Production of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)

Production of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2). Highly Profitable Chemical Business Ideas Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined from the earth, processed and refined, and added to a variety of foods, as well as other consumer products. White in color, it is used to enhance the color and sheen of certain foods and is also key for food safety applications. In its natural state it exists in different bulk crystalline forms, such as anatase and rutile, but during processing it is ground into a very fine powder. It is naturally opaque and bright, which makes it useful for use in paper, ceramics, rubber, textiles, paints and cosmetics. It is also UV-resistant, and is used widely in sunscreens and pigments that are likely to be exposed to light. It is used in a wide variety of personal care products, including color cosmetics such as eye shadow and blush, loose and pressed powders and in sunscreens. Uses & Benefits: The main use of titanium dioxide (TiO2) is as a white powder pigment because of its brightness and very high refractive index. This means that relatively low levels of the pigment are required to achieve a white opaque coating. Pure titanium dioxide is a fine, white powder that provides a bright, white pigment. Titanium dioxide has been used for a century in a range of industrial and consumer products, including paints, coatings, adhesives, paper, plastics and rubber, printing inks, coated fabrics and textiles, as well as ceramics, floor coverings, roofing materials, cosmetics, toothpaste, soap, water treatment agents, pharmaceuticals, food colorants, automotive products, sunscreen and catalysts. Titanium dioxide is produced in two main forms. The primary form, comprising over 98 percent of total production, is pigment grade titanium dioxide. The pigmentary form makes use of titanium dioxide’s excellent light-scattering properties in applications that require white opacity and brightness. The other form in which titanium dioxide is produced is as an ultrafine (nanomaterial) product. This form is selected when different properties, such as transparency and maximum ultraviolet light absorption, are required, such as in cosmetic sunscreens. In the pharmaceutical industry, titanium dioxide is used in most sunscreens to block UVA and UVB rays, similar to zinc oxide. It is also commonly used as pigment for pharmaceutical products such as gelatin capsules, tablet coatings and syrups. In the cosmetics industry, it is used in toothpaste, lipsticks, creams, ointments and powders. It can be used as an opacifier to make pigments opaque. Titanium dioxide is seeing growing demand in photocatalysts due to its oxidative and hydrolysis properties. As a photocatalyst, it can improve the efficiency of electrolytically splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, and it can produce electricity in nanoparticle form. Applications include light-emitting diodes, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and electrodes for plasma displays. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is derived from ilmenite a mineral found in the metamorphic, plutonic igneous rocks and beach sands in India. It can be classified into anatase, rutile and brokite, of which only anatase and rutile are commercially important. TiO2 is consumed across paints, plastics, paper and many other end use segments. The titanium Di-oxide market in India is projected to exhibit a CAGR of 3.98% during 2016-2025, owing to broad growing applications of titanium Di-oxide in paints, rubbers, plastics, textiles, cosmetics, pare & printings, etc. Titanium is the ninth most commonly found element in the earth's crust and is chemically inert in nature. Titanium Di-oxide is an oxide of titanium metal, which occurs naturally in several types of mineral sands and rocks. Minerals, metals and chemicals manufacturing industries majorly produce titanium Di-oxide in two grades namely, Rutile Grade and Anatase Grade titanium Di-oxide, owing toit's high refractive index, hiding power & opacity, low specific gravity and UV protecting properties. Thereby, boosting consumption of titanium Di-oxideacross various downstream industries such as paints, paper, rubber, textiles cosmetics etc. Furthermore, increasing awareness among consumers regarding the physical and chemical properties of titanium Di-oxide is further projected to drive India titanium Di-oxide market in the coming years. "Paints and varnishes manufacturing industry is the leading consumer of titanium dioxide in India. Paints is one of the mostly used building materials in constructions, furniture, automotive and other industries. Strong growth in construction and automotive industries in India is the major factor propeling demand for titanium dioxide pigments in paints and coatings production industry. Over the past few years, India paint market grew at a rate of around 15% and is expected to grow at the same pace in the coming years as well. The global titanium dioxide (TiO2) market size was valued at USD 13.3 billion in 2015. The market is expected to witness growth at a CAGR of over 8.9% from 2016 to 2025, owing to increasing demand from end-user industries. Usage of the product as pigments in paints & coatings