Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride | |
| Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone drug class. It is a second-generation fluoroquinolone antibacterial. It kills bacteria by interfering with the enzymes that cause DNA to rewind after being copied, which stops synthesis of DNA and of protein. Ciprofloxacin is not to be used in infants as they have not developed sufficient enzymes to metabolize the drug. Severe adverse reaction will occur in this patient group. Ciprofloxacin is used to treat a number of infections including: infections of bones and joints, endocarditic, gastroenteritis, malignant otitis externa, respiratory tract infections, cellulites, urinary tract infections, prostitutes, anthrax, chancroid, among others. This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.
