Fish production in India has increased more than tenfold since its independence in 1947. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, fish output in India doubled between 1990 and 2010. India has 8118 Km of marine coastline, 3827 fishing villages, and 1914 traditional fish landing centres. India's fresh water resources consists of 195,210 Km of rivers and canals, 2.9 million hectares of minor and major reservoirs, 2.4 million hectares of ponds and lakes, and about 0.8 million hectares of flood plain wetlands and water bodies. As of 2010, the marine and freshwater resources offered a combined sustainable catch fishing potential of over 4 million metric tonnes of fish.

RESOURCES:

Fishing is another traditional and important economic activity of the State. Goa, being located on the west coast of India, has a coastline extending over 100 Km and inland waterways of another 250 Km, rich in marine wealth. Prawns, the valuable foreign exchange earner, mackerels, sardines, etc. are available in plenty in Goa coast. Fish is a protein rich food. It forms a chief component in the diet of about 90% of the population of Goa. Capture fisheries of Goa (India) constitute a highly productive sector. They remain one of the major sources of valuable food and employment and a net contributor in the foreign exchange earnings. As a result of this dramatic increase some marine fish stocks have started showing the sign of over-exploitation. Many small scale units based on fisheries resources like salt curing of mackerels, fish meat, fish oils, dehydration of fishes etc. are being set up under the State. The fishing activity has also given a big boost to canning, freezing and other fish processing units in the State. A couple of fish oil extraction as well as fish meal manufacturing units can also be set up in the State by utilising the rich fisheries resources.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

The Indian government announced NDSP as part of the economic reforms programme. The policy involved three schemes - leasing out of foreign fishing vessels to operate in the Indian EEZ, engaging foreign fishing vessels for test fishing and forming joint ventures between foreign companies and Indian companies on 49:51 equity basis in deep sea fishing, processing and marketing. Government of India started giving licenses to joint venture, lease and test fishing vessels.

Waste Management and Recycling: Project Opportunities in Goa

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

Goa produces around 300 tonnes of garbage, but with municipal bodies. The proliferation of plastic wastes in the urban and village environments of Goa, and the abysmally hopeless and inadequate arrangements of municipalities and authorities for the disposal of this plastic litter, are subjects which many environment NGOs and citizens have expressed anguish over right from the inception of the Goa Environment Federation (GEF). Goa receives around 2 million of domestic and international tourists per year. A tourist produces an average of 1kg of waste a day. If we calculate the waste therefore, generated by the tourism industry in Goa the figures are shocking and huge. This waste is leading to a loss of biodiversity which is linked to human activities and loss of landscape attractiveness affect a number of tourist destinations. Though a few civic bodies, including CCP, have initiated solid waste management programmes, the problem is also in coping with the huge outflow of non-biodegradable waste from tourism industry, shops and establishments and plastic-oriented packaging in a consumerist society. Around 2,000 composting units to treat wet waste have been set up at various levels, including individuals and housing colonies.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Production of Wood Fibers (Used in MDF).

