STEEL AND STEEL PRODUCTS

Wednesday, December 3, 2014

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon that is widely used in construction and other applications because of its high tensile strength and low cost. The carbon in typical steel alloys may contribute up to 2.1% of its weight. Steel is an alloy that consists mostly of iron and has carbon content between 0.2% and 2.1% by weight, depending on the grade. Varying the amount of alloying elements, their formation in the steel either as solute elements, or as precipitated phases, retards the movement of those dislocations that make iron so ductile and weak, or thus controls qualities such as the hardness, ductility, and tensile strength of the resulting steel. Different types of steel are produced according to the properties required for their application, and various grading systems are used to distinguish steels based on these properties.

Types of steels are- carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and tool steel.

Carbon steels contain trace amounts of alloying elements and account for 90% of total steel production. Alloy steels contain alloying elements (e.g. manganese, silicon, nickel, titanium, copper, chromium and aluminum) in varying proportions in order to manipulate the steel's properties, such as its hardenability, corrosion resistance, strength, formability, weld ability or ductility. Stainless steels generally contain between 10-20% chromium as the main alloying element and are valued for high corrosion resistance. Tool steels contain tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt and vanadium in varying quantities to increase heat resistance and durability, making them ideal for cutting and drilling equipment. Some examples of steel products are- fasteners, seamless tube, casting, rolling of flat products etc.

A fastener is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together. Fasteners can also be used to close a container such as a bag, a box, or an envelope; or they may involve keeping together the sides of an opening of flexible material, attaching a lid to a container, etc. Stainless steel tubing is often used in applications that depend on the material’s high corrosion resistance, versatility, and relatively low maintenance cost.

Global industry association has projected India's steel demand to grow at 3.4 per cent during the current year. Demand outlook, has pegged demand growth for the next year even higher at six per cent, a significant rise as compared to 1.8 per cent in 2013. In its April outlook, WSA had projected 3.3 per cent growth in steel demand for India in 2014. Continuing with subdued consumption trend for the last couple of years, India's steel consumption grew by just 0.3 per cent to 31.17 million tonnes (MT) during the April-August period of 2014-15.
