Copper and Copper Products and Projects

Copper is a very special metal for industrial applications and has been mined for centuries. It is a ductile metal with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Pure copper is rather soft and malleable, and a freshly-exposed surface has a pinkish or peachy color. It is used as a thermal conductor, an electrical conductor, a building material, and a constituent of various metal alloys.Other copper minerals are far more economical to mine and purify into metallic copper that is used for wiring, electrical components, pennies and other coins, tubing and many other applications.Copper metal and alloys products have been used for thousands of years.

Copper owing to its properties such as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, ductility, malleability and rigidity finds wide applications in various fields. Specific applications of copper include power cables and wires, jelly filled cables, building wires, air conditioning and refrigeration tubings in telecom, power, construction, transportation, handicrafts, engineering, consumer durable, defence. The electrical industry claims a share of about 26%. The electronics and communications take another 30% share. With building construction (9%) and transportation (8%) added, the cumulative rises to about three-fourths. The other consuming sectors are engineering process and general (9%) and consumer durables (6%). Defence is also a substantial user. Another important consumer is handicrafts which are reported to consume close to 12% of copper in India. Apart from the primary copper production, scrap copper supply is placed at around 170,000 TPA. This is made up of defence cartridge brass scrap (17%); scrap from forging, fabrication, redrawing and machining (31%); old winding scrap (13%); copper cable scrap from electricity and telephone sector (12%); and cable units (9%).

The Indian copper industry comprises 3% on the world copper map. The unorganized sector players are also likely to contribute, however, about 1.5 – 2 lakh tonnes, thus; taking the total production of beyond one million tonnes towards the end of the current fiscal year. Major of LME-grade copper produced by the private sector majors is exported. HCL, however, has been dominating in the domestic market. SIIL, a part of Vedanta Resources, a London listed $3 billion, pioneered the manufacturing of continuous cast copper rods in India and established India’s largest copper smelting and refining plant for production of world class refined copper.  India’s copper demand will likely grow by at least 7% in financial year 2010-11, fed by power sector, while demand from real estate and construction remains weak, according to industry analyst. In India the users segment such as winding wire, power cables, transformers industry and continued increased export of downstream products supporting higher demand.

Sterlite Industries, Hindalco and Hindustan Copper are the top three producers of the metal in the domestic market.

Copper Powder - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue, Plant Economics

Profile Copper powder is finely granulated copper that has many metallurgic functions. The powder is cheaper than regular cast copper, so engineers can save money on supplies, and it often helps conserve materials because less copper will be needed. Copper powder also can be made to have different densities if handled by a powder metallurgist, meaning the copper can be porous and impregnated with oils or other metals, or it can be non-porous like cast copper. Powdered copper is used as an alloy, in metal-plastic combinations, and in structural applications. Production Process Two main industrial processes turn copper, or any other metal, into a powder. In the atomization method, molten copper is pushed through a thin tube and gas pushes against the stream of metal, producing turbulence and causing the molten copper to powder. With centrifugal disintegration, copper rods are placed in a rotating spindle, and an arc heats the rods. By using constant rotation, small bits of the copper will fly off, producing the powder. Hydrometallurgy is another method used to produce copper powder. The process yields a high purity powder, averaging more than 99% copper. Generally, the powder obtained has fine particle sizes with relatively low apparent densities and high green strength. Application Copper powder often is used as an alloying powder and is somewhat easier to work with than cast copper. This is because, in its powdered form, copper is easier to heat up and mix with other metals. Copper is often alloyed with iron & tin and powdered copper can work the same as cast copper in this arena. As a powder, it also can be mixed with non-metals such as plastic to create new substances that are commonly used for decoration. Around 70 percent of powdered copper is used in making self lubricating bearings, which take advantage of powdered copper’s porous nature. Copper/Copper alloy powders are used in many different industries for many different uses. Following are some examples of the powder uses: Brazing, Sintered Products, Friction Products, Soft Magnetic Products, Chemicals, Metallurgy,Filtration, Printing, Surface, Coating, Welding, Copper Fortification etc. Copper powder uses include powder metallurgy (PM), metal injection molding (MIM), friction components, thermal management, diamond cutting tools, lubricants, carbon brush, coatings, catalyst and crazing paste. Market Potential The indigenous production of copper powder is only around 7000 tonnes per annum as against an estimated demand of about 15000 tonnes per annum. This itself shows the huge demand for the product in India. Since there are only a few small scale manufacturing units scattered over the country, the market potential for the product is very large. The annual global production of metal powders for powder metallurgy now exceeds 1 million tonnes.