Production of Wood Fibers (Used in MDF). Investment Opportunities in Wood and Wood Based Products. Wood fibers (also spelled wood fibers, see spelling differences) are usually cellulosic elements that are extracted from trees and used to make materials including paper. The end paper product (paper, paperboard, tissue, cardboard, etc.) dictates the species, or species blend that is best suited to provide the desirable sheet characteristics, and also dictates the required fiber processing (chemical treatment, heat treatment, mechanical "brushing" or refining, etc.). Wood fibers are made of cellulose got from the xylem vessels in plants, especially trees. Other plants providing fibers include straw, bamboo, cotton, hemp, and sugar cane. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally denser than plywood. It is made up of separated fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It is stronger and much denser than particle board. Composite forest products, or engineered wood, refer to materials made of wood that are glued together. In the United States, roughly 21 million tons (21.3 million metric tons) of composite wood are produced annually. The more popular composites materials include plywood, blockboard, fiberboard, particleboard, and laminated veneer lumber. Most of these products are based on what were previously waste wood residues or little used or non-commercial species. Very little raw material is lost in composites manufacture. Medium density fiberboard (MDF) is a generic term for a panel primarily composed of lignocellulosic fibers combined with a synthetic resin or other suitable bonding system and bonded together under heat and pressure. The panels are compressed to a density of 0.50 to 0.80 specific gravity Additives may be introduced during manufacturing to improve certain properties. Because fiberboard can be cut into a wide range of sizes and shapes, Long (bast) Fibers, Short (core) Fibers. The surface of MDF is flat, smooth, uniform, dense, and free of knots and grain patterns, making finishing operations easier and consistent. The homogenous edge of MDF allows intricate and precise machining and finishing techniques. Trim waste is also significantly reduced when using MDF compared to other substrates. Improved stability and strength are important assets of MDF, with stability contributing to holding precise tolerances in accurately cut parts. It is an excellent substitute for solid wood in many interior applications. Furniture manufacturers are also embossing the surface with three-dimensional designs, since MDF has such an even texture and consistent properties. There are three different types of MDF particle board, fiber board and laminated board. Uses Wood fibers from aspen and spruce have been used for filler and reinforcement of polystyrene. The wood fibers used were in the form of refined wood. In order to improve compatibility of wood fibers with polymeric matrices, fibers have been modified by copolymerization with styrene. The Kant hate method of grafting employing the ferrous?hydrogen peroxide catalytic system was used for fiber treatment. The following properties of composites have been measured: elastic?modulus, tensile strength, and energy absorbed at break. Related Projects: - Wood and Wood Products Benefits ? Is an excellent substrate for veneers ? Some varieties are less expensive than many natural woods ? Consistent in strength and size ? Shapes well ? Stable dimensions (less expansion and contraction than natural wood) ? Takes paint well ? Takes wood glue well ? High screw pull-out strength in the face grain of the material The Manufacturing Process:- Advanced technology and processing have improved the quality of fiberboard. These include innovations in wood preparation, resin recipes, press technology, and panel sanding techniques. Advanced press technology has shortened overall pressing cycles, while anti-static technology has also contributed to increased belt life during the sanding process. ? Wood preparation ? Curing and pressing ? Panel sanding ? Finishing Market Outlook Wood fiber is renewable and based on agricultural products, and the composite materials we come up with would biodegrade after their service life without harming the environment Greater use of wood fibers in producing composites also could be a boost to the paper industry by providing an important new use for wood pulp, since paper is a raw material. The global wood fiber market is witnessing technological advancements. Companies are constantly striving to develop new and better ways to manufacture these fiberboards. Development of new manufacturing processes of wood fiber and applications is estimated to propel the market. The textile industry is at its boom presently, and it plays a vital role in every economy. The industry also contributes sustainably in a nation’s trade. As the industry is growing at a global level, the demand for natural as well as synthetic fibers in the industry is also increasing. In addition, certain MDF products also opt for the use of additives to impart auxiliary characteristics. Medium density fiberboard provides a homogeneous density profile that allows incorporation of precise and intricate finishing leading to a high-quality end products Furthermore, MDF provides superior strength and stability to the structures due to its high density structure, which leads to a high product consumption. Growing usage of recycled wood fibers for the production of MDF is expected to emerge as one of the promising trends propelling the medium density fiberboard panel’s market growth. In addition, increase usage of low emission adhesives and resins also results in a heightened demand for the product. Thus, rise in the production of eco-friendly MDF products is expected to drive the industry in near future. Incorporation of recycled wood products in the production of MDF is projected to fuel the product usage, mainly in Europe and North America on account of growing consumer awareness regarding eco-friendly products. The medium density fiberboard panels market can be segmented on the basis of product into moisture-resistant, standard, and other MDF products such as fire-retardant MDF. Increasing demand for moisture-resistant MDF in residential and commercial sectors for kitchen furniture, bathroom doors, and other spaces exposed to moisture, is expected to drive the growth. The global medium density fiberboard can be segmented on the basis of application into furniture and construction. Vermicompost Vermicompost is the product of the decomposition process using various species of worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and other earthworms, to create a mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast. Vermicast is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by earthworms. Vermicomposting is a type of composting in which certain species of earthworms are used to enhance the process of organic waste conversion and produce a better end-product. Vermicompost, or castings, is worm manure. Worm castings are considered by many in horticulture to be one of the best soil amendments available. The nutrient content of castings is depends on the material fed to the worms--and worms commonly feed on highly nutritious materials, such as food waste and manures. Vermicompost (vermi-compost, permaculture) is the product of the decomposition process using which is used to remove organic matter, pathogens and oxygen demand from wastewater or directly from black water of flush toilets. Vermicompost is the product of the composting process using various species of worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and other earthworms, to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast, also called worm castings, worm humus or worm manure, is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by an earthworm. These castings have been shown to contain reduced levels of contaminants and a higher saturation of nutrients than do organic materials before vermicomposting. Vermicompost, or vermiculture, most often uses two species of worms. Type of Vermicompost: - Africa Night Crwlers Vermicomposting, Lumbricus Rebellus Vermicomposting, Others. Vermicompost is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by some species of earthworm. Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich, organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. The process of producing vermicompost is called vermicomposting. It is the excreta of earthworm, which is rich in humus. Earthworms eat cow dung or farm yard manure along with other farm wastes and pass it through their body and in the process convert it into vermicomposting. Organic Manure Organic fertilizers are fertilizers derived from animal matter, animal excreta (manure), human excreta, and vegetable matter (e.g. compost and crop residues). Synthetic Camphor

Camphor is a waxy, flammable, white or transparent solid with a strong aroma. It is a terpenoid with the chemical formula C10H16O. It is found in the wood of the camphor laurel (Cinnamomumcamphora), a large evergreen tree found in Asia and also of the unrelated kapur tree, a tall timber tree from the same region. This port traded in camphor extracted from laurel trees (Cinnamonum camphora) that were abundant in the region. Even now, the local tribespeople and Indonesians in general refer to aromatic naphthalene balls and moth balls as kapur Barus. Camphor can be produced from alpha-pinene, which is abundant in the oils of coniferous trees and can be distilled from turpentine produced as a side product of chemical pulping. With acetic acid as the solvent and with catalysis by a strong acid, alpha-pinene readily rearranges into camphene, which in turn undergoes Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement into the isobornylcation, which is captured by acetate to give isobornyl acetate. The global market for synthetic camphor is estimated to be valued at US$ 322.3 Mn by the end of 2018 and is expected to reach a market value of US$ 571.6 Mn by the end of 2028, expanding at a CAGR of 5.9% over the forecast period. The global market is anticipated to represent incremental opportunity worth US$ 249.3 Mn between 2018 and 2028. Synthetic camphor is used in production of insecticides such as moth repellants and mosquito repellants. With the rising awareness around the air purifying properties of synthetic camphor, the demand for synthetic camphor powder has seen an upsurge from the downstream producers of synthetic camphor tablets. Synthetic camphor is conventionally prepared from the extracts of the camphor tree. While the one produced using chemical synthesis is known as synthetic camphor. One of the most important raw material employed in the manufacturing of synthetic camphor is turpentine oil.
