India has a major agribusiness sector which has achieved remarkable successes over the last three and a half decades. Unprocessed foods are susceptible to spoilage by biochemical processes, microbial attack and infestation. The right post harvest practices such as good processing techniques, and proper packaging, transportation and storage (of even processed foods) can play a significant role in reducing spoilage and extending shelf life. The industry consists of segments like processed fruits and vegetables, cereal based products, dairy products, meat, poultry and fishery products, beverages and confectionery.

The global processed food market is estimated at $3.2 trillion. The Indian food market is estimated at $182 billion. Food processing industry in India is growing at 14% annum. The total food production in India is likely to double in the next ten years and there is an opportunity for large investments in food and food processing technologies especially in areas of canning, dairy and food processing, specialty processing, packaging, frozen food or refrigeration and thermo Processing. Fruits & vegetables, fisheries, milk & milk products, meat & poultry, packaged or convenience foods, alcoholic beverages & soft drinks and grains are important sub-sectors of the food processing industry. Health food and health food supplements are another rapidly rising segment of this industry which is gaining vast popularity amongst the health conscious. Coming to the snack food sector, application of modern technology has helped in enriching the quality of produce. It has tremendous growth opportunities in the country. Growing population, rapid urbanization, changing consumer preferences etc are expected to keep the demand increasing in future too. With a well-integrated supply chain and a good marketing strategy, a tremendous opportunity lies for snack food industry in India.

India's food processing industry is expected to benefit from this and grow to around $260-billion from the present USD 200-billion in the next 6-years, according to industry expert. It is estimated that potential for processed foods is estimated to reach from Rs 8,200-billion in 2009-10 to Rs13, 500-billion by 2014-15. India produces 41% of the world's mangoes, 30% of cauliflowers, 28 per cent of tea, 23% of cashews, 36 per cent of green peas and 10% of onions. The Indian diary sector is around $ 62 b and will grow to $108 b. How to Come Up With Agriculture Project Ideas?

The success of any agriculture-based project ideas begins with identifying the right business idea. If you are planning to start a profitable business in the agriculture industry, the first step will be to identify a project idea. I believe the following tips will help you come up with a practical project idea in agriculture.

1. Assess your Interests

You need to understand your interests in agriculture. You can start by making a list of various business areas in agriculture. These include dairy farming, horticulture, poultry, floriculture, agro-processing industry, etc. Next, review your interests and aspirations to identify an idea in these areas that are consistent with your interests. A business based on ideas that you have little personal interests may not survive future challenges.

2. Assess your level of Skills and Knowledge

The agriculture and agro-processing industry require continuous innovation and rebranding. You need adequate skills and knowledge in your preferred field. These skills help you to keep up with the high level of competition. If you have some skills in grafting tree seedlings or managing a hatchery or a slaughterhouse, let your business idea reflect that skill.

3. Your financial ability

Consider the required financial inputs against your financial ability. You may also explore other methods or raising capital, such as bank loans or shareholding.

4. Market potential

I do not think you want to start a farming project or a msme food processing factory as a hobby; you want to make profits. Therefore, before you working on a project report, survey the market. Is the demand for your intended product adequate to sustain your business? What is the level of competition?

Role of Agriculture and Agro Food Processing Industry

Agriculture is as old as human civilization. Today, it remains a key economic growth factor around the world. You notice that agricultural practices and the use of technology is very different between developed and developing countries. Whereas developed countries use farm machinery to lower costs and increase production, developing countries rely on human labor. Human labor is expensive and has lower efficiency. Agro food processing industries play a crucial role in modernizing farming and food processing.

We can summarize the role of agriculture and the agro-processing industry as follows:

  • Source of income to the farmers and manufacturers
  • Source of revenue to governments
  • Value addition to farm produce
  • Sources of employment
  • Reduce food wastage through processing and preservation
  • Enhance world food security

How to Set Up a Successful Food Processing Industry?

Do you want to start a food processing unit? Well, my task is to help you get started. Here are some tips that you might find helpful in starting a food production industry.

1. Get an Ideal Business Idea

There are many types of food processing project ideas. Know what you want to do and produce. Make a clear, precise description of your product, including its specifications and benefits to the buyer.

2. Carry out a Market Survey

Do some surveys and write a project feasibility report. This report helps you understand the market before you make your investment. From the report, identify how many food production companies there are in your locality. Get to know your competitors and the level of competition. Strategize on how to do marketing and branding to penetrate the processed food industry.