Copper (II) Sulfate is a chemical compound with the formula CuSO4. It occurs in nature as mineral hydrocyanite. It is gray to white and has rhombic crystal morphology. It decomposes to green basic copper (II) sulphate at 340 deg C and at 600-650 deg C it decomposes to copper oxide. It is generally prepared by controlled heating of Copper Sulphate Pent-hydrate, CuSO4.5H2O. Copper sulphate term is generally used to describe pent hydrate compound of copper sulphate which is also known as blue stone, blue vitriol etc. It is best known and the most widely used of the copper salts. Indeed it is often the starting raw material for the production of many of the other copper salts. Today the world's consumption is around 250,000 tons per annum of which it is estimated that approximately three-quarters are used in agriculture, principally as a fungicide. Uses & Application Anhydrous Copper sulphate has limited commercial use. • It is used as a desiccant for removing water from organic solvents. • It acts as a sensitive indicator of the presence of moisture in organic solvents. Copper sulphate pentahydrate is a very versatile chemical with as extensive a range of uses in industry. • It is used as an algaecide, an herbicide in irrigation and municipal water treatment systems, and as a molluscicide, a material used to repel and kill slugs and snails. • The metal industry uses large quantities of copper sulphate as an electrolyte in copper refining, for copper coating steel wire prior to wire drawing and in various copper plating processes. • The mining industry employs it as an activator in the concentration by froth flotation of lead, zinc, cobalt and gold ores. • The printing trade takes it as an electrolyte in the production of electrotype and as an etching agent for process engraving. • The paint industry uses it in anti-fouling paints and it plays a part in the coloring of glass. • Copper sulphate is a fungicide used to control bacterial and fungal diseases of fruit, vegetable, nut and field crops. It is used in combination with lime and water as a protective fungicide, referred to as Bordeaux mixture, for leaf application and seed treatment. • Copper deficiency in plants or animals can be corrected very simply either by applying 50 kg copper sulphate per hectare in the form of a fertilizer before sowing or by spraying the foliage of the young cereal plants. Market Survey The Market Survey on Copper Sulphate is of topical interest in the sense that copper is important metal used in India from ancient times. In fact, one age of human civilization is named after copper. Copper is also used in the alloy form as brass and bronze because of the added advantages. Copper was a scarce metal with respect to India but recent setting up of copper smelters has entirely changed the scenario of copper production/availability in the country. However, these copper smelters, except that of HCL, are producing copper based on the imported concentrates. This has opened a new path for the chemical manufacturing companies for producing copper based chemicals in the country. With numerous copper mines in the country, Copper compounds manufacturing has taken a good shot in last few years. Many Companies are setting their projects at different places in India. They produce environment friendly copper sulphate fertilizer, Copper Sulphate Electroplating Grade, Copper Sulphate Feed grade having 98% Copper content. Copper sulphate is widely used as fungicide in agricultural field. Therefore demand of copper sulphate directly depends upon the usage and development of agriculture in a country. In India, the total installed annual capacity of 43 technical grades of pesticides and fungicide is estimated at 148,000 tonnes of which only four grades (Mancozab 20,700 tonnes, Monocrotophos 14,000 tonnes, Malathion 11,800 tonnes and Endo-sulphan 10,100 tonnes) account for over 38% of the aggregate installed capacities. ? India is one among the most dynamic generic pesticides & fungicides manufacturing countries. And yet, India's own average consumption of it is low, below 500 gms per ha. Crop protection has assumed special importance since the food grains demand in the country is supposed to reach an estimated 343 mn tonnes by 2020. The agrochemical industry allocates an average of about 10% of its total sales turnover for research and development. This amounts to Rs 3.5-4.0 bn. The agrochemical industry is spread over around 200 large and medium sized manufacturers and 600 formulators producing about 60 technical grades of pesticides. Other important players in the sector include 10 multinational companies operating for quite some time. While the organized sector contributes 55% to the industry's output, the small scale sector makes up for the balance. The Indian industry has been focusing on integrated crop management (ICM), increasing exports of genuine pesticides & fungicide and concentrating on farmer-friendly activities. With the global market rising, there are encouraging prospects for the Indian industry. The pesticide industry is targeting a 10% share of global pesticides market and has been working on the ICM program to introduce safer applications, spray devices and crop protection through balanced use of biological and chemical pesticides. The exports cover pesticide intermediates. Pesticides and fungicide exports from India were growing at the rate of 15% and are expected to witness a more accelerated growth. Demand of copper sulphate is increasing rapidly for its use as a natural growth stimulant in animals, as well as in prevention of E.coli and listeria. The food-grade Copper Sulfate industry is a $1.2 billion industry growing at approximately 15% per year.
