Formaldehyde or formic Aldehyde, HCHO, the simplest of the aliphatic aldehydes, is a colourless gas. It is met with in commerce in the form of its aqueous solution, under the name Formalin, Formaldehyde etc. The manufacture of formaldehyde in India was under taken by the Industrial Chemical works. It is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant for surgical purposes, in the manufacture of phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resins, in the plastic industry. It is used for the preparation of anatomical and biological specimens as it renders protein hard and insoluble. It is also used in the manufacture of synthetic dyestuff and in silvering mirror. The most important use of formaldehyde and its polymers is in the manufacture of phenolic and urea melamine resins. This use accounts for over 70% of formaldehyde production in U.S.A. At present, there are almost 20 units manufacturing formalin. The total demand for formalin from all these end-uses is estimated to increase around 3,35,000 tonnes.