3. Develop a Management Structure

Clearly outline how you will manage company operations. This includes sourcing of raw farm produce, transport, storage, processing, marketing, etc.

4. Conform to legal requirements

Make sure you get all licenses relevant to food processing unit and packaging. Familiarize yourself with the requirements of the Food Safety and Drug Administration Authority and ensure full compliance.

5. Establish clear food safety procedures

You need to develop measures to ensure food that there is no contamination of food during either processing or packaging.

How Agro-Processing Technology helps in the Growth of Agriculture Industry?

When food-processing technology evolved during and after World War II, there was an increase in large-scale food manufacturing companies' lists. Trends in food distribution changed, and with it came a rise in quality of life.

The purposes of agriculture industry include:

  • Value addition for raw farm produce
  • Income generation for farmers
  • Reduce unemployment
  • Contribute to economic development

In the agro-processing industry, you will find a range of technologies. The simplest technologies include simple drying. More advanced technologies include irradiation techniques. I may categorize the role of technology in food processing companies into three areas of application:

1. Utilization of by-products

You can process residues such as hides, rice husks, and dung into useful products with appropriate technology.

2. Reduce farm loses

Without technology, tons of farm produce rot or lose value under storage. We can avoid this by:

  • Postharvest disinfection
  • Inducing dormancy
  • Extending produce shelf-life
  • Limiting the spread of food-borne infections
  • Improve food preservation

You can use irradiation, freezing, and other technologies to lengthen the shelf life of food processing products.

Project Report on Processed Food Industry

There are numerous profitable examples of most profitable food processing business ideas. You probably have your eyes set on one of them. Writing a food manufacturing business idea project report is one of the initial steps you must undertake. Some of the things you need to consider in your technical project report for a food-processing unit include:

1. Market Review

There are many business opportunities in the food production industry. Before you write that project status report, identify your target market. Find out if there are other manufacturers of the same product, you wish to introduce. Another thing you must establish is the demand for your product and current market prices. This should inform your production cost.

2. Technology

You can process the same food products in different ways. Find out the most affordable and acceptable production procedure and technology. Some consumers may also prefer foods processed in a particular manner. You should consider this in selecting your process.

3. Investment opportunities

If you develop an excellent industrial project report, you will tell whether your intended product is worth investment or not. An excellent investment opportunity should offer low inputs and high returns. Consult with food processing machinery manufacturers to establish the cost of machines and food processing equipment. Factor this on the production coast and compare with expected profits from the sale of your products.

Rice Milling Unit

Rice is one of the leading food crops of the world, and is produced in all the continents. Rice was an important food even before the dawn of written history. One centre of origin of cultivated rice is thought to have been in South East Asia. That is, in eastern India. Indo-China and Southern China, Another probably was in Africa. Rice is one of the most important food grains. It is used in almost all homes as eatables. It has good filling capacity as a food grains. Agriculture is the main occupation of the rural population in West Bengal. Among various crops, rice is the principal food crop of the State. West Bengal is the largest producer of rice in the country with an annual output of around 150 Lakh Tonnes. The rice is obtained after hulling/DE husking of paddy in a rice mill. The paddy comprises of 65% milled rice, 24%husk, 5% bran layers. Paddy in its raw form cannot be consumed by human beings. It needs to be suitably processed for obtaining rice. Rice milling is the process which helps in removal of hulls and bran from paddy grains to produce polishedrice. Rice milling is the process of removal of husk and bran layer from the paddy to produce whole white rice kernel. The rice should be free from impurities and should contain minimum number of broken grains. Food Corporation of India (FCI) is the main purchaser of rice. About 20 to 25% of total production of rice isprocured by FCI for at Minimum Support Price for Public Distribution System. The production in India (about 40 million tonnes) forms about 40 percent of total production of all food grains. There are a number of big rice plates in India apart from about 60,000 small rice mills of less than 2 tonnes per hour capacity. However, there is still a scope for setting up mini rice plant in various parts of India with a view to meet the local demand and providing employment to local people. India has about 82000 registered single huller units, 2600 double hulling unit, 5000 units of disc sheller cum polisher and 10000 units of rubber roll sheller. Theaverage capacity of these units ranges between 2 tonnes per hour to 10 tonnes perhour. In India, rice milling business has a turnover of more than Rs.25, 500croreper annum. Among other states, Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh etc. also produce large quantities of rice. Rice provides about 20 percent of the global average calorie intake. Although produced and consumed across the five major continents, the crop is concentrated overwhelmingly in Asia, which accounts for some 90 percent of global production and consumption, with China and India alone responsible for about half of the world total. Rice is mostly consumed in the country where it is produced, so trade in rice is small, both in absolute terms and as a proportion ofglobal production. Since the early 1990s, the volumes of rice exchanged internationally have risen quantity-wise, but also in relation to production, resulting in a expanding and strengthening of the International rice market. The India rice milling market is expected to value an estimated USD 392.6 million by the end of 2022 and witness a steady CAGR of 3.51% during the forecast period of 2016 - 2022. The high production of rice in this region and increasing demand for good quality rice are some key drivers for the growth of the rice milling market in India. India being one of the world’s largest producers of rice, possesses a significant rice milling market. A global and local increase in population has led to a higher production of rice in the country to meet both domestic and export demands. Few Indian major players are as under Best Foods Ltd. Frozen Layer Paratha (Fried dough food - flatbread native to the Indian subcontinent)

