Carbon fibre is an important and strategic raw material for the fabrication of advanced composite materials. Carbon fibre polymer matrix composites are being extensively used as light weight structural materials in a large number of applications. In India the use of carbon fibre composites has a history of nearly two decades. The composites technology has reach a mature level and is comparable to the best in the world.

Carbon fibers or carbon fibres (alternatively CF, graphite fiber or graphite fibre) are fibers about 5–10 micrometres in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. To produce a carbon fiber, the carbon atoms are bonded together in crystals that are more or less aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber as the crystal alignment gives the fiber high strength-to-volume ratio (making it strong for its size). Several thousand carbon fibers are bundled together to form a tow, which may be used by itself or woven into a fabric.

The properties of carbon fibers, such as high stiffness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion, make them very popular in aerospace, civil engineering, military, and motorsports, along with other competition sports. Carbon fibers are usually combined with other materials to form a composite. When combined with a plastic resin and wound or molded it forms carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (often referred to as carbon fiber) which has a very high strength-to-weight ratio, and is extremely rigid although somewhat brittle. However, carbon fibers are also composited with other materials, such as with graphite to form carbon-carbon composites, which have a very high heat tolerance.

In the long term, the composites industry is considered extremely viable with more than 5,000 composites applications worldwide with great growth potential. The composites industry in India is characterized by a large number of players in end-use applications. The industry registered brisk growth in the last few years driven by the increased demand for carbon fiber and carbon fiber composites, technology advances and increased penetration of market players.

The future of the India carbon fiber market is expected to be favorable on account of increasing application of carbon fiber in newer product segments such as deep water drilling platforms, drill pipes, semi-conductor materials, rising number of buildings and apartments in the country owing to the rising urban population and rising GDP of India.

Once led by aerospace and space applications in India, carbon fiber composites are increasingly being used in a host of new industrial applications where material cost is secondary to performance, high strength and reduced weight considerations. Indian carbon fiber composites market is poised for dramatic growth and expected to reach US$53 mln by 2018. The industrial market is expected to witness very strong growth, followed by aerospace segment. One of the important sectors substantiating the demand for composites is the renewable energy production, in particular, wind energy generation which is to satisfy the global goal of reducing fossil fuel dependency.
