What is a onion powder project report?
An onion powder project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that peels, slices and dehydrates fresh onions, then grinds the dry flakes into a fine powder. It sets out the process, machinery, raw materials, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a bank or subsidy office needs before funding.
Entrepreneurs use it to size a dehydration line and apply for a loan or subsidy; lenders use it to check whether the unit can repay.
Also known as: project report on onion powder, dehydrated onion powder project report, onion powder business plan, onion dehydration plant DPR.
What a bank checks in an onion powder project report
An onion powder unit lives or dies on what it pays for onions and how many days its dryer runs. These four values from our sample report are the ones a credit officer usually questions first.
Fresh onions are 88% of this. Banks compare the onion price in the report with mandi rates in the buying season, because a poor crop year pushes the share up fast.
Powder picks up moisture and cakes, so it needs lined, moisture-proof bags. In the sample, packing costs more than wages, a line many reports under-state.
Dehydration follows onion arrivals, not the calendar. Lenders ask where onions come from in the lean months and whether the dryer can really run this many days.
DSCR (debt service coverage ratio) is cash available for the loan divided by the instalment due. The sample averages 2.10, and the weakest year still clears 1.8.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, onion source and buyers.
Onion powder manufacturing plant cost in India
Cost is set mostly by the dryer. Tray and cabinet dryers suit a small start, while a continuous belt dryer is what makes a unit of a tonne or more per day possible. The middle tier is the unit in our sample report.

Small and export-scale ranges are indicative and exclude land unless stated. Costs vary with dryer type, fuel, location and machine make.
Onion powder manufacturing process
Onion powder is dehydrated onion taken one step further. The line is the same as for flakes up to drying; the powder unit then adds milling and sifting, and its packing must keep moisture out.
- Sorting and grading
Bulbs are graded by size, and sprouted, soft or mouldy onions are removed because they darken the powder and raise microbial counts.
- Peeling and topping
An onion peeler strips the dry outer skin, root and neck; this peel loss has to be counted in the yield.
- Washing and slicing
Peeled onions are washed in clean water and cut into thin, even slices so every piece dries at the same rate.
- Dehydration
Slices pass through a belt dryer on hot air, kept at moderate temperature so they do not brown or lose pungency, until they are brittle.
- Milling and sifting
Dry flakes are ground in a pulveriser and sifted to the buyer's mesh size; IS 4452 sets 6% as the maximum moisture for onion powder.
- Packing and storage
Cooled powder is packed in moisture-proof lined bags or pouches and stored dry, since damp air makes it cake within weeks.
Raw materials for onion powder
Fresh onion is almost the whole raw material bill. Onions are mostly water, so several tonnes of fresh bulbs go into each tonne of powder. A small change in onion price or dry matter moves cost per kg sharply.
Varieties with higher dry matter give more powder per tonne. That is why dehydration units buy chosen varieties in season, often on contract with growers, instead of whatever the mandi offers.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh onions | 88% | 133.91 |
| Consumables | 12% | 18.26 |
| Total | 100% | 152.17 |
Onion powder making machine list and cost
The belt dryer is the heart of the plant and its largest single cost. Its size, burner and fuel decide daily output and power and fuel cost, which is 5.1% of sales in the sample.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Onion peeler | Removes outer skin, root and neck | 9.53 |
| Washer and slicer | Cleans bulbs and cuts even slices | 9.53 |
| Belt dryer | Dries slices on hot air to brittle flakes | 30.18 |
| Pulveriser | Grinds dry flakes into powder | 11.91 |
| Sifter | Separates powder by mesh size | 6.36 |
| Packing machine | Fills and seals moisture-proof packs | 11.91 |
| Total plant and machinery | 79.42 | |
Costs are the sample report's estimates for a 1,700 kg per day line. Get current quotations before you finalise.
Who buys onion powder
Most onion powder is sold in bulk to food makers, not in retail packs. Seasoning blenders and snack makers use it for steady onion flavour without peeling, cutting and waste in their own plants. Instant noodles, soups, sauces and spice mixes use it all year.
Buyers set a specification for colour, mesh, moisture and microbial load, and test each lot against it. Exporters and ingredient traders buy on the same basis for overseas food companies.
