| When a person's kidneys aren't working properly, haemodialysis, often known as hemodialysis or simply dialysis, is used to clear their blood. This form of dialysis achieves the extracorporeal elimination of waste products such as creatinine and urea as well as free water from the blood when the kidneys are in a state of renal failure. Hemodialysis is one of three renal replacement therapies. Apheresis is a method for separating blood components such as plasma or cells outside of the body.