formulation is expected to fuel industry growth over the next few years. The major growth drivers for this market are growing demand for titanium dioxide in end use industries like coatings, plastics and others. Technological innovations aimed at improving manufacturing processes to increase product yield with higher quality is expected to have a positive impact on the titanium dioxide pigment market. Within the global titanium dioxide market, the coatings segment is expected to remain the largest market. Increasing demand for architectural and industrial coatings in the developing countries of Asia Pacific, particularly China and India, has presented sound opportunities for titanium dioxide in the coatings industry, which would spur growth for this segment over the forecast period. Based on grade type, the global titanium dioxide market has been segmented into rutile and anatase. The anatase grade type segment is projected to grow at the highest CAGR from 2016 to 2021. Anatase grade titanium dioxide is preferred in the manufacturing of paper, as it is less abrasive to the papermaking machinery. The market for anatase segment is also expected to witness high growth owing to the increasing demand for the anatase grade of titanium dioxide in the paints & coatings application from the construction industry. Global titanium dioxide market is mainly driven by increasing demand for lightweight vehicles in the automobile industry especially in the developed countries like US, Germany and France. Rising demand for lightweight automobiles is expected to play a vital role in growth of global titanium dioxide market. Materials such as polycarbonates are used in manufacturing of lightweight automotive which have low scratch resistance value. Also, the product is used in various industries such as chemical intermediates, fiber, technical titanium, inks for printer and rubber. Paper industry is the third largest user of titanium dioxide and contributed 10.4% in terms of revenue globally. Titanium dioxide is used in manufacturing of decorative papers, these are used in manufacturing of flooring, furniture and wallpapers. Demand for high end furniture is increasing which is expected to boost the demand for titanium dioxide. The paper industry is expected to contribute about 10.4% during the forecast period. The Chloride Process: There are two main stages: a) The conversion of rutile to titanium (IV) chloride b) The oxidation of titanium (IV) chloride (a) The conversion of rutile to titanium (IV) chloride The rutile is fed into a heated bed together with a source of carbon, usually coke. Chlorine is fed into the bed and the reaction takes place to form titanium (IV) chloride in the vapour form which is removed from the bed. Iron and other metals in the ore are chlorinated and also leave the bed in the vapour state. The oxygen in the ores is combined with the carbon to form carbon monoxide and dioxide. The vapour stream is cooled and the metal chlorides other than titanium (IV) chloride are condensed and solidified. The titanium (IV) chloride vapour, which contains almost pure titanium (IV) chloride and has a lower boiling point, is then condensed and stored as liquid. It is then reboiled and distilled to give a purer product to feed to the next stage. (b) The oxidation of titanium (IV) chloride Liquid titanium (IV) chloride is vaporized and burnt in oxygen, together with a hydrocarbon fuel source (for example, methane) to a high temperature to initiate the reaction and keep the temperature high enough for the reaction to proceed: The titanium dioxide is formed (by adding seed crystals) as a fine solid in the gas stream and is filtered out of the waste gases using cyclones or filters. Once again control of crystal growth is important to give particles of the correct size for pigments. This is done by adding nucleating agents to the gas stream (e.g. water or Aluminium chloride) and by cooling the products. The chlorine in titanium (IV) chloride is released and recycled to the chlorination stage of the process above. The product contains small amounts of absorbed chlorine gas which are removed. The product is washed and dried before milling and surface treatment in an identical manner to that used in the Sulfate Process described. Blending and Bottling of Thinners and Solvent Thinners. Production of Paint Thinners and Solvents A paint thinner is a solvent used to reduce thickness of oil-based paints or clean up after their use. They can also be used to remove tar buildup and other compounds. The thinner has the ability to reduce all coatings that use conventional high VOC thinners. Normally paint thinner is used to remove oil-based paint from brushes, rollers, equipment, and surfaces. However, there are many other applications and uses for paint thinner saving you money and time. Paint thinner is one of the most common industrial chemicals, and it’s also one of the most versatile. In addition to thinning paint products for use and for cleanup, paint thinner is excellent for other industrial cleaning applications — removing stains, grease and more from certain surfaces. Solvent, Substance, ordinarily a liquid, in which other materials dissolve to form a solution. Polar solvents (e.g., water) favour formation of ions; nonpolar ones (e.g., hydrocarbons) do not. Solvents may be predominantly acidic, predominantly basic, amphoteric (both), or aprotic (neither). Organic compounds used as solvents include aromatic compounds and other hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, ethers, ketones, amines, and nitrated and halogenated hydrocarbons. Their chief uses are as media for chemical syntheses, as industrial cleaners, in extractive processes, in pharmaceuticals, in inks, and in paints, varnishes, and lacquers. Market Outlook Solvent Moderate growth is estimated for India solvents market during the forecast period 2016 to 2024. Red Oxide Primer Manufacturing Business