Paratha is a kind of unleavened flatbread, which is made of atta flour. The flavor of paratha is various. Sometimes, people mix stuffing with flour and knead them together such as gobi paratha or makka paratha. Sometimes, they prefer having a plain paratha and eating with side dishes like aloo, or stuffed paratha with keema, chana dal, etc. As for dessert, sugar paratha has never been forgotten. It is the best time to taste them while they are cooked. A paratha is a flatbread that originated in the Indian subcontinent, prevalent throughout areas of India, Layered Paratha is type of flatbread which originated in North India. This buttery, flaky, crisp multi layered flatbread is absolutely delicious served with your favourite curry or Indian dish. Layered paratha is made with basic and simple ingredients, kitchen cupboard or pantry. The paratha is an important part of a traditional breakfast from the Indian subcontinent. Traditionally, it is made using ghee but oil is also used. Some people may even bake it in the oven for health reasons. Usually, the paratha is eaten with dollops of white butter on top of it. Side dishes which go very well with paratha are curd, fried egg, omelette, mutton kheema (ground mutton cooked with vegetables and spices), nihari (a lamb dish), jeera aloo (potatoes lightly fried with cumin seeds), daal, and raita as part of a breakfast meal. It may be stuffed with potatoes, paneer, onions, qeema or chili peppers. Emerging cold-chain industry is benefiting frozen food market in India, while North is proving to be a significant revenue driver for the frozen food market due to robust growth in employment opportunities and rising migrating population. Currently, the Indian frozen food market is dominated by frozen snacks and vegetables - these segments together account for 85 per cent of the volume and 65 per cent of the sales. Though frozen food is gaining in popularity, particularly in North, it still has a limited audience due to unhealthy tag segment carries, which is an extension from the more substantial processed/packaged food. Indian frozen food market growing at 15-20% CAGR in the last four years. This growth was mainly due to more working women, young professionals living alone and greater exposure to western food patterns making consumers to go for food fried, baked or toasted straight from the freezer. The consumption of processed and frozen food has also increased because of growing income of the middle class people in recent years as frozen food provides good food with lesser cooking time. India’s food market is projected to get double in the coming few years due to rapid economic development, growing population and improved lifestyle. Busy lives are influencing consumers to shift their dietary preferences towards ready-to-eat food products. Hence, frozen foods have become an important part of the modern diet. Freezing or refrigeration allows consumers to have access to foods which were either unavailable or available only during a particular season. Also, freezing helps consumers to preserve their food products for future use. Availability of a wide range of frozen food products in different food categories is giving a boost to the frozen food market in India: The processed and frozen food market is seeing a steady growth in demand both in India and the world over, particularly in the developing Asian countries. Globally, the frozen food market is expected to reach $309.98 billion, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.15 per cent by 2021. Developing markets like ours are likely experience a higher growth. India’s frozen food market, which stood at $310 million in 2017, is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 16 per cent to reach $754 million by 2023. In addition to the growing consumer acceptance of processed and frozen food in India, the improved infrastructure and cold storage facilities have contributed immensely to the industry’s growth. Today, frozen foods are more accessible to the Indian consumer, because of the increase in number of large-format retail stores in the country. Smaller retail stores too now have better refrigeration facilities. Consumers today want to know where their food is coming from, how it is grown. There is an increase in demand for more natural and organic food. This is changing the way FMCG companies source their produce. The Indian ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat segment is largely a cluttered place across the globe as much as it’s Indian counterpart. The demand is driven by Asian customers looking for Indian recipes. There is a lot of competition in this space from brands from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, UAE as well as Pakistan. Invariably, there are also locally manufactured brands available across the US markets and other markets where Indians are large in number. The changing Indian lifestyle is creating a multitude of opportunities for market players across industries. For instance, the rise in the number of women in the workforce and the resultant time-paucity along with the increase of at-home socializing, the preference for nuclear families or that of young professionals living alone allows for the growing acceptance of Western food and the need for on-the-move freshly-cooked foods. The Indian market has witnessed the entry of many brands offering a host of products across various processed food categories. One segment, which has evolved significantly in the processed food section, is frozen convenience food. The increase in demand for frozen food products is driven by modern retail chains and stand-alone grocery stores, who are stocking more varieties of frozen products such as peas, corn and ready-to-cook and heat-and-eat packaged products. As sales increase, the category is slated to witness increased penetration and entry of more players and products. Few Indian major players are as under Tasty Bite Eatables Ltd. Spices (Turmeric, Chilli & Masala Powder)

