| Dicyandiamide is a strongly alkaline and water-soluble white crystalline compound with the scientific name of cyanoguanidine. The chemical is the dimer of cyanamide or cyanoguanidine, which is mainly used in the production of melamine. Dicyandiamde is also used as a curing agent for epoxy resins and laminates for circuit boards, powder coatings and adhesives. Cyanamide, the amide of normal cyanic acid, is a white crystal that melts at 45° C. It is readily soluble in water, alcohol and diethyl ether. It is prepared commercially by the carbide process from the carbonate derived from limestone or by the desulphurization of thiourea in the presence of catalyst (mercuric oxide). Dicyandiamide is an intermediate for melamine production and is the basic ingredient of amino plastics and resins. It is used in the production of a wide range of organic chemicals including slow and continuous nitrogen release fertilizers, fireproofing agents, epoxy laminates for circuit boards, powder coatings and adhesives, water treatment chemicals, dye fixing, leather and rubber chemicals, explosives and pharmaceuticals. It is extensively used as an excellent additive for plastic packages for food stuff and intermediates of pharmaceuticals. Dicyanamide, also known as dicyanamine, is an anion having the formula C2N–3. It contains two cyanide groups bound to a central nitrogen anion. The chemical is formed by decomposition of 2-cyanoguanidine. It is used extensively as a counterion of organic and inorganic salts, and also as a reactant for the synthesis of various covalent organic structures.
