Propylene, also known as propene is a colorless, flammable and gaseous hydrocarbon (C3H6) which is obtained from petroleum. Uses of propylene are quite diverse such as chemical products like glycol and propyl alcohol.

Propylene is deprived or natural or direct production by microorganisms rather it needs an artificial metabolic procedure for direct bio production. Propylene can be obtained from the steam cracking of liquid feedstocks such as naphtha and LPGs. It can also be obtained from off-gases produced in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units in refineries.
Today there are three grades of propylene
Polymer grade (99.5% pure)
Chemical grade (93-94% pure)
Refinery grade (60-70% pure)
