areas. Digital media has a lot of ground to cover, at least as far as penetration is concerned, primarily in rural areas. Paper is an established business and its consumption is being encouraged.
