Related Projects: - Chemicals (Organic, Inorganic, Industrial) Projects Sodium borohydride provides organic chemists a very convenient and mild means for reduction of aldehydes and ketones. Before this, people usually use metal/alcohol approach to reduce carbonyl compound. Sodium borohydride enables the reduction of carbonyl of aldehydes and ketones under very mild conditions to produce primary alcohols and secondary alcohols. Reduction procedure is as below: First dissolve the substrate in a solvent (typically methanol or ethanol), then cool with an ice bath. Finally add sodium borohydride powder to the mixture until the reaction is completed. The reaction process can be monitored by thin layer chromatography. If the solvent is not an alcohol, we need to additionally supply methanol or ethanol along with the reaction. Sodium borohydride is a reducing agent with medium strength, and thus exhibiting good chemical selectivity. It only reduces active aldehyde and ketone carbonyl group, and does not react with the ester, amide. Production Methods Sodium borohydride boric acid ester method: Pour boric acid and appropriate amount of methanol to distillation kettle, slowly heated at 54 °C for total reflux 2h. Then collect the azeotropic liquid of methyl borate and methanol solution. After treatment of azeotropic liquid by sulfuric acid, using fine distillation can yield relative pure product. Feed sodium hydrogen obtained with reaction between hydrogen gas and sodium into the condensation reaction tank. Heat with stirring to about 220 °C and then begin to add boric acid ester. Stop heating once the temperature reaches 260 °C; Keep the feed temperature below 280 °C, continue the stirring after the addition of boric acid ester to ensure the thorough reaction. After the completion of reaction, cool the temperature below 100 °C, centrifuge to obtain a condensation product pellet. Add an appropriate amount of water to the hydrolysis reactor and slowly transfer the filter pellet into the hydrolysis reactor, keep the temperature lower than 50 °C, heat to 80 °C after the complete of adding the filter pellet. Centrifuge and separate, transfer the hydrolysis solution to stratification vessel to keep still for 1h for automatic layering. The hydrolysis solution in the lower layer corresponds to sodium borohydride. The reaction formula is as below: H3BO3+3CH3OH?B (OCH3)3+3H2O 2Na+H2?2NaH 4NaH+B (OCH3)3?NaBH4+3CH3ONa Related Books: - Chemical Technology (Organic, Inorganic, Industrial), Fine Chemicals Market Outlook In the textile industry, Sodium Borohydride used in combination with sodium bisulfite, and it is used instead of replacement for Sodium Hydrosulfite in vat dyeing, indigo dyeing, color stripping, reductive clearing, machine cleaning and many other applications where a stable, environmentally desirable reducing agent is required. Nicotine is a widely used stimulant and potent para sympathomimetic alkaloid that is naturally produced in the nightshade family of plants. It is used for smoking cessation to relieve withdrawal symptoms. Natural organic compounds and Pyrethroids: Nicotine is a non-persistent non-systemic, contact insecticide with some ovicidal properties. Nicotine is useful as a fumigant in closed spaces. Nicotine is prepared from tobacco by steam distillation or solvent extraction. However, Nicotine is harmful to bees, dangerous to fish, livestock, game, wild birds and animals. Following formulations of nicotine are available in the market: The 95% alkaloid, nicotine sulphate [40% alkaloid], and 3-5% dusts. For fumigation nicotine shreds are burnt, or the liquid nicotine is applied to a heated metal surface. The implementation of Tobacco control measures and higher production of Tobacco is expected to ease the situation in the future and more raw material containing higher percentage of nicotine will be available in future to the Nicotine and other alternate tobacco product manufacturers in the future. However, in India, the product of nicotine alone is not enough to meet the growing demand. Most of its demand is met by imports. Nicotine is one of important alkaloid chemical having various applications. Its major use is found as insecticide for various fruits & vegetables. Nowadays the nicotine is sold in the market as nicotine sulphate 40 % concentration. In agriculture it is used in the form of nicotine sulphate solution to control different pests and fungi in crops. Being a potential pesticide obtained from natural resources, it has a very good market potential in the agricultural sectors. Active Zinc Oxide Production from Zinc Ash, Secondary Zinc Waste & EAF Dust. Zinc Waste Utilization.

Active Zinc Oxide Production from Zinc Ash, Secondary Zinc Waste & EAF Dust. Zinc Waste Utilization. Active zinc oxide, with its unique physical and chemical properties, like high chemical stability, high electrochemical coupling coefficient, broad range of radiation absorption and high photo stability, may be a multifunctional material. With the wonderful properties, Active zinc oxide plays a very important role during a very wide range of applications varying from tires to ceramics, from pharmaceuticals to agriculture, and from paints to chemicals. Active zinc oxide are often classified into three types consistent with the production technique: indirect process, direct process and wet chemical change. Active ZnO Applications: In many applications, grades with high specific surface area allow more than remarkable savings because of their high reactivity and their excellent dispersion and fluidity properties. The principal advantages of active zinc oxides are listed below: Reduced ZnO usage in rubber applications with equal performance Very high level of activity, even in very low concentrations High level of purity: very low heavy metal content Increased production capacity Improved physical properties Better resistance to compression set Better aging resistance Rubber Coating Ceramics Pharmaceutical Fertilizer Electronics Manufacturing Process: For industrial use, ZnO is produced at levels of 105 tons per year by three main processes: Indirect process: In the indirect or French process, metallic zinc is melted in a graphite crucible and vaporized at temperatures above 907 °C (typically around 1000 °C). Zinc vapor reacts with the oxygen in the air to give ZnO, accompanied by a drop in its temperature and bright luminescence. Zinc oxide particles are transported into a cooling duct and collected in a bag house. This indirect method was popularized by LeClaire (France) in 1844 and therefore is commonly known as the French process. Its product normally consists of agglomerated zinc oxide particles with an average size of 0.1 to a few micrometers. By weight, most of the world's zinc oxide is manufactured via French process. Direct process: The direct or American process starts with diverse contaminated zinc composites, such as zinc ores or smelter by-products. The zinc precursors are reduced (carbothermal reduction) by heating with a source of carbon such as anthracite to produce zinc vapor, which is then oxidized as in the indirect process. Because of the lower purity of the source material, the final product is also of lower quality in the direct process as compared to the indirect one. Wet chemical process: A small amount of industrial production involves wet chemical processes, which start with aqueous solutions of zinc salts, from which zinc carbonate or zinc hydroxide is precipitated. The solid precipitate is then calcined at temperatures around 800 °C. Market Outlook The global Active zinc oxide (ZnO) market size is projected to grow from USD 4.4 billion in 2019 to USD 5.7 billion by 2024, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4%, during the forecast period.
