Wood and Wood Products, Plywood, Board, Particle Board, Wooden Furniture, Bamboo, Engineered wood, Forest product, Lumber, Tree, Wood drying, Wood plastic composite, Door, Window, Modular Furniture, Timber, Woodworking, Decorative Laminated Sheets

Wood and wood based products are an important part of our day to day life. In India, three main types of wood based panels viz., plywood including blockboards and flushdoors, fibreboards and particleboards are manufactured. Wood products include: cases, boxes, hard wood flooring, joinery, wood casks, treated rough wood, pre-fabricated wooden buildings, wood carvings, door frames and other niche items. Most wood in India is used for the manufacture of doors, window frames, wall panels, moldings and furniture. Domestic manufacturing is highly fragmented and unorganized with much of the production, particularly for doors, windows and interiors still done by individual carpenters on site. The appreciation of the need for rational utilization of wood as a raw material has resulted in the increased consumption of these products everywhere.

The share of American woods in the Indian import market is relatively small, but has grown from 0.4 percent to almost 1 percent ($12.8 million). India’s supplies of domestic wood are very limited. Because of this shortage, the import market for raw and semi-processed wood is expected to increase with demand and construction activity over the next few years.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010 will also support growth of the housing and construction sectors in India. Imports constitute 20 percent of total annual consumption of wood in India, while plantations and forestry contribute 58 and 22 percent respectively.

Logs account for the largest portion (67 percent) of all wood and wood products imported into India due to relatively lower import tariffs and a local preference for unprocessed wood. Imports of logs have increased by 72 percent to $1.14 billion. India imports logs mostly from Malaysia, Myanmar, Ghana and New Zealand due to a freight advantage and relatively lower prices.

The furniture market is the second largest wood processing segment after logs, making India a fast emerging market for high-end, value-added imported products.

The manufacture of pre-fabricated doors and windows is relatively new and the current market is growing at 10% per annum. The total annual market for furniture in India is estimated to be US$ 1.25 billion about 90% of which is for wooden products. The branded (higher quality) wooden furniture industry is growing at 15% annually.

Imports of fiber and particle board, veneer and sawn lumber have also increased over the last decade, indicating positive demand in the housing, construction, household products, furniture and packaging sectors.

Panel and plywood products are main wood products in India. Product categories include veneer sheets, particle board (composite wood core with plastic laminate finish), panel products (fiber board), plywood made from both hard and softwood (veneered panels and laminated woods), and medium density fiber board. Indian particle board and plywood industry have large producers who accounts for 15% of the total production, producing some 30 million sqm of plywood and blockboards. The Indian market for particle board and plywood is estimated in value terms, at over Rs 17billion. Of the total market, particle board accounts for over 30% of the market with the rest over 70% accounted by plywood segments. Western India has emerged as the leader in the particle board segment. A relatively new product in the industry is medium density fibre board (MDF board). Two large companies are major players in this field, one by the Birla group, Mangalam Timber and another by Nuchem Plastics.

In the Plywood segment, Greenply Industries with a market share of 4.1% leads the pack and is closely followed by Century Plywood (3.4%),Kitply Industries(3.2%) and Worthy Plywood(2.3%).Other important players in the segment, though with a very small market share, include Sarda Plywood Industries(1.8%) and Uniply Industries(1.4%).

