Surfactants or surface active agents are organic compounds that lower surface tension between two liquids or between a liquid and a solid. Functionally, they are used to improve cleaning efficiency, emulsifying, wetting or dispersing actions, solvency, foaming/de-foaming and lubricity of cleaning agents and other products.

Classification of Surfactants

  • Anionic Surfactants
  • Nonionic Surfactants
  • Cationic Surfactants

Surfactants are one of many different compounds that make up a detergent.  They are added to remove dirt from skin, clothes and household articles particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.  They are also used extensively in industry.  The term surfactant comes from the words surface active agent.

Floor cleaning market is the second largest product category of the toiletries and household cleansing market of India. The floor cleaning market has been further segmented into dish wash bars, liquid and powder in which dish wash bars commanded a predominant share. Growing awareness, easier access to range of products through organized retail formats and changing lifestyles have been the key growth drivers for the sector with even rural households starting to display preference for toilet cleaner products instead of phenyl and acids which facilitated the further expansion of the industry in India.

The surfactants market is segmented on the basis of substrate into synthetic and bio-based surfactants. Synthetic surfactants account for a major share of the surfactants market as it is extensively used in various industrial and commercial products such as cleaners, detergents, soaps, shampoos, and others. However, the demand for bio-based surfactants is growing owing to the increased inclination of consumers towards products made from natural feedstock.

Based on the market analysis, household surfactants are majorly consumed worldwide, followed by personal care, food processing, oil-field chemicals, agricultural chemicals, textiles, and others. Personal care industry is growing at an annual growth rate of 23%, agriculture chemicals at 5.6% and oil-field chemicals at 4.3%. Meanwhile, textiles market is also showing a steady growth rate.

The global surfactants industry is a growing market and is expected to be huge in the near future. Bio-surfactants hold a major portion of the growth in which the non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants are the most popular. Household detergents are the most popular in the surfactants in the industry.

Surfactants are surface active chemical substances which are mainly used to improve the properties of oil-water based formulations. They are used in various fields including agriculture, personal care and industrial cleaning. Global surfactants market demand was 15.93 million tons in 2014 and is expected to reach 24.19 million tons by 2022, growing at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2015 to 2022.

India has a large market for niche beauty products, with cosmetics companies exclusively marketing oil-free fairness face washes and creams. Surfactant-based face washes, hair creams and gels are increasingly replacing traditional products because of ease in using the product, its cleansing ability, and ease in customizing the product.

Trends and Opportunities in Surfactants for Personal Care, finds that the Indian surfactants market earned revenues of US $2,278 million in 2013 and estimates this to grow at 13 percent annually to reach $3,748 million in 2017, approximately. Meanwhile, the personal care surfactants market is estimated to grow at 23 percent from 2013 till 2017 and attain $547 million in revenue.