Spices are non-leafy parts (e.g. bud, fruit, seed, bark, rhizome, bulb) of plants used as a flavoring or seasoning, although many can also be used as a herbal medicine. A closely related term, ‘herb’, is used to distinguish plant parts finding the same uses but derived from leafy or soft flowering parts. The two terms may be used for the same plants in which the fresh leaves are used as herbs, while other dried parts are used as spices, e.g. coriander, dill. There are a large number of various spices, used along with food such as pepper, chill, cardamom, cinnamon, mustard, cloves, ginger, turmeric, coriander etc. These spices give taste to the prepared food and at the same time give attractive colours and smell to the food. So the usage of some or all of these spices during cooking is now became an unavoidable one. The quantity of a particular spice added to the food during cooking is depends upon the taste of the user. For better and proper taste, the addition of these spices should be controlled. For that there is certain composition of spices for each type of dishes. For e.g if we are going to make the north Indian dish paneer butter masala. There is a particular composition of the spices and at the same time the composition of the spices added to sambar a south Indian dish is entirely different, even though the contents are same. India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices and spice products in the world and produces more than 50 spices. India is also a big exporter of Chilli, turmeric, cumin, pepper and many other spices. The country also imports various spices to meet its local requirement of taste as Indian dishes are incomplete without adding varieties of spices to them. Andhra Pradesh is the largest spice producing state in India. Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Assam, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are the other major spices producing states in India. Chilli is the major spice crop occupying about 29 percent of area under cultivation and contributing about 34 percent of total spices production in the country. Turmeric accounts for 14% of production and 6% of area, while garlic accounts for 19% of production and 5% of area. Seed spices contribute 17% of production and occupy 41% of area while pepper contributes 2% of production and occupies 9% of area of the total spices in the country. Total spices export from India stood at 226,225 tonnes valued at US$ 621.78 in April-June 2016, registering a year-on-year growth of 3 per cent. Major importers of Indian spices in FY 2015-16 were US, China, Vietnam, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, UK, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and Germany. Worldwide, food trends are changing with a marked health orientation. Since organic foods are free from chemical contaminants, the demand for these products should steadily increase in the new millennium. Organic cultivation is nothing new to India. Government of India has announced a few schemes under which 100 per cent export-oriented units can be set up any, where in India. The subject of the scheme is to promote to export of manufacture goods. Under this scheme special concession and facilities are provided to entrepreneurs desirous of setting up 100 percent export units. As a whole any entrepreneur can venture in this project without risk and earn profit. Few Indian major players are as under Indian Products Pvt. Ltd. Indian Chillies Trdg. Co. Ltd. Gokul Agro Inds. It is often used in American, Chinese, South Asian and Southeast Asian cuisine, both for general cooking, and in the case of roasted oil, for added flavor. The groundnut oil is composed of mixed glycerides, and contain a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, in particular Oleic (50-56%) and Linoleic (18-30%). Cooking oil is an important and essential item in the FMCG sector. An average Indian consumes 15 Kg of oil in a year. In addition to cooking, groundnut oil is used in the bakery and confectionery industry. Groundnut oil is used in soaps, salad oils, mayonnaise, etc. Groundnut oil is expensive compared to other oils. India is rated as the third largest producer of groundnut in the world with annual production of over 5-6 million tons. Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are the leading producers in the country and accounts for nearly 75% of the total output.