As in many emerging markets, India is experiencing a rapid phase of urbanization with a change in lifestyles, a growing demand for engineered wood panel products, and a high infrastructure, industry sources expect positive growth for wood productssuch as plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard, oriented-strand board and laminated veneer lumber in near future.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)- Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into woodfibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.MDF is generally denser than plywood. It is made up of separated fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It is stronger and much denser than particle board. It can be finished to a smooth surface and grain printed, eliminating the need for veneers and laminates. Most of the thicker MDF panels (1.27 to 1.91 centimeters [cm]) (1/2 to 3/4 inch [in.]) are used as core material in furniture panels. Medium density fiberboard panels thinner than 1.27 cm (1/2 in.) typically are used for siding. MDF does not contain knots or rings, making it more uniform than natural woods during cutting and in service. However, MDF is not entirely isotropic, since the fibres are pressed tightly together through the sheet. Typical MDF has a hard, flat, smooth surface that makes it ideal for veneering, as there is no underlying grain to telegraph through the thin veneer as with plywood. A so-called "Premium" MDF is available that features more uniform density throughout the thickness of the panel. MDF may be glued, doweled or laminated. Typical fasteners are T-nuts and pan-head machine screws. Smooth-shank nails do not hold well, and neither do fine-pitch screws, especially in the edge. Special screws are available with a coarse thread pitch, but sheet-metal screws also work well. Like natural wood, MDF may split when woodscrews are installed without pilot holes. Indian particle board and plywood industry dates back to the First World War. It has come a long way having grown nearly six-fold since its inception. The large producers account for 15% of the total production, producing some 38 mnsqm of plywood and block boards. There are several SSI units and other informal sector units contributing around 60% of the total production. The Indian market for particle board and plywood is estimated in value terms, at over Rs. 37 bn. Of the total market, particle board including medium density fibreboard (MDF board) accounts for nearly a quarter of the market. Nearly 85% of the particle board is supplied by the organized sector. Western India has emerged as the leader in the particle board segment. India organized furniture industry is estimated at around USD 8 bn and expected to grow at a CAGR of over 25% annually. Wood Pellets From Sawdust

In general, any biomass is suitable as raw material for pelletizing. Currently woody biomass is the predominant raw material for fuel pellet production. The main constituents of wood are the elements carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). Other important elements are nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), magnesium (Mg), chlorine (Cl) and potassium (K) which are present in varying amounts. The density of logged wood is between 400-750 kg/m3. The ash content is around 1% or less but is strongly dependent on bark and needle portion as well as the level of secondary contamination like adhering soil. Pelletizing of hardwood is more difficult and requires the adaption of the pelletizing process. Thus, softwood is most commonly used with spruce, fir and pine being the most common woody raw materials. Wood has been used for heating and fuel purposes for thousands of years. The wood industry has found itself on the verge of a revolution, however, because of the rapid increase in development and utilization of new wood-based solid and liquid fuels. Wood pellets represent an alternative to the use of coal, gas and even traditional wood logs and chips. Pellets in the U.S. are sold in bags by retailers, adding about $20 per ton in packing, Pellets and wrapping material. With an average price of $276 per ton as of November, pellets can be found for as low as $176 per ton, or as high as $600 per ton in the Northern U.S. approximately 35 new facilities, in addition to the previously existent 15 plants, have started operations. With an average capacity of 66,000 tons per year, and several new facilities planned for 2018 and 2019. As a whole there is a good scope for new entrepreneur to invest in this business.

Sawdust is a kind of by-product from cutting, grinding, drilling, sanding or pulverizing wood with a saw or other tools. Traditionally it is used for making particleboard to make furniture or wood pulp to produce paper; also can be served as mulch, alternative to clay cat litter. The most significant role of sawdust is played as fuel by processed into pellets. It is an emerging and promising career to make wood pellets from sawdust. Nowadays, hundreds of countries all over the world have built their factories of making wood pellets from sawdust. Usages of Sawdust Pellets: • As a matter of fact, sawdust pellet made from waste wood is a good kind of fuel to replace traditional fossil fuels like coal, gas, petrol, etc. It can be used for burning in a stove to cook at home; • Heat the house, school, hotel, or greenhouse, farm; • Industrial scale sawdust pellets production can be used in thermal power plants to replace coal. • Used as cat litter to replace clay; • Also can be used as horse bedding, or beddings for cow, chicken, dogs, and other animals. • Other usages waiting to be discovered. Steps of Sawdust Pellets Making Process: ? Get the raw material ready. Generally sawdust is small enough for pellet making. So the first step is to add water to the sawdust till its moisture content is between 8-15%, which is the best moisture content for pelletizing. But if the raw material is wood chips, they should be pulverized first. ? Put the sawdust into the pellet machine gradually. Large scale pellet production need a screw feeder to make sure stable feeding of raw material. ? After pelletized, the sawdust pellets are of high temperature that is not suitable for direct packing. So they should be cooled by pellet cooler. ? Then, pellets go through a vibrating sieve, where good pellets will be left, while broken ones or powder will be collected for reproduction. ? After all the above procedures, pellets can be packed with a pellet packing machine.