Red Oxide Primer Manufacturing Business. Project Opportunities in Paint and Coating Industry. Production of Red Oxide Primer from Mill Scale Red oxide primer is a specially formulated coating used as a base coat for ferrous metals. Red-oxide primer serves a similar purpose to interior wall primers in that it prepares your metal for a topcoat, but it also gives iron and steel surfaces a layer of protection. Working with red oxide primer is not difficult, but it helps to be aware of some safety precautions and application tips. Red oxide primer is intended for use on interior and exterior ferrous metal and is not usually suitable for galvanized or nonferrous metals like aluminum, copper or brass. Red oxide primer is an anti-corrosion coating designed to stop rust formation. It can be applied directly over a rusty surface and is most ideal for exterior use. Red oxide primer can be covered with most conventional topcoats once it fully dries. Red Oxide Primer is an oil modified alkyd based primer suitably pigmented with micro fine red oxide and extenders. It is ideal for ferrous metal surfaces. It is free from heavy metals like lead, mercury and chromium. Primers create a flat-sheen surface that new paint can bond easily to. Primers are an intermediary coat between an unfinished or previously painted surface and new paint. Most primers are similar to paints in that they contain mostly fillers and pigments. They will create a coarse, flat surface for new paint to adhere to, but do not have enough binders or resins to truly fill out the difference in texture between the joint compound and the drywall paper meaning that even if you use a primer, you may still see an uneven finish in your paint. One advantage of primer is that many are able to be tinted, which is especially helpful when painting dark colors. A dark tinted primer will mean fewer coats of finish paint to achieve the deep color desired. Uses • Economical primer for general steel application • Not to be used on Galvanised Iron under very humid conditions Application • Ready for use with brush and roller • For spray application add Mineral Turpentine (Turps) • Steel must be free of oil, grease, rust or dirt • Remove rust and scaling paint with wire brush • Apply one coat Market Outlook The India paints & coatings market is estimated to register a growth rate of 7.10% during the forecast period (2018-2023). The coatings industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the world, so producers have been forced to adopt low-solvent and solvent less technologies in the past 40 years, and will continue to do so. The number of coatings producers is large. Most of the large multinationals have expanded operations in fast-growing areas like China. The most noteworthy trend has been consolidation, especially among the largest producers. After a decade of steady growth, production in Asia accounts for 50–55% of the total. Production and consumption are nearly identical in each country, as trade is limited to relatively small quantities of high-value product. Generally, coatings grow in tandem with the economy, so growth will continue to focus on the developing world. In emerging countries, coatings are growing at a much faster rate. The best prospects for growth are in China (6–7% average annual growth in the near future), India (6.6%), Iran (4–5%), Poland (4%), and Saudi Arabia (3–4%). Total global growth should be about 4% per year. On a value basis, it is likely that growth will be even higher as a result of increased production of relatively higher-valued coatings. Building & Construction is the fastest growing application of metal coatings Manufacturers use functional products such as paints, stains, lacquers, primers, and clears to come up with end products of metal coatings which are used in the building & construction industry. Metal coatings are applied on HVAC, trims, ceiling grids, blinds, purlins, railings, roof & wall panels, doors, soffits, and others. Mega construction projects in Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain are expected to drive the building & construction industry which will in turn drive the metal coatings market in the Middle East. The growth in the market is going to be driven by emergence of the middle class in India, increase in the propensity to spend and growing young population tending to stay in nuclear families. Primer is extensively used in the building & construction sector. It is used as a preparatory coat on the walls and other substrates, before applying the paint. Along with this, foreign companies have been entering these markets to take advantage of the prevailing opportunities. This has created demand for the commercial infrastructure, such as offices, production houses, buildings, warehouses, etc., leading to increase in the construction activities in these countries. The primer market is estimated to witness high growth during the forecast period, 2018-2023. Asia-Pacific is expected to witness highest growth in the demand for primers during the forecast period, owing to the booming construction sector, and increasing automotive & furniture production in the region. Infrared Reflected (IR) Paint Manufacturing Industry