- Seasoning and spice blend makers
- Snack and namkeen manufacturers
- Instant noodle, soup and sauce makers
- Ready-to-cook and frozen food units
- Hotels, restaurants and caterers
- Food ingredient exporters and traders
Where a new unit wins: once a seasoning maker has fixed a blend, it rarely changes supplier. A unit that holds the same colour and moisture lot after lot keeps that buyer for years.
Licences and approvals for an onion powder unit
Onion powder is a food product, so the FSSAI licence is the approval that matters most. The tier depends on installed capacity, as of October 2026.
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| FSSAI State Licence | For units above the registration limits (100 kg per day, ₹12 lakh turnover) and up to 2 MT per day installed capacity, which covers the sample unit |
| FSSAI Central Licence | For installed capacity above 2 MT per day, and for 100% export-oriented units |
| Product standard | IS 4452:2009 for dehydrated onion: for onion powder, moisture up to 6.0%, total ash up to 5.0% and acid-insoluble ash up to 0.5% |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board, in the category the state assigns |
| Factory and fire | Factory licence where worker and power thresholds apply, and a fire NOC for the dryer and fuel store where required |
Loans and subsidy for an onion powder unit
Onion powder is food processing, so it can use the food-specific PMFME scheme as well as the general MSME routes.
PMFME
35% subsidy, up to ₹10 lakh per unitCredit-linked capital subsidy for micro food processing units. You bring at least 10% and a bank loan covers the rest.
PMEGP
Manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakhMargin-money subsidy of 15–35% by area and category. Suits a small unit with tray or cabinet dryers.
MSME term loan with CGTMSE
Guarantee cover up to ₹10 croreCollateral-free cover for eligible micro and small units, the usual route for a belt dryer line.
Scheme limits and periods change. Confirm current terms with the bank, the District Industries Centre or the PMFME State Nodal Agency before applying.
Mistakes that weaken an onion powder project report
- Pricing onions at the season's low all year
Onion prices swing between harvest and lean months. A report that uses the cheapest month's rate shows profit the unit cannot earn.
- Guessing the yield
Powder per tonne of fresh onion depends on variety, dry matter and peel loss. Set it from trial drying runs, not a round number.
- No working capital for seasonal buying
Buying onions when they are cheap ties up cash for months. Without it in the cash credit limit, the unit runs short mid-year.
- Leaving out testing and dry storage
Buyers reject lots on moisture, colour or microbial count. A small lab and a dry store for finished powder belong in the project cost.

Onion Powder project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to set up an onion powder manufacturing plant in India?
A small unit with tray or cabinet dryers needs roughly ₹30–60 lakh, while an export-scale plant with a multi-stage belt dryer can need ₹6–12 crore. Our sample report models a 1,700 kg per day unit at ₹175 lakh, with ₹79 lakh in plant and machinery. These ranges are indicative; your report prices land, building and machines for your own location.
How is onion powder made?
Fresh onions are graded, peeled, washed and sliced thin, then dried with hot air in a belt dryer until the slices are brittle. The dry flakes are milled in a pulveriser, sifted to the mesh size the buyer wants and packed in moisture-proof bags. Drying is the step that decides colour, pungency and moisture, so most of the process control sits there.
Which machines are needed for onion powder making?
A typical line has an onion peeler, a washer and slicer, a belt dryer, a pulveriser, a sifter and a packing machine. In our sample report the belt dryer is the largest single item at ₹30.18 lakh of the ₹79.42 lakh machinery cost. Smaller units start with tray or cabinet dryers and add a belt dryer as volumes grow.
Is the onion powder business profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 1,700 kg per day unit sells ₹392 lakh in Year 3 and keeps ₹48 lakh as net profit, a 27% return on investment. Break-even is at 39% of capacity and payback is about 3.1 years. Real profit depends most on the onion price you lock in during the season, drying fuel and buyer credit.
Which licence is needed for an onion powder unit?
You need an FSSAI licence: a State Licence for most units, or a Central Licence above 2 MT per day installed capacity or for a 100% export-oriented unit. You also need Udyam and GST registration and pollution board consent. Quality is usually checked against IS 4452, the BIS specification for dehydrated onion.
Can I get PMEGP or PMFME support for an onion powder unit?
Yes, if the project fits the scheme rules. PMFME offers micro food processing units a credit-linked subsidy of 35% of eligible project cost, capped at ₹10 lakh. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh with a 15–35% subsidy. Larger units usually take an MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover. Confirm current terms before applying.
Is the onion powder project report PDF free, and can I use it for a bank loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
