In the process it has become particularly vulnerable to global trading condition.This is sufficient to take to produce more than 151 million tonnes of steel. The domestic steel industry was trying hard to increase its finished steel production from 48 million tonne in 2006-07 to 60 million tonne by 2010. The Indian steel industry had come to a full swing and is now in an expansion mode. There are plans to scale the steel capacity. The present production of 35 million tonne is expected to increase to 63 million tonne by 2012 and 100 million tonne by 2020.Consequently, the demand for ferro alloys, which are critical inputs for steel manufacturing, will also go up. Production of ferro alloys is projected to be 5 lakh tonne in 2004-05. The demand is expected to grow to 9.4 lakh tonne in 2012 and if exports are also included, it would be 11.4 lakh tonne. The manganese ore demand and supply gap is predicted by analysts to touch 0.6 million tonne.The shortfall is likely to be met through imports. High carbon ferro chrome is mainly used to manufacture stainless steel and balance usage is for manufacturing alloy steel. Currently India produces close to 1 million tons of ferro chrome and exports 3, 50,000 tons of ferro chrome. Most of the production is high carbon with chrome content of 60 to 65 percent.The industry is expecting an increase in the customs duty on ferro alloys to 10% (except for ferro nickel) as against 5%.

Manganese and silicon are crucial constituents in steelmaking, as deoxidants, desulphurizers and alloying elements. Silicon is the primary deoxidizer. Manganese is a milder deoxidizer than silicon but enhances the effectiveness due to the formation of stable manganese silicates and aluminates. It also serves as desulphurizer. Manganese is used as an alloying element in almost all types of steel. Of particular interest is its modifying effect on the iron-carbon system by increasing the hardenability of the steel. About 93 % of all manganese produced is in the form of manganese ferroalloys. The FeMn grades are high carbon (HC), medium carbon (MC), low-carbon (LC) and very low carbon (VLC), whereas the SiMn grades are medium carbon (MC) and low carbon (LC). The steel industry is the only consumer of these alloys. Silico manganese (SiMn), a ferroalloy with high contents of manganese and silicon, is made by heating a mixture of the oxides manganese oxide (MnO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and iron oxide (Fe2O3), with carbon in a furnace. They undergo a thermal decomposition reaction. It is used as a deoxidizer and an alloying element in steel. The standard grade silico manganese contains 14 to 16% of silicon, 65 to 68% of manganese and 2% of carbon. The low carbon grade SiMn has carbon levels from 0.05 to 0.10%. Demand for steel has been rising due to ongoing economic boom leading to rapid growth in various industries in the world's two largest populous countries in Asia-Pacific, China and India, with simultaneous increase in production leading to wide fluctuations is steel prices. In igneous rocks, which comprise 95% of the earth’s crust the average percentage concentration of manganous oxide is 0.124. This is small in compared with the alumina (15.34), FeO + Fe2O3(6.88) and titania but very much higher than the incidence of the well known metals copper (0.010), zinc ( 0.004), and lead (0.002). Secondly, the phosphorous content in the ore should also be low. A high purity ferro-manganese is produced by fused salt electrolysis method. The ore is roasted to produce MnO, followed by leaching with H2SO4 acid to form manganese sulphate. This solution is then neutralised to precipitate iron & aluminium. Other impurities are separated as sulphides. Finally the solution is used for electrolysis to produce ferro-manganese of metallurgical grade. The modern electric furnace route of ferro-manganese production gives 85 - 90% manganese recovery, MnO dust recycling is possible and a high degree of homogenisation, slag control and furnace scrabbing is practised. Further, smelting of high-grade Mn-ore with high-cabon ferro-manganese gives medium carbon ferro-manganese. A silicothermic reduction of manganese ore in an electric furnace yields low-carbon ferromanganese. Uses and Applications Low Carbon Ferro- Manganese is a Ferro alloy with high content of manganese. It gives strength to steel and is used in making of high tension steel; it is widely used in the manufacturing of tool steels, alloys steel & structural steels. Its property causes it to have a high affinity with sulphur in the steel and on combining produces Manganese Sulphide (MnS) which floats up to the metal surface. It is also used as a de-oxidizer and hence finds its usage in the manufacture of 18-8 Austenitic non magnetic stainless steel. In cast iron, manganese is used mainly to counteract the bad effects of sulfur. In steel, manganese acts as a deoxidizer and combines with sulfur, thereby improving the hot-working properties of the steel. Also improves the strength, toughness. Manganese ferroalloys, consisting of various grades of ferromanganese and silicomanganese, are used to provide a key ingredient for steelmaking. Market Survey According to industry experts, the Indian manganese alloy industry has the potential to meet the global challenges despite various constraints.