Infrared Reflected (IR) Paint Manufacturing Industry. New Paint Technology: Infrared Reflective Coatings Infrared technology is different than the old fashioned way of just applying heat to paint. It used to be that painters would use a torch to strip old paint. It worked great, except that it caused a ton of house fires and vaporized the lead paint, which is a serious health hazard. There has been a revolution in the paint industry with the emergence of heat reflective paint, which improve buildings’ insulation properties in an eco-friendly way. These paints are generally available in light colours because they can reflect up to 80% of solar radiation. The heat reflective paint lessens the ‘urban heat islands’ effect, which allows cooler buildings. A cooler building means lesser use of air conditioners and lower carbon dioxide emission. This way, heat reflective paints are the best option for those who believe in caring for the environment and longevity of the building. Uses and Application A number of industrial coating manufacturers are already employing this new paint technology for their customers’ applications. In North America, IRR pigments are utilized in metal roof coatings to reflect heat from a building’s roof. Because more heat is reflected away from the structure’s surface, less energy (and money) must be expended on cooling the interior. In large buildings, the savings on cooling costs can be significant over time. IRR coatings are also used for other building applications, such as in the manufacture of windows and doors, where IRR pigments help limit deformation of door and window frames. In Europe, coatings producers also utilize IRR pigments in building facade coatings such as stucco. IR-Reflective Coatings Benefits: General Benefits • Longer potential life-cycle due to less polymer degradation and thermal expansion due to lower temperature. • Aesthetically pleasing colors. • Cooler to the touch for better ergonomics. • Improved system durability and less thermal degradation Roofing Benefits • Less heat to transfer into buildings. • Reduced heat island effect. • Lower peak energy demand. • Reductions in air pollution due to lower energy usage, power plant emissions, and a reduction in urban air temperatures. • Installation crews can work longer into the day before roof gets too hot to work on. Market Outlook The heat reflective paints & coatings market has been analyzed by utilizing the optimum combination of secondary sources and in-house methodology along with an irreplaceable blend of primary insights. Synthetic Red Iron Oxide Manufacturing Business

Synthetic Red Iron Oxide Manufacturing Business. Production of Iron Oxide Pigments. Synthetic Iron Oxide Factory Synthetic red iron oxide is the most common colorant in ceramics and has the highest amount of iron. It is available commercially as a soft and very fine powder made by grinding ore material or heat processing ferrous/ferric sulphate or ferric hydroxide. During firing all irons normally decompose and produce similar colors in glazes and clay bodies (although they have differing amounts of Fe metal per gram of powder). Red iron oxide is available in many different shades from a bright light red at a deep red maroon, these are normally designated by a scale from about 120-180 (this number designation should be on the bags from the manufacturer, darker colors are higher numbers), however in ceramics these different grades should all fire to a similar temperature since they have the same amount iron. The different raw colors are a product of the degree of grinding. Synthetic Iron Oxides have become increasingly important due to their pure hue, consistent properties, and tinting strength. Single-component forms are mainly produced with red, yellow, orange and black colours. Their composition corresponds to that of minerals hematite, goethite, lepidocrocite, and magnetite. Brown pigments usually consist of mixtures of red and/or yellow and/or black iron oxides. Uses of Synthetic Iron Oxide Pigments These pigments are used in wood and paper stains, linoleum, oilcloth, paints, mortar, plaster, bricks, rubber and for other pigment able substances. The range of applications of synthetic Iron Oxide Pigments is longer than the Natural Iron Oxide Pigments. Synthetic Iron Oxide are used in the following types of industry: • Cement industry, to Colour every kind of cement, mortar, grout, pavements, tiles, blocks, etc. • Paintings: primer, waterproof, enamels, decoration painting, coverings, etc. • Plastics: master batch, PVC, etc. • Paper industry: carton, mouthpiece for cigarettes, etc. • Glass industry, abrasives, food for animals, cosmetics, skins rubber, asphalt, etc. Market Outlook Today, there is a lot of varieties of Synthetic Iron Oxide Pigments are available in the market.
